Men's Football UEFA European Championship 2020

Recommended Posts

I expected something else from Turkey, especially after those great matches they did in WC 2022 preliminary. But we should not forget that biggest achievements for Turkey started with a defeat: EURO 2008 (losing first match, 0-2 against Portugal), where they were semifinalists losing to Germany 3-2 (Lahm scored for 3-2 in 90th minute) and FIFA WC 2002 (losing first match, 1-2 against Brazil) where they finished on 3rd place. Sure, these could be only coincidences, but let's see if they are capable to repet these results, because the next opponents are very beatable.

Congrats to Italy for the very good quality of football they showed last night. Let's see if they can keep the same level against better teams in next stages.

Yesterday's match was something I would expect from a :FRA v :HUN, not from an :ITA v :TUR. It could have easily been even worse for Turkey, like a 5-0, the difference was that big. The issue for Turkey now is that their goal difference can hurt them if they will be third in the group.

I don't think your team will play that worse in this group. I saw Germany playing in Bucharest in March, they are weak, Portugal can be surprised as well (actually in last Euro you draw 3-3 with them). Of course, if we look on French team they seems to be the favourite to trophy (at least on paper), but you never know. Good luck.

I will be happy if we won't pull an :IRL at EURO2012 and we will have at least one close call where we will have a good shot at a draw. I think we have a stronger team than in 2016 even without our two best players, but the draw is obviously MUCH harder.

    • Some notable  retirements:   Elisavet Pesiridou (athletics - 100m hurdles) - She announced her retirement on her 34th birthday. She competed in Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020. She narrowly missed Paris 2024 despite being in good form, the rest of he field seemed to get stronger and her ranking was a bit lower even though she was quite consistent. She struggled with injuries in 2025.   Fani Tzeli (taekwondo) - She was 7th in Tokyo 2020 but didn't qualify for Paris 2024. Still, she is only 24 yo and seemed to be rising up again after winning bronze at the European Championships so it is a bit surprising.   Aikaterini Divari (sailing) - She competed in Tokyo 2020 but didn't qualify for Paris 2024. Only 25 yo.   AJ Ginnis (alpine skiing) - Despite winning a silver at the World Championships he never got to compete at the Winter Olympics as he was always unfortunately injured. A shame as he is by far our best winter athlete ever. Only 31 yo, and I have a feeling he might come back in 2030 based on his last interview...

    • Well.  Having gotten it a bit at a distance a few comments about my experiences   Travel: Very happy. Flying to and from was a breeze (the plane home slighty delayed). The same can be said about getting around in Milano. Getting around outside was of course slightly harder, especially with some delays back from Antholx (but i guess that's not a big surprise when a lot of people leave a place in the mountains)   Atmosphere: Very happy around the venues, but it's also very clear that it's smaller than the Summer games. People weren't following the events wherever you went. Alcohol certainly made a difference between Paris and now. Sadly did experience a few who should certainly have stopped a couple of beers earlier.    The logistics at the venues:  Very easy to see that Santagiulia is new and absolutely not a perfect venue. Seems like some kinks were fixed when I got there, but there's still stuff to work out. The food at the Milano venues were meh and there were quite some lines. Tesero was a chaos when it came to getting food, but the quality was slightly better at the skiing venues.
