Looks like no :RUS and :BLR Athletes at World Cups in Norway this weekend:

I'd have preferred to see these events cancelled altogether then, this is just nonsense.

I think “war of conquest” is a pretty decent line. In Crimea there was conquest but certainly no war (it was more a bloodless coup than anything else). If Putin had just done a “peacekeeping” escapade in the Donbas I think most of the world would have waved their fingers but not have reacted too strongly.

But invading a country that quite clearly does not want to be invaded for the clear goal of annexing it (Putin sort of discredited any plausible deniability with his speech)? Wherever the line is, surely that is beyond it?

This is also about sanctions. If Russian businesses are sanctioned, then on what grounds should the athletes get away with it? Professional sports are a business anyway, not some humanitarian mission.

It's foolish to think that the US would ever get this kind of treatment if they start a war anywhere. I wouldn't even blame racism why there wouldn't be boycotts in the case of another war in the Middle East similar to Iraq. People are only up in arms about this war because they see Ukraine as a democratic country that wants to join the West. If Russia would have invaded Belarus the international reaction wouldn't be anywhere near as dramatic. Sure, people were protesting against wars initiated by the US, but in the end it's our ideology (democracy, freedom) against a country or countries with an opposing ideology. If the US invades Iran the next day in the name of protecting freedom and democracy and whatever bullshit casus belli they fabricate this time, Europe would join them, and nobody would even talk about sanctions.

It comes down to the universality of sanctions. Putin did something that made most of the world unite instantly. Whataboutism does nothing here except deflect from the war that is happening right now.

It's not whataboutism to point out that one part of the world clearly has more control over sports than the other. "Most of the world" didn't unite. It's the West that's united. The Arab countries are similarly united against Israel, but that didn't result in the total exclusion of Israel from sports.

Most of the world happens to be larger and more influential than most of the Arabs.

For what it's worth, Israel did get excluded from the Asian sports continent and the Mediterranean Games, even though they are literally surrounded by Asian and Mediterranean nations. If that's not Arab doing then I don't know what could be.

West and its allies at most is around 1.5+ billion people. China and India alone which stated their neutrality here is 3+ billion. While the most of the world is united in stopping the war asap, not the same can be said about this strange moves in the sporting world being spearheaded by the west.

It's not "most of the world". It's US + Europe + Japan + South Korea + Canada, it's countries inside the American sphere of influence. That's our part of the world, but not most of the world, not in terms of number of nations, not in terms of population, far from it.

Actually they chave 8 points.
