Rhythmic gymnastics? I very strongly doubt that. Much like dressage for example, if you have no knowledge of it you've got no idea what the hell is going on. At least in sports like swimming or athletics one can simply see who finished first or jumped the highest or something.

Well, I think it's a very "artistic" sport that many people like to watch. Obviously I'm biased because in Brazil it seems very popular during the Pan Ams (open TV show the whole competition), maybe because Brazil wins the most golds in the team events. But it's like Figure Skating here (the most popular winter sport), which I don't think many people know how the scoring works, but watch it for the beauty?

That's how it works here, unlike rhythmic gymnastics, which apart from the obvious handful of diehards, just really nobody cares about or finds impressive or interesting to watch and mostly calls it a bunch of people throwing some hoops and ribbons around :p

I know this question is kind of off topic, but what happened to the Netherlands? The Dutch group was very active in the late 90s and earsly 00s, and from 1995 to 2007 Deventer hosted one stage of the Grand Prix series. The group even won a bronze medal at the 2000 Grand Prix Final. What happened that rhythmic gymnastics basically vanished from the country?

Something from an unknown date (I assume the 1970 mentioned is wrong, since it's talking about events in the 90s and 00s, but with time travel technology one can never be too sure):

https://resource.wur.nl/nl/show/Nationaal-kampioene-stopt-met-ritmische-gymnastiek.htm

It's about a triple Dutch champion retiring. It says she became Dutch champion in 2000 for the first time, winning all events, and a year later doing the same. However, KNGU (gymnastics federation) then decided to stop the whole rhythmic gymnastics national team to focus all resources in women's artistic gymnastics. Van Montfoort says her coach (a Bulgarian who was world champion herself) got fired and she had to go train at her local team. She and some others kept on going because the 2003 world champs were supposed to be held in the Netherlands, but eventually they retired.

Too bad. But I can't say they were wrong. I mean, Sanne Wevers became a world-silver medalist, European champion and Olympic champion. And, quite frankly, she was nobody just three or four years ago. This is the most surprising case I've seen in my life of an older gymnast blossoming very late in her career and winning almost everything. I'm not sure she can still fight for medals, but you never know.

To be fair, this does sound kind of 'Dutch': blooming much later, probably because for young athletes there's still a ton of people who keep telling them (and rightfully so in my opinion) they shouldn't go 100% for their sports career, but also make sure they've got some serious education to fall back on.

I made a mess out of my previous reply, so I'll just make things clear here. Sanne Wevers was 24 when she got her first major medal and 25 when she was Olympic champion. Usually female gymnasts reach their peak from 18 to 20, and very few of them remain a threat for major medals after 23. You have to be a very special kind of gymnast to keep fighting for medals as late as 27 (she was just one month shy of turning 27 when she became European champion). This is incredible. I'm even more impressed after learning that she probably focused on her education first.

Notable changes (some of which were discussed here) include: Swimming at the second week in the same days of Athletics; Judo being held in the last days, as Taekwondo goes to the first days; most Cycling events being held from the second weekend on; all Boxing finals in the first week; Women's Volleyball tournament after Men's (Peru might be fighting for gold after all).

I think Toronto had some problems keeping the excitement for the second week (at the second Sunday, 233 out of 364 events had already been held). I don't think this will be a problem in Lima. In fact, the second week will be VERY busy.

    • Yeah, Anora has been really hard for me to place in my personal rankings. It's a fun and enjoyable film for the most part, but it didn't quite generate the same awe or excitement from me that a few others have this season. Still, I was quite shocked to see Madison lose yesterday because she did a deliver a phenomenal performance in my opinion.    The best actress "race" still feels rather open to me, which adds a bit of suspense to each body's nominations.
    • Anyone remember that  athlete in a European Champs who was given a false start, then protested and got a re-run?  And then false-started twice.   Was kind of like that.
    • Justin Trudeau has resigned as party leader and will resign as prime minister of Canada once the Liberal Party choses a new leader. Once a new leader in selected there will likely be elections shortly after.
    • I'm not surprised. Colturi seems to be trending in the right direction (duh) and the rest of the Italian women's team is nowhere except veterans Brignone and Goggia. The Delagos have regressed badly for whatever reason and even Bassino has kinda stalled despite still being in her prime. The shit will soon hit the fan but it's probably to late before the next OG. It would be ridiculous if Albania wins more medals in alpine skiing than Italy
    • The regular season is over. Tennesse Titans get #1 overall pick for the 2025 draft after NE Patriots beat the Buffalo Bills back-ups on the last day.   Mike Evans (Buccaneers) ended his 11th season with 11th mark of 1,000 receiving yards which ties Jerry Rice's all-time record. Bucs needed to run one more play to get him 5 yards he needed instead of kneeling down a game they had won already.   Wild Card Schedule:   My picks: Chargers, Ravens, Bills, Eagles, Commanders, Vikings

    • Few observations from the Globes.   Nikki Glaser had a nice opening monologue, but everything afterwards was bad. Plus i don't know what the make-up people did to her face, but i thought i was watching a wax figure.. But she changed 10 dresses showing us more of her cleavage, so that was a plus i guess.    This was probably not only the worst Globes, but probably one of the worst major award ceremonies in structure and writing... Everything was so awful... - None of the presenter skits worked and many were just cringe; - The weird camera angles, that widened around the presenters completely showed the audience not giving any fucks about what they were saying and some hiding their facepalms even. I was specifically watching in the background, since in these award shows we only get the camera in the presenters face against the screen, so this was new, but i was astonished how little the people were paying attention.    - Not showing barely any clips, or even images from the movies / series (sadly this has become a modern tradition to "save time") - The idiotic showing of the nominees. Not only without images from their performances, but them in a small picture on the side, while the screen was a damn Google Map with an arrow on their placement. Like WHO CARES where they sit in the room, show the person on the full screen... Morons.   About the winners:   - Like pretty much all winners on the movie side, with the exception of Emilia Perez, which i don't like at all and don't think it deserves awards.. - Especially happy for The Brutalist and Fernanda Torres;   - Anora was being hyped so much. Watched it, absolutely hated the first half, picked up greatly in the second, but in the end an above average film 7/10 for me. Not getting anything yesterday was a bit surprising if you'd followed the race, but not saying i'm sorry for it. Madison did a great performance, but her stocks are falling for an Oscars win and she will probably settle for only the Nom.   - Ariana Grande does a nice job in fooling people, that she is a good singer (which she is not) and now that she is a good actress (which she is not). Someone is getting screwed if she gets an Oscars Nom..   - Pissed that they didn't have the DeMille and Burnett awards on the main show, because of "time", but we now have the nonsense Box Office and Stand-Up comedy awards.. Everyone would have preferred a tribute to Davis and Ted Danson with a recap of their careers, rather than 30 minutes of useless stuff.   On the TV side it was pretty much as expected. Stoked for Colin Farrell's win.
