It's a bit understandable why some of these have a low number of entries but the women's 100m free is tragic.

The crazy thing is that even if you followed the qualification system before Tokyo and took the 16th place time from the heats, the qualification time would only get slower by 0.1 seconds from 53.61 to 53.71 and there would be only two new qualifiers. That's how insanely fast the Tokyo heats were.

What's the total number of athletes? @Topicmaster1010

Hard to get a concrete number with countries like US and Australia not having their trials yet, some countries having more than two OQT athletes in an event, and some relay only athletes not being finalized.

Id say 615 athletes would be a good guess.

Second OQT achieved at the :IRL Olympic trials with Tom Fannon going under the time for 50m freestyle. He had already swam the time but not at one of the designated events by Swim Ireland.

Team Ireland now up to 5 individuals

Daniel Wiffen (400,800,1500 free)

Mona McSharry (100m breast)

Ellen Walshe (200 IM)

Danielle Hill (100 back)

Tom Fannon (50 free)

Others have the OCT time so we’ll see what happens with them

One month left to go in the qualification period! Here's approximately how many qualifiers we have in each individual event as of now.

If I understand the qualifying process correctly, as things stand it looks like there will be more men qualified than women. It's strange that the IOC doesn't enforce equality in swimming the way they do in the majority of other sports.

The way OCT places are distributed is bizzare as well. They try to equalize the total number of OCT places rather than prioritizing events that have fewer entrants.

Yes exactly, would make more sense for them to try to balance events and male/female entries using this method. Not that every event should have the same amount (would be weird if 1500m free had the same amount of entries as 100m free) but there should be a minimum amount at least per event.

There should really be a minimum of 20 swimmers per event. We are at risk of having multiple events where there aren't enough swimmers to necessitate heats.

Totally agree!

An easy rule change that would be helpful would also be to allow relay-only swimmers to enter any event they have an OCT in (and the OCT can also probably be made a bit easier given achieving it just means you are eligible to get a spot by ranking anyway) and to allow two swimmers per country in an event even if one or both have only achieved the OCT as long as they are qualified for another event.

(Obviously without dropping the requirement they swim in at least one relay heat)

A few things:

1. Chelsea Hodges just surprise retired following chronic injuries and surgeries. I’m devastated. She’ll always be an Olympic champion though.

2. @NearPup I agree they should aim for 20 swimmers in events with semis. Don’t care if there’s less than 20 if there’s no semis anyway. Could force universality swimmers to only enter events that are low on numbers. That could be fun.

3. NearPup again: Your second point kind of defeats the whole purpose of A and B cuts. This would lead to the strong swimming countries, who already have an advantage, sneaking in extra individual swimmers using relay spots. You would end up with swimmers from smaller countries not being invited while slower swimmers from big swim countries racing individually purely because their country has good relays. I don’t think flooding the heats with extra B cut swimmers who have no chance of medalling is necessarily a positive.

Having the heats at night with a sleep before semis probably made athletes more likely to give it a crack in the heats. McKeon's swim in particular was the easiest looking 52 low you'll ever see.
