It likely comes down to how quickly the vaccine is administrated in Japan. At the very least, if they are going to allow foreign spectators they may force them to be vaccinated before entering the country. We'll know one way or another by the end of March/beginning of April.

Problem is athletes are young so in most countries people in their age group won't be done by August - some places (China for example) might allow jumping the queue but most won't. Japan would have to provide the vaccine itself to the athletes and officials to not make it a nationality lottery.

From one of the CBC’s leading Olympics journalists:

So sad.

I feel for those who had to miss 2016 and were aiming for 2020. I also feel bad for the baseball and karate athletes who will not live their Olympic dream...

If Japan cancels these games they will have plenty of backlash and don't stand a chance to host another Games for the next 50 years at least IMO. There will be a LOT of furious people over this.

50km Race Walk wouldn’t get a proper goodbye. Mixed Trap also will have never been an Olympic event.

I would still caution against taking this reporting as final at the moment.

    • I think they incorrectly translated Ukrainian word "nahorody" - it is not a full synonym of "medal". Its cocrrect translation is "award". Meanwhile russian tennis playes switched for Potapova ->  Rakhimova ->
    • Ukrainian diver Lyskun switches allegiance to Russia, loses all medals | Olympics News | Al Jazeera   'loses all medals'   I would assume Al Jazeera could have been a bit clearer and mention this would presumably only be national medals. I mean, it's not like the Ukrainian federation, or any single federation for that matter, has the power to strip her of her world and European championships medals I hope (not for her sake, but because that would be a super weird precedent)
    • That's what I'd plan as well (except for MelFest), but I also know I am hypocritical enough to still want to watch the show and have a fun evening
    • Confirmation about the broadcasting rights.   If I'm reading it right, for most of Europe it will now be exclusive to Discovery/Eurosport or whatever brand they use.     For outside Europe, it's on YouTube.
