Australian Adam Scott has withdrawn from the olympics too.

Really bad news for Olympic golf.... He and Jason Day would made a very strong "team" for Australia..

it's a shame have an Olympic Sport where its best athletes don't want to take part on it

South Africa's Louis Oosthuizen (Ranked 12) has also withdrawn. A couple more big names and we could hit point where people feeling neutral to the idea will drop out to rest.

Im afraid that same will be with tennis in 2020 because there is no points for ranking.

I don't think points are a huge deal. The culture is also a bit different in tennis. Everyone playing tennis now grew up watching their idols playing at the Olympics, it essentially has become part of their schedule. Golf doesn't have that and it will take these pioneers to set things on the right track. Of course losing more top 15 players will not be helpful for the sport.

:RSA Charl Schwartzel (ranked 20th) has withdrawn. He was Louis Oosthuizen's replacement. The spot has now been pushed down to Jaco Van Zyl.

Exactly my thoughts! I think it's really bad for the olympic future of golf, but I totally undersand the players, they dream is to win the majors, the ryders cup, those were the dreams that they grew with, not winning an olympic medal...

I don't think it's too woriisome yet. If tennis is anything to go by, the first tournament in Seoul was missing a lot of top tennis players (Wilander, Lendl, Becker, Noah, etc.)

It takes some time to establish it.

None the less several of the absolute top players have embraced it and some even mention it as the target of the season.

I'm not too worried...

    • It's all hogwash especially in the short attention span generation. Like nobody cares about Free Tibet anymore either. Free Palestine will last a lot longer due to Saudi Arabia becoming a sponsorship force in sports.   Israel is too weak in soccer to qualify from UEFA zone. The only time they qualified was from the Asian zone and they only beat Australia & New Zealand who were complete nobodies in the 1960s. No such luck in the 60 years since.
    • Oh I assure you FIFA dodger a bullet with Israel not qualifying…   But ya that’s kind of the thing, shut up and dribble is a mantra anti LGBT people have used often. I don’t think it’s hypocritical to remind them of their position
    • Ah, yes but that's not how pro athletes are taught in North America these days? Shut up & dribble is xenophobic, racist or whatever? The hypocrisy of some of these policies were exposed during 2022 World Cup already where the Saudis played it smart and waved their own "Free Palestine' slogans. Forget LGBT rights for a moment, how many 'Free Palestine' flags will be waved in 2026? Or will those be confiscated by default? Somehow I feel this won't be met with similar backlash when China clamped down on 'Free Tibet' in 2008 OG. Saudi Arabia is more important to global markets than Iran & Egypt
    • Wisła Płock just assumed 1st position after five consecutive draws. Must be first time ever a team on a five match winless streak actually moves up to league top.
