  1. She was lucky not to have Soviet, Bulgarian and North Korean gymnasts competing against her, but she was still able to beat gymnasts from strong nations such as Germany, Spain and Japan (and Romania, though the country had never had any good results in this sport before 1984). But I agree that the most significant medal Canada has ever earned was at the World Cup in 1990. All the big guns competed against Fuzesi, so walking away with a medal was nothing short of extraordinary.
  2. Honestly, I don't know why rhythmic gymnastics was added to the program while trampoline and even acrobatic gymnastics were not. No Commonwealth nation, except for Canada, has even remotely remarkable achievements in rhythmic gymnastics -- Canada has a gold medal at the Olympics and a bronze medal at the World Cup, but all the other nations are waaaay behind in this sport. In trampoline, Canada, Great Britain and New Zealand are quite strong -- and even South Africa and Namibia are building interesting programs.
  3. Brazilian songs: Chico Buarque and Simone - Iolanda Los Hermanos - Anna Júlia (this was a huge hit at the time) Ultraje a Rigor - Marylou (this one can't be taken seriously, since it's about a chicken) Bebeto - Jessica Legião Urbana - Eduardo e Mônica Tiririca - Florentina (satirical song, and the singer is a clown who later became the most voted federal legislator in the country) Capital Inicial - Natasha LS Jack - Carla (also a huge hit) Seu Jorge - Carolina Sandy and Junior - Maria Chiquinha (children's song) Latino - Renata (a song where her ex-lover badmouths her... trash) Sidney Magal - Sandra Rosa Madalena (his one-hit wonder, and one the most important songs from the "kitsch" era in Brazil) Capital Inicial - Fátima Nenhum de Nós - Camila, Camila Ivete Sangalo - Cadê Dalila? (this one never made much sense to me, but once it plays people go crazy anywhere in the country) Roberto Carlos - Lady Laura Legião Urbana - Mariane Ana Carolina - Eu comi a Madonna (literally, I ate Madonna, but in Brazil "eat" is a synonym for "f*ck", so this became something like a lesbian anthem) Biquini Cavadão - Dani Tijuana - Renata Marcelo D2 - Sou Ronaldo Cazuza - Bete Balanço Pitty - Desconstruindo Amélia Titãs - Marvin (huge hit) Latino - Cátia Catchaça Fernanda Abreu - Kátia Flávia, a Godiva do Irajá (incidentally, Irajá is the neighborhood where I was born, in Rio) Raul Seixas - Al Capone Elis Regina - Madalena Milton Nascimento - Maria, Maria (LOVE this one) Bruno and Marrone - Marianne Nx Zero - Larissa Jota Quest - Maria Roberto Carlos - Ana Carolina and Seu Jorge - Carolina Jorge Vercillo - Monalisa Biquini Cavadão - Janaína Os Raimundos - Pequena Raimunda Skank - Jackie Tequila Legião Urbana - Andrea Doria Armandinho - Paulinha (lil' Paula, literally) Ed Motta - Manuel (kind of a satirical song, though the singer is more of a "conceptual" person who thinks he's smart and everybody else sucks) CPM22 - Regina, let's go! Los Hermanos - Bárbara Capital Inicial - Giulia Tom Jobim - Luiza
  4. Is there any hope for Aruba? In 2015 they had a big chance in Sailing and Bowling, but they fell short. No clue about how their athletes are shaping up for the next edition.
  5. Amazing! I hope he also able to give their first medal at the Pan Am Games next year.
  6. According to Wikipedia, qualifiers in Acrobatic Gymnastics are:
  7. So, do you think that the Mediterranean Games should be an event for sailors and open water swimmers only?
  8. Vanuatu, Solomon Islands and Cook Islands won their first-ever medals. So nice!
  9. Any word about which nations qualified in acrobatic gymnastics?
  10. I am very surprised. I expected the competition to be a lot weaker. Everyone is far from their best shape, but some of these girls mean business (especially both Russians, both Israeli and the Italian girl). Before the competition, I even thought this could be the perfect opportunity for Nicol Ruprecht (from Austria) to sneak into a final and hopefully fight for a medal, but nope. The last few years were amazing for the sport, with new countries earning medals at the World Cup for the very first time: Brazil and Switzerland in 2013, Finland in 2014, Georgia in 2015, and the United States in 2016. Then in 2017 we did not have a new country earning a medal, and in 2018 competition is very, very tough since the first stage. Whoa.
