Artistic Gymnastics 2019 Discussion Thread

Both Asian and South American championships took place this weekend.

First, about the Asian Championships: the level was a little lower than I expected. I don't understand why Oksana Chusovitina, Yeo Seo-jeong and Yang Hak-seong took part at the Korea Cup four days ago and skipped the Asian Championships. Some of the Chinese gymnasts did well, especially on men's and women's vault, and I was pleasantly surprised with Ahmad Abu-Al-Soud from Jordan winning vault pommel horse with a great score (14.9) that would probably place him among the finalists at the World Championships. It was also nice to see some guys throwing big difficulty (such as Aprizal on vault and Karimi on floor), and Keikha from Iran was solid. All the rest, though, was pretty average.

Now, the South American Championships. On the women's side, Argentina had a very interesting team on paper, but when it comes to the real competition, they couldn't quite live up to their potential. Don't get me wrong: they earned four gold medals, including a team medal, and this is great, but they are capable of scoring a lot more. The results might have been enough for gold medals on this level, but they need to acquire more consistency. Dominici and Magistrati have a lot of potential, but both had many, many, many falls. The only really good event was vault (with a surprising bronze medal for Bolivia, totally deserved). On the men's side, Brazil dominated most of the events, but there's a lot of room for improvement until the Pan Ams. Very nice results for Peru and Uruguay, and I'm glad Fuenmayor from Venezuela is still alive and kicking. Colombia also had some great moments (Lugo on rings, Calvo on parallel bars and Sandoval on high bar) with lots of difficulty but the execution was not quite as good, so they had to walk away without a gold medal, unfortunately.

Edit: The guy from Jordan won pommel horse, not vault.

Here are some statistics about the European Games in all gymnastics disciplines (not just artistic gymnastics).

At the 2015 European Games, 20 nations earned at least one medal in gymnastics. At the 2019 edition, 8 more nations earned medals for the first time (Armenia, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Finland, Lithuania, Poland and Sweden). In total, 28 nations earned at least one medal in gymnastics out of 50 participating countries. This means 56% of the nations which have took part at the European Games achieved at least one medal result in gymnastics. This is a much bigger number compared to other continental Games, especially considering that there have been only 2 editions of the European Games.

Event First held Number of editions with events in gymnastics Participating nations (including defunct teams) Nations which earned at least one medal in one of the gymnastics disciplines Percentage of medalists in gymnastics
European Games 2015 2 50 28 56%
Asian Games 1951 (gymnastics events since 1974) 12 50 13 26%
Pan American Games 1951 17 42 13 31%

  • 1 month later...

Celine van Gerner has announced her immediate retirement. After some injuries she was on the way back, but she started doubting about there being more in life and decided she wants to focus on her studies and the 'normal' part of life from now on.

What was it? The link doesn't open anymore.

She has two new skills yet to be validated: a double somersault with three twists on floor, and a double somersault with two twists off the balance beam.

Well both technically. Both were absolutely amazing to see from her. She’s so nice and humble too. Can’t wait to see what she cooks up next.

She's going for 6 golds in Tokyo, it's hard to root for USA Gymnastics due to the Nassar scandal, but i sure hope she (and Mikulak who so deserves it) have huge games in tokyo

On top of that they have a terrible schedule in the CL. In their case qualifying for the play-offs would be a success in this season but I'm not sure how many points they will need to do that. Actually they chave 8 points.
