There is no quota in pt obviously, and I remember when the first black players started to appear in the national team, I think in early 2000s, many people got racist about it, as in “what is this team? Angola or Cape Verde?”

which I always found ironic because before Ronaldo our most iconic football player is someone black that was not even from Portugal (Eusebio, from Mozambique, which was Portuguese at that time but let’s be real, it was a colony), and people loved (and love) him like a god (he’s buried in our “heroes temple” in Lisbon together with kings and navigators).

I think this is also because although we have a big black community, they’re concentrated in suburbs of Lisbon alone mostly (in my home town actually) so the rest of the country still finds it difficult to see it as normal.

but I have to recognize that nowadays is much better, there are still those racism dudes , but less than before, I think.

eusebio has also been described  as "the european Pele"

As Portuguese who is aware of the reason why there are so many black people in Brasil , I’m gonna slowly get out of the conversation

and in Equador, Colombia and Venezuela as well. In Guyana and Suriname also they reach about 30% of population (black people of Netherlands come from Suriname)

Oh ok, I missed this news then.

I found multiple slovak and czech (probably just some copy/paste article from foreign agency) articles claiming it was because of complains of players, including the Kane missed penalty

by googling in english I found this indian newsite...so I guess it is all just a hoax then :d

And the Antilles :p

To relate this to sports: Antilles you mostly see in athletics or baseball, while Suriname you see significantly more in things like kickboxing, where the world was dominated for years by Suriname-Dutch athletes like Tyrone Spong, Ernesto Hoost, Remy Bonjasky etc.

In football...there isn't really anything specific, as far as it's important (which it of course isn't).

And more related to the World Cup: what's the referee situation? I know Orsato will do Argentina - Croatia, and Makkelie is still in the pool of referees that's left (but no specific assignment yet), but who else are left?

Oh and Lahoz is sent home, unsurprisingly.

Oh and Lahoz is sent home, unsurprisingly.

Lahoz was never getting another game after QF even if he didn't completely suck.

Here is the second list of retained refs:

 AFC: al-Jassim (QAT), Muhammad (UAE)
-CAF: Ghorbal (ALG)
-CONCACAF: Ramos (MEX), Elfath (USA)
-CONMEBOL: Claus (BRA), Sampaio (BRA), Valenzuela (VEN)
-UEFA: Taylor (ENG), Orsato (ITA) Makkelie (NED), Marciniak (POL)

Makkelie or Marciniak will get the FRA vs MOR semi-final and Cesar Ramos probably gets the final IMO.

The AFC refs will work the 3rd place playoff (one as 4O).

    • It's all hogwash especially in the short attention span generation. Like nobody cares about Free Tibet anymore either. Free Palestine will last a lot longer due to Saudi Arabia becoming a sponsorship force in sports.   Israel is too weak in soccer to qualify from UEFA zone. The only time they qualified was from the Asian zone and they only beat Australia & New Zealand who were complete nobodies in the 1960s. No such luck in the 60 years since.
    • Oh I assure you FIFA dodger a bullet with Israel not qualifying…   But ya that’s kind of the thing, shut up and dribble is a mantra anti LGBT people have used often. I don’t think it’s hypocritical to remind them of their position
    • Ah, yes but that's not how pro athletes are taught in North America these days? Shut up & dribble is xenophobic, racist or whatever? The hypocrisy of some of these policies were exposed during 2022 World Cup already where the Saudis played it smart and waved their own "Free Palestine' slogans. Forget LGBT rights for a moment, how many 'Free Palestine' flags will be waved in 2026? Or will those be confiscated by default? Somehow I feel this won't be met with similar backlash when China clamped down on 'Free Tibet' in 2008 OG. Saudi Arabia is more important to global markets than Iran & Egypt
    • Wisła Płock just assumed 1st position after five consecutive draws. Must be first time ever a team on a five match winless streak actually moves up to league top.
    • Well ya, which is why the Egyptian and Iranian teams can shut up and dribble :P
    • The problem is, the World Cup is not a local event. Overall it's another storm in a teacup. LGBT rights in Muslim countries won't change a damn inch becuse of one soccer match in Seattle
    • After looking at the entry list of athletes in the official website, I've changed some of my predictions in the Olympic events with these changes:   Total Tally: Thailand 87, Singapore 51, Vietnam 48, Indonesia 33, Philippines 24, Malaysia 22, Cambodia 1     Badminton (5): Malaysia 2, Thailand 1, Singapore 1, Indonesia 1   Men’s Singles: Switched from Thailand to Singapore     Boxing (11): Thailand 8, Philippines 2, Vietnam 1   Men: -54 kg (-55 kg): Thailand, -60 kg: Thailand, -63.5 kg (-65 kg): Thailand, -69 kg (-70 kg): Thailand, -80 kg: Philippines   Women: -50 kg (-51 kg): Thailand, -54 kg: Thailand, -57 kg: Thailand, -60 kg: Vietnam, -66 kg (-65 kg): Thailand, -70 kg: Philippines     Sailing (7): Thailand 4, Singapore 2, Malaysia 1   ICLA 6: Switched from Thailand to Malaysia     Taekwondo (8): Thailand 6, Vietnam 2   -67 kg: Switched from  Vietnam to Thailand     Weightlifting (5): Thailand 2, Philippines 1, Indonesia 1, Malaysia 1   Men: -65 kg: Malaysia, -94 kg (-95 kg): Thailand   Women: -53 kg: Thailand, -69 kg: Philippines, -77 kg: Indonesia   * I saw that they have actually change the weight categories to almost match that of IWF newly introduced categories from several months ago.      Wrestling (12): Vietnam 7, Philippines 3, Indonesia 2   Men's Freestyle: -57 kg: Philippines, -65 kg: Vietnam, -74 kg: Vietnam, -86 kg: Philippines Men's Greco-Roman: -67 kg: Indonesia, -77 kg: Vietnam, -87 kg: Indonesia, -97 kg: Vietnam Women's Freestyle: -50 kg: Vietnam, -53 kg: Vietnam, -57 kg: Vietnam, -62 kg: Philippines
