This proposal is some serious nonsense. The team competition is already basically as lean as it possibly can get, and eliminating the team competitions would be extremely bad for the sport (you're talking losing half the medals). And it's not like team competition medals only go to the big countries - Romania and Estonia won their only gold of the games in 2016 and 2020 respectively from fencing team events.

(and no, there are no possible fair formats for a mixed weapons or mixed gendered team event)

The only realistic way to fix this problem is with more quotas but, well, we know that ain't happening.

The transfer of quotas from team to individual makes sense, if the IOC will allow it. They tested a two wave approach in Lausanne and its definitely possible and would allow more athletes to compete, while keeping costs down.

I don't think having the top four decided before the Olympics starts is a good idea.

The two wave approach makes a lot of sense, but presumably the point of that would be to be able to increase the athlete quotas across the board.

It would be better to eliminate team events entirely than to hold this abomination at the Olympics. The team event format they use at the YOG is just completely unfair (the order of the weapons and the genders has a huge impact on the final results).

What I meant is allow the individual athletes to finish... send them home and then bring in the team only athletes for the team events. That way the village isn't swelled up with fencers...and stays at the same number at any given time.

please, stop even discussing that sh*t! :stop:

they're just a bunch of idiots and losers!

instead of destroying a sport for your own interests, if you're not good enough to qualify in the top 8 teams, just shut up and learn to play better fencing, beasts!!! :redcard: :bones:

I think it should be really more place for individual starters. As IOC will not allow the 2 wave system there must be a compromise.

i think one solution could be to allow 6 teams per weapon. And all 3 team fencers should participate in the individual. The freed up 6 places should be added to best ranked fencers without team.

the arguments of the Swedish federation are valid. Fencing is too concentrated in too little countries in the Olympics and in long term could harm the sport.

and if you are good enough you will qualify in 6 spots too 😂

Until the IOC can get its act together and bring back the missing 1000-1500 athletes (or start removing sports) it might be best for fencing to drop the team events. Honestly, events with less than 10 entrants should not be happening

Yea... at one point the IOC will target fencing for the axe if it doesn't evolve.
