Round-up of news stories

  • Austrian Julien Eberhard has officially retired.  The 35 year old only raced twice last season due to an injury sustained in Ostersund.
  • Swiss Martin Jaeger has retired.    I wonder if his placement on the B-Team impacted this decision?  He was one of the biathletes that I enjoyed following.  One that could, on the right day, make things interesting.  The Swiss men's team next year will be much younger.  No Weger, no Jaeger, not Tamborino (still unsure about this one though).
  • French Junior biathlete Laura Boucaud has retired at age 21.  She won the 2000 World Junior Relay title, and was the Silver medalist in the European Championship Sprint.  She did not race since the Winter of 2020-2021 due to various health issues, mental and physical.  She gave an interview that is very interesting to read.
  • Johannes Dale will marry former biathlete Kristina Skjevdal.

No surprise Paulína Fialková is the Biathlete of the Year in :SVK

In other news, it looks she decided to continue for at least the next season.

Which does not look very good for her younger sister Ivona, who announced a, by her own words : "longer break" to reconsider if she will continue or end her career. What is sure we are not going to see Ivona next season and there sadly a big chance that also never anymore on the biathlon circuit as athlete. She is already established in the diplomatic sector, freshly elected as our NOC athletes commission member

Two interesting items:

1.  Sverre Olsbu Roeisland will be the new women's coach of Germany!  He is the husband of Marte.  That should make for some interesting discussions.

2. German Nordic Skier Antonia Fraebel will start biathlon this year.

Yesterday Elvira Öberg finished third in a national 7.5km freestyle skiing race before Maja Dahlqvist among other xc skiiers.

today It was a super sprint in biathlon. In the semi final, Frida Karlsson won over Hanna Öberg (both 8/10). In the final Frida lost but still impressing:d

Marte Olsbu Roeiseland will meet with the Norwegian team today to let them know if she will retire or not.

Ukrainian Team Announced

Women - Yuliia Dzhima, Olena Bilosiuk, Darya Blashko, Iryna Petrenko, Anastasiya Merkushyna and Yuliia Zhuravok.  Notable absences are the Semerenko sisters.

Men - Dmytro Pidrychnyi, Anton Dudchenko, Bogdan Tsymbal, Artem Pryma and Taras Lesiuk.  Denys Nasyko and Artem Tyshchenko will fight for the last spot.

The German team has announced they will actually participate in the Summer Biathlon World Champs, an event that they normally skip.  They will attend in part because they are hosting :)

Tarjei Boe and has partner Gita Simonsen have announced that she is expecting.  Due date is in the fall.

Poland will not attend the Blink or Summer World Champs.  New coach, Tobias Torgersen has announced multiple camps in Poland and abroad, including a month at Lillehammer.  “For now, I want us to focus exclusively on training. We will still participate in the Polish championships, but, for international departures, we will see that in a year, ”

Wait what, Frida Karlsson is apparently able to hit 80% in the shooting? :yikes:

Yep and I don’t know how much she has ever practiced shooting. Never tried a biathlon competition anyway even at junior level. Would not want her to leave XC but by this result it looks like she is more of à talent in both skiing and shooting than Stina Nilsson:d

Also surprising even if it was à super sprint exhibition event, Skottheim won the final ahead of Elvira Öberg even when both shot 10/10.

    • Unfortunate, but it doesn't change the fact that I'm looking forward to Thursday evening, when the team captain's meeting is over and we have our very first World Cup start list of the season. Always a cool moment to see who's there and everything
    • Today I unpacked some of the boxes in which we have put my way too many books to move to our house, and I came across these beauty's I hadn't seen for a while     Absolutely recommended, tough to get for a decent price, but they are such an interesting read with lots of very interesting little stories! Still looking for at least 1900, 1904 and 1906, but not really in the right moment to spend money on that now, so the wait goes on
    • Which I guess is part of why unfortunately 'our' first wild card attempt of the season was rejected last week
