  1. Like you have taste and others don’t . Joking aside, it’s whatever. Just participating is fun enough for me. You, me, @Agger, and @Wanderer should form to the anti-committee to make sure the real best song wins
  2. Artists don’t make money either. Streaming has killed artist revenue. The only people making money are the labels. The music industry has become just as bad as the other major industries out there. I get that marketing and producing are important, but give the artists what they damn deserve.
  3. That would be the least surprising thing I’ve heard all day. To quote @Monzanator “Money is king” (even if I try to fight that culture, it’s still true). Well, I’m always open to an original song from any Totallympian, so hopefully you’re able to record it.
  4. Exactly, which is TISC is the world’s greatest minefield. I have made respect for any song that’s able to win, even if their not my favorite.
  5. Yeah, the mainstream has really closed the door on creativity, but I wouldn’t say that the variety of music has dropped, it’s just harder to find like @Werloc said.
  6. You’re very poetic though. So while the message of your song might not be the most mentally stimulating, I can still enjoy your music. I also recognize that you do this for a living, so you have to try appeal somewhat to mainstream if you want money. My tastes aren’t mainstream, so while the song you submitted last year wasn’t my favorite, I was still good because of the other factors you have going for you. Plus you have a fantastic voice, a very skillful vocal control. It really comes down to how creative you can be, and you’ve been plenty creative, at least from the songs of yours that I have listened to, or that have made my playlist. I mean, it really doesn’t matter how I feel about your music because art is subject, and it’s more about what you get from it. I love the poems I write, but their not for everyone, and they deal with a lot of uncomfortable or political topics. A lot of people are turned off by that, but I love writing them, and that’s what matters in the end. Plus, you never know who’s reading/listening to your work. I’ve been surprised a few times by the standard of people who enjoy the poems are release dates once in a while. P.S This man does a very good cover of Arcade (like seriously damn good). https://youtu.be/7k_4Dz8zabk
  7. It’s a big issue, but you can’t completely right off an entire genre. As much as I hate pop, there are still some great songs out there, and pop songs regularly get points from me. I hate (like send it down to Satan hatred) country music, but even their I can find some songs that absolutely derive acclaim and merit.
  8. I can’t stand Latin pop music. English pop is all about love, sex, breakups, or drugs. Spanish pop is about parties, drugs, sex, love, and breakups. Both are the worst! There’s zero lyrical merit to most of those songs. Those are generally the songs I eliminate after one round of voting. I want something unique, that carries a good or interesting message, that has a solid musical composition, and that shows good vocal range, control, uniqueness. If you want my twelve points, that is the criteria for earning them. I realize some of the US song selections go against that, but I realize my criteria is quite different from what wins, so “if you can’t beat em’, join em’.”
  9. I didn’t get that feeling from the Portuguese song. For me, I hate music that doesn’t convey a message. So Mexico (bleh), Israel (meh), the others were good through. I also hate how every song as become “You dumped me, and I don’t need you.” “Y’all mistreat me, but I’m independent.” “Girl I love you.” etc. Those songs aren’t all dead to me because their are some really creative ways of expressing those sentiments, but songs like the New Zeland song score hugest one lyrical merit in my book.
  10. Well, you could’ve taken a hint from the video for Portugal. Google translate also exists, and you could find the lyrics for both. Personally, I don’t need to know the language to appreciate a song based off my judging criteria. It does hurt the songs in the lyrical merit category, but they both made up for that much more then the Spanish songs (of which I’m more familiar with the language, and understand much more of the song).
  11. I expected our song to do just as well as Canada’s, so I was quite shocked when we couldn’t keep pace. I wasn’t a huge fan of the song, but it’s still a really good song in my opinion. China was a huge shock for me as well. It did manage to distinguish itself from the other pop songs in my voting though, so I could see the appeal. I gave China 1 point in my personal vote. If I would have given China 2 (which I had for a while), it would have received 3 points from the US jury instead of 0. There are more Spanish language users than Portuguese language users. Language familiarity plays a significant role in voting I think. I absolutely agree that the Portuguese had a lot more going for them, and that I preferred them to the Spanish songs, but the standard of Spanish songs was actually really good this year. My voting was pretty different from the status quo it seems. Even my reserves found themselves quite a ways down the pack.
  12. Not to be that guy, but I’m starting to hear/see some chatter about the IOC/Japan looking at canceling Tokyo2020. Most our not from sources I respect/trust, but their are a few people who’s opinions matter that are beginning to indicate this may be happening behind the scenes.
  13. Yeah, Coldplay’s album left quite a bit to be desired. I love their old hits like Viva La Vida, Clocks, Yellow, etc. Imagine Dragons have been my favorite group since 2012. Most artists in my main playlist get a few songs, but the Imagine Dragons get like 20. My favorite songs of theirs are Next To Me, Radioactive (I like the Kendrick Lamar remix the most), Demons, Friction, Whatever It Takes, Stuck, Gold, Warriors, Thunder, and my all-time favorite of theirs, Natural. Besides those two, I’m also big on One Republic, X Ambassadors, and Sleeping At Last. I’ve really been into Sleeping At Last lately.
  14. @Vic Liu We have very similar tastes, at least when it comes to English language alternative bands Those are some great choices.
  15. I don’t know, executing a good flirt hole makes you feel like you just an ace
  16. Dude, the North/South America is so simple. The US has the third largest population in the world. South America has three samba dancers, an indigenous dude, and a alpaca.
  17. For those of you also on the Olympic sub-Reddit, what do you make about that post from the guy claiming to be a NOC official. He claims the IOC is actively looking into canceling the 2020 (2021) Summer Olympics and 2022 Winter Olympics. I think it’s all made up, and complete bullshit, but I’d love to know what others think.
  18. Found the way April will try to kill us this year
