So does Canada have to beat Japan tomorrow since the Netherlands beat Serbia today . Or can they just beat the Netherlands Friday to secure their place ?

They don't need to, but it would be very helpful, especially if we only win 3-2 against the Netherlands.

 

The Netherlands match is still the most critical. There isn't really a path to qualification if we lose.

No matter what we have to beat the Netherlands. If we win two sets against Japan, win or lose, we’d put ourselves in a great position to qualify with any win over Netherlands. Otherwise, we’ll need to beat them 3-1.

Completely unrelated to the game, but I will say this. How are all of the posts I’m seeing on Instagram calling this match a must win to keep our Olympic hopes alive? Like we could lose in 3, and would still qualify with a win in 4 over the Netherlands. Anyways I’m pleased, best game from the in a while.

Many are probably just parroting other posts without doing the math. As for the original posts, maybe they forgot that the Netherlands also loses points in addition to Canada gaining points or they probably saw Canada being down ~18 points and think the gap is too large.

 

Or maybe they just wanted to create suspense (more clicks/interactions).

Totallympics Qualification Tracker currently has us at 284 athletes (it says 287 but the diving total should be 8 instead of 5).

 

Athletics - I would expect another 6 at the very least

Beach Volleyball - 1 or 2 more pairs for 2-4 more athletes

Golf - +4 athletes

Judo - Only ranking quotas have been entered so another continental quota here and a team quota would be +2

Skateboarding - Hopefully 4 quotas here

Tennis - Roughly 4 or 5 athletes

 

Maybe a couple of reallocations too.

 

So that would take us into the 300-310 athlete range.
