also Ajan has a bad reputation covering up some doppers including Kazakhstan players. 

I am expecting harsh decision against the country, but feeling sad for poor clean athletes.

In a significant number of sports, the national authorities essentially run the sport, and the athletes, in their country, even in democratic states, but especially in authoritarian ones. In such circumstances, national bans seem the only way to deal with egregious and repeated rule-breaking. In this case, it is brutally clear that the Kazakh authorities simply see the ethical rules of the sport as an annoyance to be got around. I don't see any alternative in such a situation to expulsion. The rights of the many outweigh the desires of the few.

 

Participation in specific competitions is not a human right. and it should not be set out as though it were one the way Bach does. Nor is it racial discrimination to expel a national federation, of whatever ethnicity, where there is clear evidence of systemic problems and unacceptable actions, particularly where those problems appear to have a state-backed basis.

 

That may seem rough on the 'clean' - or as is more often the case, just not yet caught, as shown particularly vividly by the post Sochi Russian crises - athletes of corrupted national federations, but the level of pretend naivite used to justify ignoring systemic doping is killing sport - and that's whether it's central Asians in weightlifting, Western and Southern Europeans and North Americans in cycling, West African's in weightlifting, East Africans in athletics or Russians in just about everything.

Let's have some breaking news from the 2012 London Olympics... 

 

The Russian and World Anti-Doping Agencies (Rusada and WADA) have won an appeal at the Court of Arbitration for Sport against an original decision by RUSADA's Anti-Doping Commitee concerning 2012 Super-Heavyweight Olympic medalist and multiple World and European champion Tatyana Kashirina.

 

Kashirina has now been banned for 8 years based on data from the infamous Moscow lab (LIMS) database and could lose years of results from the time the offence took place. Since most of the problems in LIMS come from 2011 to 2013 they has the potential to strip Kashirina of a great lot of medals.

IWF launches Refugee Team programme for 2024

 

After a very positive first experience in 2023, the IWF is happy to announce the renovation of its IWF Refugee Team programme for the year of 2024.

 

The applications for potential candidates to be part of the project were sent today, while the deadline to receive the proposals is January 31, 2024.

 

On February 28, the IWF decides on the final constitution of the IWF Refugee Team for 2024.

 

The new programme stipulates that a minimum of four athletes (two male, two female) will be part of the team – any IOC Refugee Scholarship holder will be automatically added to this number.

 

As in 2023, a coach/manager will also be appointed to supervise the team’s activities, while next year’s novelties include the nomination of a physiotherapist.

 

In terms of eligibility, athletes must be officially recognised as refugees in their country, in accordance with the UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, and may be entered in IWF events.

 

Asylum seekers are not accepted in the programme.

 

Moreover, lifters are required to have a travel document and must comply with article 5.5.16 of the IWF Anti-Doping Rules, by which whereabouts information of the athletes shall be submitted at minimum three months prior to the event.

 

Finally, all athletes and support personnel must complete the WADA ADEL online course before competing and present their certificate to the IWF/ITA.

 

In accordance with article 17.2.2 of the IWF Anti-Doping Rules, the IWF may also decide to request that athletes complete education activities before and/or during their participation in selected events as a condition of such participation.

 

The 2024 IWF Refugee Team programme will be effective until the conclusion of the IWF World Championships, next December in  Manama.

 

While these athletes are not part of the Olympic Qualification system, they will be able to attend IWF competitions throughout the year and will be invited to take part in at least one training camp during the upcoming months.

IWF and SPORTFIVE renovate partnership for 2024-2028

 

The IWF and SPORTFIVE have renovated their partnership for the Olympic cycle 2024-2028, thus re-appointing the German-based company as the exclusive media rights agency on a global basis.

 

Under this agreement, SPORTFIVE will be responsible for handling the media international rights (outside the Host Country) for the IWF World Championships, IWF World Cups, and IWF World Junior Championships during this period.

 

Following the recent IWF Executive Board meeting in  Doha, where the IWF Grand Prix II is taking place until December 14, 4 major competitions are already part of this package: in 2024, the IWF World Championships in  Manama, in 2025, the IWF World Championships in  Forde and the IWF World Junior Championships in  Tashkent, and in 2026 the IWF World Championships in  Ningbo.

 

SPORTFIVE has been firstly appointed by the IWF as exclusive media rights partner for the period 2022-2024.