  11. They are showing the opening ceremony now, and it looks like they will show part of the individual qualification, which is nice.
  12. Wow. I've been suspicious about Georgia. Any word about them?
  13. Thank you! I was looking for a live score system, but the official website is not helpful at all. If you find a live stream, please PM me.
  14. I would love to see a smaller, more compact version of the Olympics, with only the best of the best competing in a low number of sports. This might look radical, but in my opinion there are far too many sports contested at the Olympics, and we need to make the games smaller and the venues should cost less. 15. Konstantin Kuzovkov won Georgia's first ever medal at the World Cup circuit. Funny thing is he is originally from Russia. A gymnast from Saudi Arabia finished in fourth place on vault and was denied what would have been the nation's first ever medal at the World Cup series as well. The top 3 athletes (including Kuzovkov) were a bit overscored while the Saudi athlete was severely underscored. Sometimes I feel like this sport is not fair at all.
  16. Also worth noting is that a Filipino won a medal on vault. This is only the second ever medal for the Philippines, after a silver medal also on vault that goes way back to 2005.
  17. Yes. A male gymnast finished fourth on Rings, which is a fantastic result given the level of the competition.
  18. Aruna Budda Reddy won India's first ever medal at the Artistic Gymnastics World Cup circuit. Nice to see India's program reaching new heights after Dipa Karmakar's astounding success.
  19. I've always been suspicious of Biles' Therapeutic Use Exemption, to be honest, but this is more of a pet peeve than anything. Still, I'm not a fan of hers. My heart goes out to her after the horrific situation she has been through, but this doesn't make me a fan of her style and her performances. But I digress. What really bothers me is how overscored American gymnastics are, to the point I simply don't want to watch big competitions anymore because the results never seem fair. Biles is just one of them.
  20. This has been going on for some time now, but I believe it has not been talked about here, and it deserves its own thread so all the members can see how disgusting everything related to the subject is. Former USA Gymnastics doctor Larry Nassar has been accused by 150 girls, over two dozen of them female gymnasts -- including four Olympic champions -- of sexually abusing them. Even when these girls were as young as 6 years old. The thing is: USA Gymnastics knew about this and did nothing. They offered former Olympic champion McKayla Maroney 1 million dollars in exchange for her silence. But now other girls have spoken. The International Gymnastics Federation and the International Olympic Committee remain silent on this subject. 21. Well, you somewhat contradicted your own criticism in the previous sentence.
  22. What? Judo, Taekwondo and Karate are sports originated in Asia. Badminton and Table Tennis are a lot more popular in Asia. Long distance running in Athletics is all about African nations, and sprint running is all about the Caribbean. Then we have Rugby, which was won by a small nation from Oceania in 2016. Beach Volleyball and Skateboarding are pretty much dominated by the US and Brazil. It's time for you to realize that there are clear attempts for global integration at the Summer Olympics, but zero effort when it comes to the Winter Olympics.
  23. Talk about misinformation (or just being a troll). The only countries in South America where you can seriously practice snow sports are Argentina and Chile. So, tropical nations should send their athletes to other countries because an event with global aspirations do not afford to contemplate realistic weather conditions all around the planet? This is not a matter about being evil, as much as it is about you being totally ignorant of the facts.
  24. I wonder if it is the maintenance cost that scares some nations away from the idea of building an ice rink or a bunch of curling sheets, for example. But I agree that ice sports are, in theory, a lot easier to develop in tropical nations. Snow sports, on the other hand, remain impossible to perfect in some nations. I mean, it's not impossible for an ice rink to be built in, say, Brazil, but we just can't buy the Everest and ask for it to be delivered to Rio de Janeiro, you know.
  25. 1) As I said before, I would prefer the Winter Olympics never to happen, so I guess it's pretty clear I don't watch it. Tried my best to like it, but I just can't bring myself to. 2) Again, like I said before, the Winter Olympics are nothing but a lie, in my opinion. I'm sure a bunch of narrow-minded and delusional people organize the Winter Olympics, so it's not really surprising that the event is mostly ignored by half of the planet, even though it still seeks for integration (we all know it is a lie, but this is how things are branded).
