Yup, Italy have something around 300 curling players (+200 of this are master). We had an Olympic effect with Torini 2006, the curling mania, and it's surge again after Beijing gold medal. It's a great moment for our curling

That is very impressing! Discussed this with my team mates during the swedish super league and we think Retornaz will win the olympic gold in 2026!

Also interesting that only 1 of 8 quarter finalists in the National (the grand slam event last week) was canadian

Sunday October 15th 2023 becomes a dark day for Scottish sport - they were beaten by England 8-3 at mixed curling world champs. Can't think there will have been many occasions when England have come out on top against Scotland in curling. :shame:

Anything can happend in Mixed. Smaller nations usually send their best players. The good nations send some people who just wants to play for fun and who is not occupied with the grand slam or something else that happens at the same time as the qualifying national championship or the worlds (as it is for now when top-30 teams for men and women in the world plays Tour challenge). Team Sweden that now is seed 1 for the playoffs after 8/8 wins is a combination of two retired females (with good merits though), one male with no international experience and a skip that wasn´t even part of the winning team in the swedish mixed nationals, but stepped in because the original skip decides to play in the Tour challenge Tier 2 competition in Canada instead .

just look at Belgium in quarter finals!!

Such circus in the spanish football team. No one still knows if someone will actually play on friday against Sweden in the Nations league premiere, also working as olympic qualification.

And there was a game finally that ended 3-2 to Spain after a penalty goal in the very last second

    1) Not sure what you mean with superstar and how many superstars there are if Mihambo doesn't qualify. Personally i am not sure if there are any superstars in athletics right now. Not sure if there is any country except Sweden where someone like Duplantis would be recognized by more than 10 % of the population.

    2) All the former greats are injured (reflection of the poor quality of german coaches), like so many other of the best german athletes (Mihambo, Baehre, Klosterhalfen, Kaul).

    3) I am not sure if they will change anything, this just isn't how Germany works (anymore). Even someone like Jogi Löw was allowed to keep going after the embarrassement at the 2018 football world championships. It is the same with german politicians, they glue themselves to their position and refuse to leave no matter what happens. Germany has been "infiltrated" by bureaucrats that only care about their own position and not about what is best for the country, there is zero accountability. Of course it also doesn't help that almost all discussions in Germany are based on ideology and not pragmatism. The german energy/migration/defence policy is as braindead/ideology-driven as the german sports system (complete refusal to use performance enhancing substances or hire GDR coaches, while the rest of the world has zero problem doing those things). In a global competition you can't really afford ideology.

If Germany wants to do better in sports, they could start by cutting the funding for the NADA and (if possible) make it (close to) impossible for german athletes to be tested by german doping control officers outside of Germany. You can't expect to be competitive at world stage while doing your best to fight doping and also not installing and incentives for athletes to dope. German athletes get pathetically low medal bonuses.

If you mean 10% of the population in the specific country I really hope for the sport that it is not the case. Just being able to talk about Sweden I am pretty sure the majority know about Daniel Ståhl, and when almost 10% of the population watched the championship everyday - I even think some other swedish non-stars are known by 10%.

imagine that, there literally no wind tonight in Budapest. Terrible condition to send a discus :p

Not that practice matters but they say Ståhl threw 73.65 in practice on pre-camp in good winds. I guess this winning Throw, in good winds would have been at least that long! And of course 4  throwers could have been over 70 in windy conditions

  6. wow! Denny could have won many finals with that result but finish 4th.

And Czech Did the third ever 70+ Throw in a world final, after father Alekna and himself - and get that Championship record stolen a minute later, in bad discus Throw conditions!

disastrous from Swedish tv, commercials destruering celebrations and almost missed the 110m hurldes final because of the commercials

Mostly known as a classic power abuser. As one of the pundits on Dutch TV said yesterday (someone with lots of connections into among other things Spanish women's football): "You'd wish these players a world title, you'd wish Spain a world title.....just not this coach. Every win for the Spanish women's team is a loss for women suffering from male power abuse."

Which was not to say she was unhappy with Spain winning, because as she said: the players absolutely deserved it, nothing against them at all.

On the 'bright' side for the Netherlands: one of the current Dutch players, who I believe has a Spanish and a Dutch parent, plays for the Netherlands now because she was one of many being bullied and abused out of the Spanish football world by Vilda :p

He also kissed a player on the mouth after the game and grabbed his balls standing besides the princess

    also new FIFA RANKING:

    1. Sweden

    2. spain

    3. Usa

    4. england

    5. Germany

Max one of the world rank 1 and the world Champions (rank 2) may even have a chance to reach the olympics.

Apparently the call room tent has no AC and the athletes are grilling over there which might have led to some of these wheelchair exits :mumble:

:SWE Simon Pettersson kicked out of discus final after :NZL foul protest (Connor Bell in).

Correct decision based on the pictures. But it is problematic when such decisions can be made so long after.

what if an athlete in the first attempt in qualification, makes the Q-standard with white flag. He/she will not even be allowed to do the next attempts because he/she is considered as already qualified. Then if that mark would be changed to foul the day after (or even just after the qualification is over), that athlete would not even have had a chance to have a second result?

  9. Sweden has upgraded the security risk level to 4/5 after Al Qaida calls for attacks on Sweden (and Denmark). Great Britain is even are warning from travelling to Sweden.

All because our free speach laws can´t stop a few number of idiots from burning the Quaran.

Apparantly that is enough to attack swedish embassies, have huge protests in the middle-east, call for terrorist attacks despite Sweden is probably one of the most islam-friendly countries in Europe.

    Sweden's semifinal curse continues...

3 semifinals in the last 4 world cups and 2 of the 3 lates euros. And we will need to beat Spain later this year to even get the chance to repeat our olympic final losing streak too  But Spain was the better team in this match so congratulations Spain :hatoff:
