Unfortunately the Team GB men seem to be really struggling to make much headway in Abu Dhabi with Moorhead and Powell failing to make it through their first match whilst Ham and Fryer losing in the second round.

Difficult to see how you can qualify for Paris if all you're picking up is participation points. The guys are going to need to pull out some big performances in 2023.

well, today it looks better for GBR...

Renshall is in the semifinals of the W -63kg and both Petersen-Pollard and Yeats-Brown are in the pool finals of the W -70kg...they can't be worse than 5th (Renshall) or 7th (the other 2 girls)...

Absolutely - the British women are undoubtedly performing much better than the men and I think we have realistic prospects to qualify in 5 of the 7 women's weight divisions. On the men's side however, we barely sent any male athletes to the World Champs and where they do compete, they are struggling to make any impact. Unless something dramatically changes, there is a real prospect GB will not qualify any male judokas for Paris.

not that today's starting field was really strong, tbh...;)

by the way, today it was a truly European day in Abu Dhabi, as :GRE:SUI:FRA:GBR won the 4 titles up for grabs.

which means that now :FRA France are leading the medal table with 2 Gold medals, followed by a bunch of Nations with 1 each (:ITA Italy are still second, as they won also another silver and another bronze today).

Tomorrow the event comes to a close with the heaviest classes tournaments, as usual the perfect conclusion of a grand slam.

here's the results recap updated after today's action:

:SVK Marius Fizel (+100kg class) is going to fight in the bronze medal bout at the Abu Dhabi Grand Slam :yikes: @hckošice

he beat :KSA and :ALG in the preliminary rounds, then he lost to :NED in the quarterfinals and finally he beat :UKR Khammo (not the last man of the ranking, actually, he's the world no.12 and he's won 3 world bronze medals, 1 gold and 1 bronze at the Europeans and 1 gold and 2 silvers in the grand slam tournaments) in the repechage round.

his opponent in the BMM later today is :TJK Temur Rakhimov, not an easy match, tbh (the session starts @ 3 p.m. CET, there are 12/13 matches and 2 medal ceremonies before his fight...in SVK I think you can watch everything for free on the IJF website).

I always loved this kid, because of his name.

Fizel in slovak means "cop", well, not exactly the word cop, but rather a vulgar word for describing a policeman, something like snooper but worse :p

anyway, good luck to him, would be something exceptional to win a medal in this sport for us even at this stage.
