Monzanator 4,457 Posted December 7, 2022 #181 Share Posted December 7, 2022 It's funny because in Poland for years biathletes wanted to become "sport soldiers" and Wereonika Nowakowska was the one that was always denied because she'd had to skip one summer training camp for a three-month army prep course. And the coaches (mainly Kolodziejczyk, who else) never allowed her to do that. Obviously it's not a full-time military service, least of all in countries that aren't at war with anyone. Usually some office paperwork or promo appearances. God knows biathletes have enough shooting training to get bored of it in the army

The guys who retired from sport this summer, retired because the club (well basically the ministry of defence) did not extained their contracts because of poor results... It is in fact Not exactly an obligation, but basically it is unofficially expected that if you want to be a top level athlete representing the country, you should sign with Dukla and thus enter "unofficially-officially" the Slovak Army. Slovakia is kinda an exception in the world sport. Almost 75 % of Slovak top athletes are members of the Slovak Army (under the military Club Dukla Banská Bystrica) and we are speaking about likes of Petra Vlhová, canoe slalom team etc.. or even the Russian-born wrestlers who are winning for us medals nowadays Hide contents And speaking about biathlon eventual mercenaries, Even Nastya Kuzmina was and (still is) part of Dukla here is the full list (when you will click on biathlon icon you will find the complete list of athletes, and you can see that it is the complete NT) https://www.dukla.sk/ well, not so much... I mean, in most Countries many athletes of the socalled "minor sports" have to enter the military groups to have a salary and time to train professionally... also in Italy 99% of the top athletes in almost every individual sport (except for tennis, golf, motorsports) are enrolled into the military corpse (we have many: the main police -aka Fiamme Oro- the jail police -aka Fiamme Azzurre- the Financial Guard -aka Fiamme Gialle- the regular Army, the socalled "Carabinieri" -which is a selected corpse within the Army- the Aviation and the Marine Corpse)... and once their sport career is over, if they want, they can continue another career in the actual job they are going to be prepared for. maestro and hckošice

Let's see how it turns out. I recon she can get points if she has a decent shoot. Say seven out of ten. Well, I think points with a 7/10 is maybe a bit far-fetched. She impressed in IBU Cup, skiing-wise, that's for sure, but the field was not as strong as usual. It was more or less a very strong Junior Cup. Without the Russians and with most of the Norwegian B-team in WC, only the Germans were fielding their "journeywomen", who are not the fastest out there. My call is she will be within 30-50s of the best ski time today. Considering her pedestrian shooting speed (44s in Idre) it's like she's starting with only 9 bullets, so "6/10" would be short of the top 40. Same in France. In winter sports (meaning on snow here, kinda) most of the elite athletes are enrolled in the Gendarmerie, the land Army or the Customs.
