Before London 2012, the UK had a pretty good team; for example, in 2011 they finished higher than Italy at Eurobasket.

Yeah, there was money for all sorts of sports leading up to 2012, so we were able to keep amateur players as professionals.

Now the system is that there is some funding for basketball as a community development sport, but that it in the ten thousands, not the millions that medal potential sports get.

But volleyball not looking good even before 2012. Just like handball or waterpolo- in that last sport UK was a powerhouse at the beginning of the 20th century: 4 gold for a row from 1900 to 1920, but of course it was a completely different sport then than it is now.

So, if Spain can`t beat Greece on the evening, Spain will go out after group phase:yikes:It will be the worst results of Spain in Eurobasket than 1957!!! (missed of qualify then). In 1959 they was 15 (now, if they will eliminate today, they will be outside od best 16). In all XXI century the worst resukts od Spain was 4th place in 2005. Last one, that Spain was outside the top 4, that was in 1997! History is happening before our eyes, or will Spain be able to defeat the strong Greece today and advance to next stage?

Uff, we will not play against France in 1/8:) Only possible options for now are: Slovenia or Israel: It depends of Spain- Greece match results.

Spain loses to Greece 90-86 and are knocked out of Eurobasket 2025 at the group stage. That loss to Georgia on the first day didn’t help.

In my opinion, Greece is playing so bad. With a monster like Giannis, they can only minimal beat Spain or Italy, and without him, they lost to Bosnia. For me, he's probably the most dominant player in European history. Neither Nowitzki, Gasol, Doncic, nor anyone else had such physical force. Without him, Greece would probably have lost to both Spain and Italy. This is what I wrote: if we had even one player like him since the early 21st century... Spain is much weaker than some time ago to be, but this is their worst EuroBasket result in almost 70 years... A disaster. They lost two crucial games to Georgia and Italy, teams at their level. They fought today, but missed too many free throws in the last seconds of game.

It's a very difficult bracket for Italy: the Round of 16: Slovenia and then possibly Germany in 1/4. The top eight is probably the maximum for us and even then, it will be very difficult to get there. I'm counting on Niang's development, because without one or two stars who make a real difference, like in Greece or Germany, it's very difficult to achieve success. Slovenia also has only one Doncic but he could eliminate us in one single excellent performace, if he has his day. But fortunately, he doesn't have the physical force of the unstoppable Greek leader. Today, five Spaniards surrounded him, and he gave ball to outside and Greece score the three points.

10-15 years ago, it would have been possible to beat Germany, but today? They're world champions and are playing brilliantly here, unlike Greece. But first, we need to beat Slovenia with Doncic... In this situation, reaching the top eight again will be a success, but to continue developing, you need more good players, one true leader and a solid/profesional coach, not Pozzecco, who gets at least one technical foul every game.

Btw., even on 2021 OG in Tokio we beat Germany on group phase, but they a huge progress and we are in a similar place as then.

For being the pre-tournament odds on favourites, Serbia haven't been very convincing so far in their matches. Unlike Germany who have bulldozed their opponents.

    • Apparently now Uhlaender is appealing to the IOC to add another spot and give it to her    Good grief, it's a US selection issue ultimately, they qualified two, how they award them is up to them... but she doesn't like their answer, and knows she has no legal standing to go thru those channels or CAS, so goes right to the IOC looking for special treatment.

    • Interesting forecasts, I like 'em! I think the US wins the most medals, but Norway tops the standings (most golds)... have Germany neck-and-neck with Norway for medals, but fewer gold.    Then have Canada and Italy fighting it out for 4th in 5th   Then have Sweden, Austrian, Japan, Netherlands and France rounding out the top ten, with them all within a medal or two of each other. Of course reality will differ significantly
    • A huge day for the very young Italian Bertini: despite a very tough draw, he beats Szilagy in the round of 16 and Gu in the quarterfinals! First career podium for him!
    • Time for more personal and detailed predictions:    will have it hard this time.   I'm trying to stay realistic about our chances. We're not going there as favorites in most events, and deep down I know it would be a big surprise if we suddenly overperformed or even dominated. Still, sports have a beautiful way of ignoring expectations.   We're never predicted to do amazingly well at either edition of the Olympics, so I’m desperately hoping for moments that will stay with everyone in the country for years, whether it's a final that keeps people glued to their screens or a performance that will make us proud. Just one medal could mean so much. It would bring real emotions and something to cheer for to a country that isn’t going through its best period right now. And on the rare occasion of a hockey miracle, celebrations in the streets wouldn't be an oddity.   It all comes down to four sports, the rest are out of reach:   Alpine Skiing is a big mystery, and it will all come down to Petra, whether she'll compete and eventually shock everyone with a heroic result. That's the best-case scenario. Biathlon can be the dark horse, you never know how things turn around. The women's relay is probably our biggest chance, but all four of them need to deliver great performances. As for Ice Hockey, our national sport, I'll always believe in another fairytale. I'll always believe we'll pull off a miracle. Since I wasn't alive yet when we won gold at the World Championships, I can only resort to watching old videos and imagine how amazing it must have been to watch as your country is the champion of the world in something. Best on the planet. Even the silver years later was amazing, but I was too young to actually remember it, so it's time for another hockey euphoria in the country. Ski Mountaineering is a bit overlooked in the media right now, but I believe we have a huge chance of winning a medal in one of the events. Our athletes aren't minnows.   We're a small country, still relatively young. There's not much we're known for in the world, but sports are a perfect way to build a national identity, to stop people from thinking you're still part of a state that ceased to exist decades ago. Doing well in sports is one of the few things these lesser-known countries can show off, not just the ones in Europe.   I'm desperately hoping for a medal, and we all want those two weeks of the Olympics to be amazing and full of unforgettable moments.
    • Never wanted a prediction to be more right
    • Two weeks before the Games officially begin, time to give my final predictions on the medal standings.     will beat  and win the medal table at the WOG for the first time in 100 years. All the (absurd) retirements of elite Norge athletes last season will have its consequences and they will drop to second.    will my bold pick to return to the top 3 after their horrendous Beijing performance, when it comes to Gold medals.     Germany will slip down and will have less than 9 golds for the first time in 50 years. Depending on how the chips fall in some sports, they could even be outside the top 5.   Home team of  will have their best Olympics in some, better than Torino, but it still won't be enough to get into the top 5.
