[OFF TOPIC] Eurovision Song Contest 2023

That seems unfair...why not do the same with the televotes to make it fair with both set of votes being treated the same way?

Because that's precisely the point. Televote should have a bigger impact on who wins than the jury. Eurovision should always make the will of the people a priority over a selected jury. We see how much big TV events are losing viewers like the Grammys and the Oscars because people aren't interested in watching shows where a selected few decide who wins the top prize. It is very important for EBU to make sure that the public feels like they are in control. Because if they feel like the contest is rigged in favor of certain countries and certain type of songs, they will soon lose their audience.

Of all countries they were the only country to not give Sweden any televoting points. Coincidence? I really don’t think so.

Well if you see Eurovision as one big cheating show, then yeah, cheating Finland :p (you know, with all the diaspora voting, X voting for Y every year, etc)

Actually that’s why I want the voting as it is now. 50% jury and 50% televoting.

She was second in the televoting without even a single televoting point from cheating Finland

you know the televoting can be tactical and unfair too?

last year everyone complained about Ukraine winning the televoting. The point is there are complaining about the winner almost ever year. Grow up

Every voting is unfair in some way, but Eurovision is a popularity contest. It was never about finding the best, most polished song or the best singer. Ukraine won fairly because the European public wanted to give it to Ukraine, regardless of why people voted. I mean, it sucks if they vote for political reasons, but it is what it is. And now they very clearly wanted to give it Finland, based on the average points per country Cha Cha Cha is the second most successful song ever in the history of the Eurovision televote, this was a landslide. Regardless of how we arrived to this result, it's the will of the people in a TV show that's kept around because of its viewership numbers. Eurovision's target audience are the people watching at home, not the European music industry. If they lose the trust of that audience by giving the win to a song that the public clearly liked less by a wide margin, they are risking the entire future of the contest.

The new all time Top5 in the televote in the current 50-50 voting system. Cha Cha Cha and Grande Amore lost because the juries gave those wins to Sweden.

Or the juries actually know quality?

So according you Stefania is the best song ever? Better than Euphoria?

Still Finland is the only country to not give any televoting points to Sweden? But televoting is flawless?

Peaking to see the big activity here and what a surprise, that we have yet again a "scandalous outcome" by the looks of it. :d Best thing i did was to stop acknowledging Eurovision's existence last year, just too much unnecessary anger. Also, Rest of the World votes, hahaha :roflmao:

Funny thing is there is really no reason for any serious outcry at all, it's really mostly just creating a problem out of thin air :d

At least last year it was understandable that there were doubts about the whole thing, since Ukraine obviously won 100% because of the war.

This isn't the Grammy Awards, it's not about quality. It's about entertainment. But people do vote for quality songs and performances when someone truly breaks through. That's how Portugal got that huge win in 2017. That's how Italy won in 2021 despite representing a genre that rarely wins the televote.

Televoting isn't flawless but it's what ensures the popularity of the contest. If they didn't switch to televote at the start of the modern era, Eurovision would be dead by now. People tune in to be entertained and see how the continent votes. Not a selected jury, but the people of Europe.

If you think Stefania won the televoting because it’s popular then you are very naive.

The point is that people complained last year too even if the the winner of televoting won the contest

    • Basically, NOCs can attempt to qualify in additional events without gaining athlete quotas. For example, let's say a nation already qualified in the 4- and 4x, they can use the athletes they plan to send in those events and try to qualify in the 8+. That's where the extra coxswains will be used. If a nation intends to attempt to double-up they must let World Rowing know before the final qualifier regatta.   There's a good chance the quotas may not be used and will have to be reallocated. Looking at 2024, only  would have been eligible for the men while the women there's . With that said there's no guarantee they would have wanted to double-up their athletes.   In reality we are more likely to see the reverse, nations who qualified in the 4x, 4-, or 8+ doubling-up athletes for the 1x, 2x, 2-.
    • Hey everyone, how are you all?   Reading the qualification document here and the "3 quotas for additional coxswain" is very confusing to me. Can someone (try to) explain to me please how those quotas will be assigned?    Thank you so much

    • In a country as big as , the odds of Olympians being close to you are quite small; however, once I realized several months ago that even a state as small as mine hosts Olympians on occasion, I decided to scour each sport's calendar to make sure I caught them when they come around.  That led me to the middle of nowhere in my own state today, where there was a 4* Eventing competition, featuring a couple of Olympians and/or World Champion athletes.   Most all the athletes here were local or from USA, but there were a couple who compete for   or .  When we walked up, I had no idea what I was doing.  I thought I was in the right arena at the venue, but I didn't really see anyone there.  (There weren't any stands full of spectators, nor did I see any judges...it was time for dressage.). One of the ladies turned around and we struck up conversation.  Turns out I was in the right spot, and they were just on a short break.  She directed my attention to the upcoming athlete, Caroline Pamukcu.  Thanks to my research ahead of time, I knew she was on the Paris 2024 Eventing Team.  The lady we were talking with was the owner of the horse Caroline was riding.  After she finished with her dressage round, she got off the horse and was just standing there talking with her crew.  We went over and had a brief chat and one of the other ladies offered to take our picture.     I asked Caroline if she was aiming for LA28, and she said yes.  I've also since shown the girls and wifey the video from her Paris 2024 jumping competition.  Hope she makes the team this year!   (Caroline has a Gold Individual Eventing and Silver Team Eventing medal from the 2023 PanAms.  Boyd Martin from the Paris team was also there, himself having a WCh Silver and three gold PanAms.  Tamra Smith, who has a Silver from the 2022 WCh, was there as well.  Waylon Roberts, who represents  and has a PanAm Silver competed.  I saw a few more Dressage rounds, then watched them all do the Jumping.  Didn't get to see Cross-Country, but they'll have another similar event in October.)
