this is the rule. Once your gap is bigger than 4 seconds behind after the men part your time will be +3.96 at the start of the women par no matter what

There is some variation of this rule in every event of this kind in skiing and snowboarding. See also, individual and team parallel events.

 

That being said, even with this rule in this event you usually want your best snowboarded first (that was the usual pattern when they had single gendered team events with a free choice of run order).

So this whole competition is basically just a regular women's snowboard cross race? All 4 riders are caught up to each other within the first ~20 seconds of the course on every run.
