In order to receive a "wild card" in athletics, is a nation obligated to have participated in the previous World Championships?

If you'd like to help our fellow Totallympics member Bruna Moura get to the 2026 Winter Olympics, after her car crash on the way to the 2022 Olympics, every tiny bit of help would be greatly appreciated! Full story and how to help can be found here!

No, but there are restrictions. NOCs can't enter in the combined, 3000m steeplechase or 10000m events. Also athletes wanting to participate in field or road events must prove to the technical board that they have the ability to perform in those events.

Thanks, I thought there was the restriction of participation in the world champs, but I must have been confused then :)

That's for swimming. Though I think FINA made some exceptions in 2012, most notable Qatar's female swimmer.

Today starts the national championships in Mexico, last chance for our athletes to achieve the standards set by the federation, and in the case of 20km race walk both genders, the chance to achieve nomination.

Currenlty we have qualified 20 athletes (13 men and 7 women); however, Juan Luis Barrios, two-time Olympic finalist in 5000m is likely to miss Rio due to injury and Diego del Real is not oficially selected, as the national committee asks for a 78.00 meters mark in hammer throw, even when this kid has already broke the national record twice this year, last time with a throw of more than 77.50

Does Mexico have any leeway with their standards?

Probably, but it will depend on how much pressure the National Olympic Committee puts on the federation to include someone outside the criteria.

Sadly not on this time, however I'm confident they will update results as soon as they can on the federation's page.

Some athletes from countries in Central American and the Caribbean are also competing, trying to obtain the criteria

The 1st adult competitions at the new stadium in Lutsk.
