Didn't expect a medal on the first day. Rowing went well, but the loss of our men's volleyball team stung a bit, even though Italy is better ranking wise we were up 2-0 and lost 3-2

Hoping for a couple of medals tomorrow.

Id score day 1 as a disappointment.

Volleyball team flopping, our second beach volleyball team losing a close match, Michael Woods missing out on a medal etc.

I wouldn't say disappointment.  Yeah, Woods was a medal contender but there's only three medals and half a dozen contenders.  5th ain't bad.

Yes, the second beach volleyball team actually looked kind of bad in the last set tonight, but the actual medal favourites looked dominant in their match.

Volleyball was a heartbreaker.  Taking a 2-0 lead, and actually leading in the 3rd set.  Then they completely fell apart.  They needed that win to position themselves well for the quarters.

But, a huge win in softball over Australia pretty much guarantees Canada will play for a medal, very likely gold/silver (and even if it is bronze, they look much better than the three possible adversaries).

Soccer wasn't impressive, but they got the job done.  They'll move on.

Rowing was generally successful.  W8 looked very good, almost going directly to the final.  I'd say they're in the hunt for a medal now.

Swimming transpired pretty much as expected, which is good.  Exception being Pickrem opting out of the 400 IM which she probably wasn't going to medal in anyway (though who knows with so few entries).

Tomorrow Swimming relay and diving offer hope for medals.  Some Rowing semis.  If Canada wins in softball it'll guarantee a medal.

Swimming has me worried. Every individual swim was slower than trials

Looking forward to two very likely medals today (fingers crossed), and a huge showdown between Japan and Canada for a shot at the gold in softball. Also excited to see the debut of skateboarding (potential outside shot at a medal?) and surfing.

As an aside, watching the CBC's daytime show right now and find Perdita Felicien to be very obnoxious. Talking about herself at every opportunity she gets.

Hopefully she realizes. It's her first time hosting such a big show like this

    • @hckošice Do you agree with me to some extent, or am I hopelessly dreaming?
    • Interesting forecasts, I like 'em! I think the US wins the most medals, but Norway tops the standings (most golds)... have Germany neck-and-neck with Norway for medals, but fewer gold.    Then have Canada and Italy fighting it out for 4th in 5th   Then have Sweden, Austrian, Japan, Netherlands and France rounding out the top ten, with them all within a medal or two of each other. Of course reality with differ significantly
    • A huge day for the very young Italian Bertini: despite a very tough draw, he beats Szilagy in the round of 16 and Gu in the quarterfinals! First career podium for him!
    • Time for more personal and detailed predictions:    will have it hard this time.   I'm trying to stay realistic about our chances. We're not going there as favorites in most events, and deep down I know it would be a big surprise if we suddenly overperformed or even dominated. Still, sports have a beautiful way of ignoring expectations.   We're never predicted to do amazingly well at either edition of the Olympics, so I’m desperately hoping for moments that will stay with everyone in the country for years, whether it's a final that keeps people glued to their screens or a performance that will make us proud. Just one medal could mean so much. It would bring real emotions and something to cheer for to a country that isn’t going through its best period right now. And on the rare occasion of a hockey miracle, celebrations in the streets wouldn't be an oddity.   It all comes down to four sports, the rest are out of reach:   Alpine Skiing is a big mystery, and it will all come down to Petra, whether she'll compete and eventually shock everyone with a heroic result. That's the best-case scenario. Biathlon can be the dark horse, you never know how things turn around. The women's relay is probably our biggest chance, but all four of them need to deliver great performances. As for Ice Hockey, our national sport, I'll always believe in another fairytale. I'll always believe we'll pull off a miracle. Since I wasn't alive yet when we won gold at the World Championships, I can only resort to watching old videos and imagine how amazing it must have been to watch as your country is the champion of the world in something. Best on the planet. Even the silver years later was amazing, but I was too young to actually remember it, so it's time for another hockey euphoria in the country. Ski Mountaineering is a bit overlooked in the media right now, but I believe we have a huge chance of winning a medal in one of the events. Our athletes aren't minnows.   We're a small country, still relatively young. There's not much we're known for in the world, but sports are a perfect way to build a national identity, to stop people from thinking you're still part of a state that ceased to exist decades ago. Doing well in sports is one of the few things these lesser-known countries can show off, not just the ones in Europe.   I'm desperately hoping for a medal, and we all want those two weeks of the Olympics to be amazing and full of unforgettable moments.
    • Never wanted a prediction to be more right
    • Two weeks before the Games officially begin, time to give my final predictions on the medal standings.     will beat  and win the medal table at the WOG for the first time in 100 years. All the (absurd) retirements of elite Norge athletes last season will have its consequences and they will drop to second.    will my bold pick to return to the top 3 after their horrendous Beijing performance, when it comes to Gold medals.     Germany will slip down and will have less than 9 golds for the first time in 50 years. Depending on how the chips fall in some sports, they could even be outside the top 5.   Home team of  will have their best Olympics in some, better than Torino, but it still won't be enough to get into the top 5.
