orangeman 1,422 Posted August 2, 2021 #1761 Share Posted August 2, 2021 As sad as the women's result is, at least they didnt have the only roster full of NBA players and still fail to qualify. I keep hearing its the Golden Age of Canadian basketball, but I havent seen either team produce anything.
JoshMartini007 2,313 Posted August 2, 2021 #1762 Share Posted August 2, 2021 Basketball gets overhyped in Canada, but with that said, we should have been good enough to reach the quarter-finals.

Sure, but Canada is ranked #4 in the world. Given that, they were battling with France (#5) and Australia (#2) for a quaterfinal spot. And the mens team has the most NBA players outside the US and couldn't even get there. But whatever, it is what it is. I just found it funny that it took a 23-9 Q3 for Australia to do it. I watched the second half of that game and have no idea how PR was ever even in it. Like rugby, it has to come down to the wire to break Canada's heart for no real reason. Not too surprising considering the results of the last worlds. Hoping they can pull out a top 4 time tomorrow so they can race for bronze.

Ironically, the men still have a chance for bronze if I'm not mistaken.
orangeman 1,422 Posted August 2, 2021 #1766 Share Posted August 2, 2021 In good news, Anicka Newell easily qualified for the final in pole vault. She could challenge for a medal if she performs at her best.

I looked more into this - the men's and the women's race have the same rules - "The remaining six teams will be ranked by their times in the First Round and will be paired as follows: The two fastest teams ride the final for the bronze medal. The next two fastest teams ride the final for 5th and 6th places. The last two teams ride the final for 7th and 8th places." Which means both the mens and womens team could win bronze - it will be a tough ask but its possible so I'm going with that. intoronto, Canada4thewin and Topicmaster1010
JoshMartini007 2,313 Posted August 2, 2021 #1768 Share Posted August 2, 2021 Overall no medals for Canada on Day 10, the first time since Day 1, but the 1-0 victory against the United States in women's football still made the day a success. Day 11 will likely be another quiet day with our best chance being in athletics (women's hammer throw). There's a chance in artistic gymnastics (women's balance beam) and maybe track cycling (men's and women's team pursuit) if they can recover from a bad qualification round. I was going off the commentary today when I was watching. The announcer said the top four compete for medals while the other compete for placings. When Aus fell to 5th she said they won't be able to get a medal. So I was going on that. Thanks for the clarification.
james89 510 Posted August 2, 2021 #1770 Share Posted August 2, 2021 I opted to catch up on sleep than watch the full soccer game which may have been a mistake but I am so happy. Luckily the final is at a perfectly decent time! That's a great result for Matt Hughes!
