Yea... at one point the IOC will target fencing for the axe if it doesn't evolve.

Fencing's spot in the olympics is and will be safe, for as long as IOC president is an olympic fencing champion, as he likes calling himself. Which means that there isn't any chance fencing is removed, at least not for the next two or three olympics.

There's nothing wrong with the team events being the most important for the qualification, the team events are the heart of the sport. Instead of trying to destroy the sport, maybe the lesser nations should actually make an effort to improve in fencing.

The one good solution I can thing of is to only allow the nations to qualify for 4 out of the 6 team events, which would mean that the maximum number of athletes quotas per nation would go down to 14 from the current 18. Similar to how in some sports the nations couldn't qualify in all the events. Even the top nations wouldn't lose much with this change as their two weakest teams most of the time flop anyway at Olympic Games.

if "evolving" means destroying hundred+ years of tradition in a perfectly working (and growing) sport, then it's rather the IOC to be targeted and the idiots in charge to be dismissed before it's too late...

no, please...we already experienced the 4 weapons rotation (and it was a disaster for the sport and for the athletes involved)...

let's not give those idiots any chance to cut anything short, being the number of events nor the Countries' full access to every event...

by the way, mr. Alisher Usmanov has been re-elected as the President of the World Fencing Federation (which is a good thing, as he's strong enough to send stupid ideas back to where they should be)...

and :ITA Milan is going to host the 2023 World Championships (the main Olympic qualifying tournament, as always)...:cheer:

:ROU and :EST won their only Olympic gold medals in 2016 and 2020 respectively in a fencing team event. There is a lot of depth in fencing  events, the reason we see so many American and South Korean medals is that it’s much easier to qualify out of those continents. Qualifying in fencing team events is already half the battle because it isn’t rare for the sixth best team in the world to miss out.

The qualification system is really only “broken” for European fencers, who have to face a truly brutal path to the Olympics.

In men's epee- there are too few quotas, too many competitive athletes and teams (probably at least 20 teams could challenge for medals on a good day). Reducing the number of teams there is even more ridiculous. But for the rest, which is still 10 out of 12 events...

The Swedish claim that "many world class fencers failed to qualify with this system and this is bad" and then proceed to suggest a system where way more world class fencers would be cut.  Almost all top fencers who failed to qualify this time - which is the only time with a full programme of 12 events- did so because of compatriots ahead of them in the ranking, how many countries with a "world class fencer" in an event failed to qualify ? Let's see, looking at the ranking at end of the OQR.

W Foil: no country with a top 30 fencer failed to qualify

M Foil: the only non qualified with a top 30 fencers was POL (Siess #21)

W Epee: GER had Ndolo at #25

M Sabre: no country with a top 30 failed to qualify

W Sabre: ROU had Pascu #16, ESP at #24.

An average of 1 country with a top 30 fencer non qualifying in that event (notice: all of them European) is not that bad.

Secondly: what would change if the qualification system really had as priority the individual qualification, and not giving free spots for diversity's sake * ? Let's give a spot to the top 34 fencers (max. 3 per country) and consider a team qualified only if they have 3 fencers qualified, and see how many spots the so called "top teams" would lose: none, instead they would have taken more spots- FRA in place of HKG in W epee, KOR instead of HKG in M foil and so on. 7-8 teams per event would qualify in this case, with some other countries qualifying 2 individuals.

* Like in the Swedish simulation, where plenty of Africans who barely scored 1 point in world cups would qualify, because yeah more countries.

Going off the Tokyo 2020 qualification system, these are the changes I’d make.

24 quotas - Teams qualification same as Tokyo 2020

5 quotas - Top 5 (Individual Ranking) non-qualified fencers from NOCs without representation in the event (no continental restrictions)

4 quotas - winners of the 4 zonal tournaments

1 quota - winner of a new international last chance qualifier tournament

1 quota - host country if unqualified (if host country is qualified quota could be reallocated using results from LCQ or Individual Ranking)

1 quota - universality invitation (if no NOCs are eligible, then reallocation with same criteria used above)

    • It may also be that Ceccerelli saw that the conditions in the Italian youth teams were very poor and that is why she insisted on setting up her own team (the results of young Italian skiers unfortunately confirm this). A private team will always be better than a team with 10-12 skiers with max. 3-4 coaches, a one doctor and a physiotherapist. Colturi is the only skier in her team and she has several coaches, a masseur, a doctor etc. Of course, it costs money, but since the parents are famous and have money + Red Bull got involved. I don't understand why she can't start for Italy again? Red Bull should care more that Colturi starts in Cortina under the Italian flag than the Albanian one + Red Bull, as a brand, always has a bigger sales market in Italy with a population of 60 million than in small Albania. I hope that this can still be reversed by next year. For this we need talks between the federation + Colturi's parents + Red Bull + possibly the Italian Olympic Committee. Colturi may be a skier equal to Brignone or even better in the future. We can't lose her, so we have to do now!
    • I`m very disappointed with this weekend. Only becouse of Ghiotto form I`m happy. Unfortunately, the women's team will not function well if Lollobrigida skips most of the training camps and Fontana starts alternately in short tack and long track. It will end with her not winning any medals here or there, because it`s already clear that it will be very difficult to achieve good results in long track. I hope that she understands this, because in short track she has a real chance of winning medals in the women's relay and the mixed relay but in long track not.
    • Tragic performance of the Italian women's team - last place and probably something bad happened at the start. There are so few starts in the team that it will be a problem to even qualify for the World Championships - 8 best teams. After Lollobrigida's return and Fontana's addition, I was counting on much more, but it seems that there are too few joint trainings. With individual quality, we have no right to lose to the Czechs without Sablikova, or anonymous Korea. And unfortunately this start will count for a lot, because there are only 2 more and our chances of playing at the World Championships are minimal. In my opinion with Fontana going from Short Track to Long Trackand vice versa, we won't be much use in the team. Here great teamwork is needed, not improvisation. As of today, there is very little chance that we will qualify the women's team for the games.
    • men advanced to Division A for the first time since 2018 (when they went 1-8). Don't expect much progress next year
    • Ok, but there we are talking about a person who has parents from different countries. Colturi has nothing to do with Albania.
    • There are few people here from Austria, Switzerland, Norway and Finland.
    • The worst editions in XXI century for us were Vancouver: 5 medals (only 1 gold for Razzoli's on the penultimate day) and Sochi: 8 medals (but no gold). Turin was already a prelude to this bad period, although the number of gold medals was ok. Overall we won fewer medals at home than in 2002 and this was probably the only case in the 21st century when the host country won fewer medals at home than 4 years earlier, either in summer or winter. In general the years 2008-2016 were very bad in our sport, both in summer and winter. Only 2018 in Korea was a slight rebuild + 2 fantastic summer editions in Tokyo and Paris. in Beijing 2022 we won a lot of medals - 17 but only 2 gold (If it weren't for Gogga's injury, I think it would have been 4 gold).
