Athletes celebrating their birthdays during the Summer Olympic Games 2020

Recommended Posts

Scrolling through the entry lists, I randomly found that :ROC Aleksandra Maksakova will celebrate her birthday on an actual competition day, which is too awesome.

It would be curious to know how many Olympians will contest their events on their birthday. It's a small subset of Olympians with birthdays during the 16 days.

518 Olympians (so about 5%) will be celebrating their birthdays during the Olympics (23-8th)

Here are the Canadians celebrating their birthday on the day of their competition:

Mandy Bujold on July 25th first round of 51 kg boxing

Nicole Hare on July 26th in the repachage of women's four rowing* (only if they qualify for this round)

Matt Mullins on July 28th in rugby sevens (guaranteed a match here)

Derek Gee on August 3rd in the Men's team pursuit track cycling

Georgia Ellenwood on August 5th on the second day of the heptathlon

Anicka Newell on August 5th in the women's pole vault final (if she qualifies for it)

Roland Varga on August 6th in the C1 1000 m

Nik Matveev on August 7th in the K4 500m (if they qualify for this stage)

Haven't checked the rest, but our weightlifters Eko Yuli Irawan will compete a day after his birthday and Deni will compete a day before his birthday (both compete in 25 July)

I tried to make a list of athletes competing on their birthday for 24 and 25 July.

On 24 July.

:AUT Louisa Altenhuber, lightweight double sculls

:SWE Rebecka Blomqvist, football

:CUB Daniella Fonseca, table tennis

:ITA Gianluca Galassi, volleyball

:GBR Jacob Draper, field hockey

:AUS Jack Hargreaves, rowing four

:ZAM Fikile Khosa, football

:NED Malou Pheninckx, field hockey

:ROU Sonia Ursu, basketball

Also, it is possible that tennis player :USA Marcos Giron will play on that day, but draw for tennis isn't out yet. First round is on 24-25 July.

Rowers :CHN Liu Xiaoxin and :GER Oliver Zeidler will have repechage of their events on that day.

On 25 July, apart from :ROC Maksakova in equestrian dressage.

:BAH Joanna Evans, swimming 400 free

:SRB Bianca Busa, volleyball

:ARG Julieta Lazcano, volleyball

:CHN Liu Yunchen, badminton

:POL Piotr Myszka, sailing RSX

Also, the first round of women's 51kg in boxing is on that day. :CAN Mandy Bujold might compete, I say might because some will have a bye in the first round and I'm not sure how this will be decided.

In tennis, :GRE Maria Sakkari and :AUS John Peers might play their first round matches depending on the draw.

Only 2 SVK athletes will celebrate their birthday during the games but none of them will have competition on that day

Filip Polášek (Tennis) 21st July (Day -2) - No competition for him that day

Patrik Jány (Shooting) 29th July (Day 6) - No competition for him that day

26 July

:ROC Aleksandr Askerov, sailing RSX

:ROC Evgeniya Ivavona, water polo

Athletes that might compete.

:CAN Nicole Hare, rowing four

:POL Olga Michalkiewicz, rowing four

Repechage on that day, not sure they will compete.

:JPN Hiroyuki Ikawa, skeet, has to make the final to compete on that day

:KAZ Anastassiya Lavrova, table tennis, will need to win two matches in previous days

27 July

:AUS Kiana Elliott, weightlifting 64kg

:BRA Carolina De Oliveira Saad Gattaz, volleyball

:ROC Violetta Kolobova, fencing team epee

:MGL Onolbaataryn Khulan, basketball

:BUL Linda Zechiri, badminton

:POL Sylwia Zyzanska, archery

Athletes that might compete

:POL Natalia Partyka, table tennis, needs to make it to round of 16 to play on that day

:DEN Carina Cassoe Kruth, equestrian dressage, Denmark will need to qualify for dressage team grand prix special

28 July

:AUS Emily Chalker (Smith), field hockey

:GBR Susannah Townsend, field hockey

:CAN Matt Mullins, rugby sevens

:CHN Chen He, sailing finn

:FRA Frank Ntilikina, basketball

:JPN Keisuke Osako, football

:ROC Veniamin Reshetnikov, fencing team sabre

:RSA Matthew Sates, swimming 200 individual medley

Athletes that might compete

:AZE Loren Alfonso Dominguez, boxing -81kg

:JOR Odai Al Hindawi, boxing -81 kg

It's round of 16 on that day and they might have to play and win a round of 32 match.

:HUN Bence Majoros, table tennis

:POR Tiago Apolonia, table tennis

They need to reach the quarterfinals to play.

:ROC Olga Frolkina, basketball

Semifinals for 3x3 tournament on that day.

I hope I haven't missed someone.

On 29 July

:IND Shamsher Singh, field hockey

:KOR Kang Baek-ho baseball

Athletes that might compete

:CHA Marlyse Hortu, archery

:POL Slawomir Naploszek, archery

It looks like that the first knockout round in individual archery competition will be spread in three days. If that's the case, then I should have put :POL Sylwia Zyzanska in the list of athletes that might compete on 27 July, not in the one of those certainly competing.

:KAZ Abikhan Amankul, boxing 75 kg, round of 16 day, might have a round of 32 match.

:USA Nicole Melichar, tennis doubles, semifinals of doubles and quarterfinals of mixed doubles on that day.

On 30 July

:BRA Luiza Campos, rugby sevens

:MOZ Daizy Nhaquile, sailing laser radial

:USA Ariel Aitkins, basketball

:VEN Eliecer Cancelo, volleyball

Athletes that might compete

:RSA Martin Binedell, swimming 200 backstroke

:SUI Roman Mityukov, swimming 200 backstroke

Final of the 200 backstroke on that day.

:ZAM Avell Chitundu, football, team needs to qualify to the quarterfinals.

:SLO Darko Jorgic, table tennis, will need to make the final.

:FRA Nassira Konde will be on the french roster for rugby sevens as a reserve.

:SRB Nina Stojanovic, mixed doubles semifinals if she teams up with Djokovic.

On 31 July

:FRA Leonie Periault, triathlon mixed relay

:GER Hanna Granitzki, field hockey

:JPN Natsuha Matsumoto, field hockey

:USA Jordyn Poulter, volleyball

Athletes that might compete

:MNE Danijel Furtula, athletics discus throw, has to make the final

:GER Michael Jung, equestrian eventing, dressage part for some on that day.

Great work! When I saw the thread title, I immediately came here to say Sakkari but you beat me to it

I believe that :BRA Nicole Pircio, rhythmic gymnast, also celebrates her birthday on that day.

She does, I just include in the list athletes who will compete on their birthday. I left her out because rhythmic gymnastics start later on.

    • Honestly, I think you guys have a much better chance of success here than we do. It's already difficult to maintain this sport, and with this ridiculous format this year, things have gotten even worse. Years and years participating in the elite and we haven't been able to evolve; it was just a waste.
