Doping Cases and Bans Thread (2016 & 2017)

Recommended Posts

So in these past days we've had:

- Ethiopian marathon runner
- Swedish/Ethiopian middle distance runner
- Two Ukrainian biathletes
- Russian cyclist
- Russian short track speed skater
- Russian long track speed skater
- Russian volleyball player
- Russian tennis player
- Russian figure skater

That's a pretty diverse list of sports...

The Sharapova case is interesting - she says she has been taking this medication for 10 years and only as of 1st Jan 2016 has it been illegal, according to Sharapova she was unaware it had been added to the list. If she was to be banned, this would be a big scalp for Russia - even the most famous of their sport stars are doped - this could dispel the arguments that many innocent Russians will be unfairly impacted if they were banned from Rio, as even the most famous Russian sports people aren't clean.

I hope that the IAAF are watching this carefully and now decide to officially ban Russia from the Olympics in a few months time - they are not cleaning up their act and doping is spreading into many other sports in Russia. Send a strong message now or it will be the end of clean sport in Russia.

    • Also it being illegal in France means the IOC will have to test everyone pre arriving at 2030 and can’t wait till they arrive at the Games to do so. I’m sure at 2028 for some sports testing will happen on site if it’s not a rule of its governing body for non Olympic events. So far only a few sports like Athletics and Boxing have that rule - I suspect others will adopt it but others might take time.
    • https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/olympics/articles/cpwj78lxypro ‘In France - one of a number of countries where genetic testing is illegal without a medical prescription due to privacy laws - the government has condemned the decision as "a step backwards". "It defines the female sex without taking into account the biological specificities of intersex individuals, whose sexual characteristics present natural variations, leading to a reductive and potentially stigmatising approach," claimed French Sports Minister Marina Ferrari.”   ‘A group of legal experts in human rights and sports have since expressed, external"urgent concern" about what they called "the regressive move toward genetic testing as a precondition of participation in women's sport" which they say "violate domestic and international laws that protect human rights and regulate the use of genetic testing and genetic information".  The group has called on athletes "to challenge the national or regional implementation of mandatory genetic sex testing, demanded by the IOC or international federations, before domestic courts, by invoking national or regional laws protecting human rights, prohibiting anti-discrimination, and regulating the use of genetic testing and genetic data".’   Domestic laws are more challenging for the IOC to deal with than CAS. Things could get complicated for a bit.
    • Except NOC’s and governing bodies have to still follow local laws. Particularly for Under 18’s there could certainly be domestic legal issues regarding associations paying for travel to other counties to circumvent a domestic ban. Child protection services don’t always act reasonable to attempts to break a domestic law.
