Men's Basketball Qualification to Summer Olympic Games Paris 2024

Qualification system: https://olympics.com/en/news/how-to-qualify-basketball-paris-2024-qualification-system

  • France gets a spot as hosts, subject for confirmation (should be no big deal).
  • The 2023 World Cup will award 7 spots: 2 from Europe and Americas, and 1 from Africa, Asia and Oceania).
  • The remaining 4 spots will be awarded through two rounds of qualifiers.

The FIBA Olympic Pre-Qualifying Tournaments ("FOPQTs", seriously?) will feature 40 teams, that's 28 from the World Cup Qualifiers, and 12 from the World Rankings. That's 16 European teams, and 8 from Americas, Asia-Pacific and Africa.

The teams will be split in 5 groups of 8 teams each, where each group winner will advance to the next round. My suspicion is that the groups will be continental.

FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournaments ("FOQTs") will feature 24 teams, that's 16 teams from the World Cup, 5 from the Pre-Qualifiers, and one additional World Cup team from the Americas, Asia-Pacific and Africa.

The teams will be split in four groups of 6 teams each, where each group winner will qualify to the Olympics.

So, there is chance for Poland to play in one of these tournaments after all?

If my math is right, some of the 32 teams from the last World Cup Qualifiers will miss the Olympic Pre-Qualifiers.

Poland is 13th in the World Rankings, which should help.

Here are the teams currently eligible for the FOPQT.

Asia-Oceania: :BRN:IND:KAZ:KSA 4 teams from WR

Europe: :BEL:BIH:CZE:EST:GBR:HUN:ISL:ISR:NED:SWE:TUR:UKR 4 teams from WR

I think it's different for Europe and Asia, based on this

https://www.fiba.basketball/news/pre-olympic-qualifying-tournaments-a-new-path-to-paris-for-countries-that-don-t-reach-world-cup

for Asia it will be :KOR:SYR:INA:TPE , those 4 eliminated in the 1st round

but for Europe this says "Four other teams will be eligible from the EuroBasket Pre-Qualifiers Second Round."

looking at EB 2nd round qualifiers, :MKD:POL:POR won their groups and :CRO is the best runner-up. so I assume these 4 teams will participate alongside those 12 mentioned.

LOL @ Russia!!! No Olympics for you bud.

As for Lithuania, they may fail to qualify like they did in the 2021 Olympics.

the new FIBA World Ranking for the men is out

therefore, we can predict the 6 Pots of the Draw of the Olympic Qualification Tournaments (some geographical/political restriction might be enforced in the draw, but nothing is clear at the moment)

p.s. the draw is going to be held in November, but it's only speculation, no official date has been announced yet

Pot #1

:ESP (no. 2 in the WR)

:LAT (8)

:LTU (10)

:SLO (11)

Pot #2

:BRA (12)

:ITA (13)

:GRE (14)

:POL (15)

Pot #3

:PUR (16)

:MNE (17)

:DOM (18)

:FIN (20)

Pot #4

:NZL (21)

:GEO (23)

:MEX (25)

:LBN (28)

Pot #5

:CRO (30)

:CIV (33)

:ANG (34)

:PHI (38)

Pot #6

:EGY (41)

:BAH (57)

:CMR (67)

:BRN (69)

let's remember the format of the OQTs: there will be 4 Tournaments with 6 teams each, only the winners of those tournaments get a spot to the Olympic Games

the 4 tournaments will have 2 preliminary groups of 3 teams each (Group A with teams from Pots 1, 4 and 5; Group B with teams from Pots 2, 3 and 6), the top 2 teams in each group advance to the semifinals and the winners go through to the final and decisive gold medal match.

    • I have reported this again and they said it should be fixed now, please let me know if you are still facing issues.
    • more countries added to the list of US ban    you can't travel to USA if you are from : burkina faso , niger , Laos , South sudan , mali , sierra leon ...
    • Yes, but what I mean for Serbia is that everything changed there (unfortunately for us ). 2022 was an unbelievable mess, that's not the case anymore now with just one athlete who has really gone for it and made it, so I'm 99% sure they'll accept it this time.   Who knows though. Plus there's always 1-2 bigger countries here or there who reject something, but it's not gonna be 16 places I'm afraid
    • Doping by Event Type When we look at which events have the most doping cases, a few categories stand out from recent sanction records: Long Distance (3,000m and above): 32% of cases Sprints (400m or less): 24% of cases Jumps: 12% of cases Javelin: 8% of cases Middle Distance (800m–1,500m): 8% of cases Hammer: 8% of cases Steeplechase (3,000m SC): 4% of cases
    • From 2020 to 2025    These three countries alone make up almost two-thirds (61.9%) of all current doping violations in athletics worldwide. It’s worth noting that 199 of World Athletics’ 214 member federations have no athletes on the current ban list. This means the problem is really concentrated in a small number of places. Here’s a look at the top countries: Rank Country Total Violations Percentage Region 1 Kenya 119 24.74% Africa 2 India 108 22.45% Asia 3 Russia 73 15.18% Europe 4 China 26 5.40% Asia 5 Turkey 20 4.16% Europe 6 Italy 18 3.74% Europe 7 South Africa 18 3.74% Africa 8 Ukraine 17 3.53% Europe 9 United States 16 3.33% North America 10 Morocco 15 3.12% Africa
