I really doubt netball has a chance for 2032 but what's the odds about surf livesaving getting a slot in 2032?

Expand

Netball Fast5 is a strong sport internationally and has a good chance for inclusion at Brisbane 2032.

As far as Surf Lifesaving goes, it should be noted that Coastal Rowing has already been added as a sporting discipline at the LA2028 Olympic Games.

While not exactly the same as our iconic big Aussie surf boats, there are still similarities in that teams row a boat from the shore around a coastal course.

See this photo from the World Coastal Rowing Championships. The LA2028 Olympics will also have beach sprints as part pf the Coastal Rowing disciplines.

This is what Surf Life Saving is up against.

So not sure if Life Saving Australia has, or is planning to, put a detailed submission to the IOC’s Olympic Programme Commission putting a case forward as to why Surf Lifesaving is an international sport and should be included at the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games?

On your point about Lacrosse, yes it is very much an international sport played around the world.  Recognition of this is that Lacrosse will officially be a medal sport at the LA2028 Olympic Games.

World Lacrosse has 92 member international Lacrosse sporting federations governed by across 4 continental sporting federations across the globe:

  • Asia-Pacific Lacrosse Union
  • European Lacrosse Federation
  • Pan-American Lacrosse Federation
  • African Association of Lacrosse

They drew a map on their website, must be legit ! (There is a grand total of one active club in my fully recognised Lacrosse country).

My point being with Lacrosse in for 2028 (and to some extent with Breaking in 2024), there are no rules anymore for additional sports, no threshold to reach. So why not RL or whatever really ? IOC and/or the host can chose whatever they want for whatever reasons (that they don't care to explain to anyone anyway, that's it if there is a reason to begin with).

Netball has basically no chance on gender equality grounds.

Men have only been included in the FAST5 Netball World Series since 2022 and only because they're desperate to get into the Olympics so they've belatedly started building the men's international game.

Not so long ago in 2018 the World Netball outrageously declared that international netball will remain female only bucking the trend of all the other sports federations moving towards gender equality.

Imagine if they hadn't spent decades sabotaging the growth of the men's game in order to keep it "female only"? They'd have been in a much better position to bid for inclusion in the Olympics at least for 2032.

I wouldn't say there's no chance at all but if World Netball had better leadership they'd be in a much better position than they currently are.

It was more than just “draw a circle on a map”.

They had to put a detailed submission in to the

Olympic Programme Commission and then have meetings with them to put the case forward for inclusion.

World Lacrosse are also on the list of IOC-recognised international sporting federations, just like Squash and Flag Football which were also added to the LA2028 Olympic Games, along with Baseball/Softball.  They all put detailed submissions in.

Here is the link: International Sporting Federations Recognised by the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

So why is Rugby League not on that list?

Why is Rugby League not even recognised by the IOC?

It’s not going to be gifted to them.

Rugby League has got a lot of hard work to even be recognised because they are not even listed as an IOC-recognised international sporting federation.

If you’re not on that list, you don’t get to have your sport played at the Olympic Games.

For info, the international governing body for rugby league is the International Rugby League

Has the International Rugby League even contacted the IOC and/or put together a submission to have the sport included at the Olympics?

I don’t know if they have or not.

It’s also interesting, and I only noticed it a few minutes ago, that World Netball has made it on to the list of International Sports Federations Recognised by the International Olympic Committee.

That’s an important and essential step if you want your sport to be considered for inclusion at the Olympic Games. It means the IOC is happy with things like your governance amd development of the sport.

It may or not be at 2032, but I’ve gotta say Netball are on the road to play a future Olympic Games.

One down, 34 to go.

So yes, to have a chance to be added to the Brisbane 2032 Olympic Games, any sport (for example Netball Fast5, AFL Nines, NRL Nines, etc) will need to put a strong case against these 35 Criteria if they wish to be given serious consideration by the Olympic Programme Commission as an additional sport.
