crolympics 22 Posted January 26, 2020 #5 Share Posted January 26, 2020 I've just read in croatian media that South Africa gets a free quota, which would be a shitshow.
intoronto 4,242 Posted January 26, 2020 #6 Share Posted January 26, 2020 So when did South Africa decide to send their wp teams? Makes no sense at all. I wonder if FINA pressured them to send teams to get full continental representation.
Vektor 3,195 Posted January 26, 2020 #7 Share Posted January 26, 2020 RIP Russia's and Georgia's chances for a quota if that's true. If there will be only 3 quotas for the OQT, Croatia, Montenegro and Greece will qualify.
Dunadan 1,103 Posted January 26, 2020 #8 Share Posted January 26, 2020 Any official confirmation? It's surely true that South Africa have relaxed their criteria and will have more athletes in Tokyo across many sports...https://www.sascoc.co.za/2020/01/24/six-months-count-down-to-tokyo-2020-olympic-games/

Though I personally don't expect it to be true. Sending WP teams would be pushing it even for more relaxed standards, as they have already said no to way more competitive athletes (including London 2012 medalist Hartley). #banbestmen
phelps 6,862 Posted January 30, 2020 #10 Share Posted January 30, 2020 according to a few prestigious sources, it's basically confirmed (still, not official, but almost) that South Africa decided to take advantage of their "free quota" in both the men and women's Waterpolo Olympic tournaments in Tokyo... therefore, for what concerns the men's division, the final qualification tournament ( Rotterdam, March 29th-April 5th) will only award 3 spots... and it's confirmed that it will be a 12-team tournament (so far, only the 5 European sides / / / / and are officially confirmed as starters in this tournament...the remaining 6 teams however should be all from outside Europe, with more European teams -in ranking order- from the last ECH standing-by waiting for possible withdrawls of teams with priority)...
