In athletics, Uruguay claimed three medals at the South American Championship in Sao Paulo.

 

  • Valentín Soca was gold in 5000 m with 13'55.42.
  • Déborah Rodríguez was silver in 800 m with 2'03.94.
  • Emiliano Lasa was silver in long jump with 8.08 m.

In rugby, the Teritos were runners-up at the U20 World Rugby Trophy.

They upset Scotland by 37-26, and lost the final versus Spain 39-32.

Meanwhile, the Teros started the World Cup preparation by defeating Chile 26-25 at the Estadio Charrúa.

In rowing, Martín Zócalo y Eric Seawright finished fourth at the U23 World Championship. Nicole Yarzón was 12th.

 

In university sports, Uruguay has just two competitors at the FISU Summer World University Games in Chengdu: Bautista González and Taissa Pedreira, both swimmers.

In tennis, Ariel Behar reached quarter-finals of the Wimbledon men's doubles, together with Adam Pavlásek. They lost 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 to first seeds and champions Koolhof / Skupski.

 

In basketball, the men's national team will play the FIBA Americas Olympic Qualifiers in Santiago del Estero.

 

In motorsport, the TCR World Tour and TCR South America will race at El Pinar, featuring Lynk factory driver Santiago Urrutia.

  • Edinson Cavani has moved from Valencia to Boca Juniors on a free transfer.
  • Manuel Ugarte has moved from Sporting Lisboa to Paris St Germain for a €60 million fee.

In athletics, Manuela Rotundo was gold in javelin at the at the Under-20 Pan American Championship with 55.49. Also, 17-year-old Gonzalo Gervasini was silver in 1500 m with 3'51.79 (under the rain). Meanwhile, Juan Pedro Álvarez did 11.13 s at 100 m and 21.72 s in 200 m.

 

Also in athletics, the World Championship will featur six Uruguayans: Valentín Soca (5,000 m), Emiliano Lasa (long jump), Santiago Catrofe (10,000 m), and Nicolás Cuestas, Andrés Zamora and Cristhian Zamora (marathon).

In basketball, the men's national team is playing the FIBA Americas Olympic Qualifiers. They defeated Colombia 80-65 and lost to Chile 78-70. Today they play the Virgin Islands.

 

In rowing, Cloe Callorda was bronze at the Under-19 World Championship.

 

In sailing, Hernán Umpierre and Fernando Diz finished 24th at the World Championship. Dolores Moreira (ILCA 6) and Stefano Caiafa (ILCA 7) performed even worse.

In basketball, the men's national team lost to Bahamas 76-62, and is out of the 2024 Olympics.

 

The national federation has been poorly managed for decades, and I don't see much progress other than hosting matches thanks to the new home-and-away format.
