Men's Field Hockey FIH Olympic Games Qualifier 2019
Dolby replied to Totallympics's topic in Field Hockey
There is another solution. Ghana/Namibia and other African nations tell South Africa: Enough is enough. If you don't want to take use of continental quota stop participating in continental qualifiers. If Ghana would have won the African qualifiers, their ranking would not have come in picture. -
Men's Field Hockey FIH Olympic Games Qualifier 2019
Dolby replied to Totallympics's topic in Field Hockey
Malaysia didn't get the spot because Japan qualified as Continental Champions, releasing the host quota. Host quota reallocation has to be done in World tournament only. If South Africa indeed withdraws its women's team, its place will be taken by Korea and not another European team. Continental distribution of Olympic qualifiers: Men's: Asia: 2, Europe: 5, Pan-Am: 2, Oceania: 2 and Africa: 1 Women's: Asia: 3 (or 4), Europe: 5, Pan-Am: 1, Oceania: 2 and Africa : 1 (or 0) This is much more diverse than what we see in many other team sports. Except Africa, all other continents have a number of good teams. Also, I don't think having some sort of restriction regarding runner-up (or if needed even lower placed teams) of continental tournaments, to ensure that we don't have completely one-sided matches. For Rio, similar restriction were placed on Brazil getting host quota. We can argue whether the correct ranking cut-off should have been 20 or 25 or 30 or whatever, but that is just nitpicking. -
Apparently the feat is not great enough for his name to be mentioned

Need to see draw document. I think there are additional rules for groups. IIRC, atleast in Singles, it was like first seeds are placed, then those ranked 16-32 or something like that and then rest. Organizers wouldn’t want a group of 1,14,15,16 so there must be something to prevent that. Top 4 is really tough specially considering they skipped World Championship but if they keep on getting the wins who knows.

Weightlifting Qualification to Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympic Games

Just to clarify even if Thailand lifters are allowed to compete, they have already missed the qualification second period and are hence ineligible to qualify for Olympics. -

Khalistan is a violent Sikh separatist movement based out of mainly Canada and UK. It gained traction in India in late 70s and reached its peak in 80s and early 90s. Since then, the movement has petered out in India but still has large support in overseas Sikhs. During its peak, apart from the numerous terrorist attacks in India, including assassination of Indian PM and Punjab CM, the movement was also responsible for Kanishka bombing in which a Boeing 747 was bombed mid-air killing more than 300 innocent people (majority of them were Canadian citizens). Also, worth noting is that Khalistani movement talks about an independent Sikh nation out of Indian Punjab, where Sikhs are in majority and have all rights while keeping mum on the various atrocities committed on Sikhs in Pakistan. The Khalistan that they talk about doesn't even include the Pakistani portion of Punjab, which has Nankana Sahib, birthplace of Guru Nanak and Lahore, the capital of the greatest Sikh ruler, Maharaja Ranjit Singhji. If Jagmeet Singh was just a supporter of an independent Sikh state, I would have had only some reservation about him. But, he regularly attends events where portraits of people convicted of political murders are prominently displayed. He has even refused to denounce Talwinder Parmar, person widely regarded as mastermind of Kanishka bombind. Also, you cannot be a vocal supporter of dismemberment of another democracy while aiming for the top spot in a democracy. India is a sovereign nation, whatever problems we have, we will solve ourselves. A Canadian PM trying to stoke separatist movement in India, is simply not acceptable.

Jagmeet Singh is a Khalistani. Wearing a rainbow turban doesn’t absolve him of his terrorist links.

This rendition is purely in Hindi. The variations that you are seeing in this rendition is because the singers are not only from different regions of India but also belong to different genres of music. It is this diversity which brings the flavour in this rendition which is very popular and is thus the de-facto the unofficial version of the anthem. The rendition that may have been performed at 2010 CWG games ceremony must have been the official version of the anthem. Personally, I prefer the official version with proper protocol for official functions and this version (along with various beautiful versions of Vande Matram) for unofficial programs. Also, though our anthem is officially in Hindi, the language used is such that one can easily claim that it is in Bengali or Sanskrit as well. If you liked this rendition, you should also check the following video, where a number of artistes sing the same line in different Indian languages and styles.

Indian national anthem “Jana Gana Mana” is in Hindi. Our national song “Vande Matram” is in Bengali. Maybe you can share the link to the video to the version you are referring to.

We do encounter a number of problems with respect to the vast diversity of languages. We not only have many different languages, we have languages from different Language families (Indo-European, Dravidian and Sino-Tibetan). Plus, there is regional/cultural pride associated with these languages and so it creates even more problems. But, by and large we manage because of 1) large influence of Sanskrit on almost all the languages 2) large population understanding Hindi (which is basically the common term used for the various dialects spoken in North India) and 3) growing influence of English. Also, it is quite common for people to have basic knowledge of atleast 3-4 languages (Hindi, English, their mother tongue and languages close to their mother tongue). For example, I can converse/write/read Hindi, Gujarati and English easily. I can read and understand Sanskrit with some effort. My mother tongue is Marwari, which is a sub-dialect of Rajasthani dialect of Hindi, in which I can converse easily. During my stay in Bengaluru, I picked up key words of Kannada and can read albeit with a lot of effort. I can also understand almost all the dialects of Hindi. Can understand the gist of what is being said in Marathi/Punjabi. I think we have been the most diverse participant of TISC in terms of language. To the best of my knowledge, till date we have entered songs in Hindi, Haryanvi, Rajasthani, Bengali, English, Malayalam. And this year's entry is a curious mix of Konkani and Portuguese.

In Dressage, it is a limit of only 1 per nation. In Eventing, both spots could go to the same nation as well. Shruti and Anush are trying hard to be in top 2 in Dressage, but it seems they will fall short. Fouad Mirza is at present in pole position in Group G but is yet to meet the MER. Also, if China and Thailand, fail to qualify 3 combinations each, they will also fall from team quota to individual quotas and be in group G. But, Mirza is in good form and hopefully he would be able to not only meet the MER but get enough points to qualify through additional quotas in case China/Thailand fail to qualify as team.

This is not a new phenomenon. Over the ages, it has been trend. Younger generations are always left leaning and as they age they tend to lean toward right. In fact, there are many variations of "If You Are Not a Liberal at 25, You Have No Heart. If You Are Not a Conservative at 35, You Have No Brain" type to capture this shift.

Some will skip Olympics. Some will miss due to not having enough Davis Cup participation. Some might be sacrificed for Doubles players. So, in view of your research, I will modify it as top 80, sure shot qualification. 80-120 chance at qualification. Lets wait and see how Sania Mirza performs in her comeback. She will have only 6 months to improve her ranking which would be really hard. Even if she manages to be in top 10, it doesn't change much. Till last Olympics, Sania was the key for Mixed Doubles team. But, with no Men even near top 10, I don't see how we will qualify a Mixed Doubles team. And a WD team of Mirza/Raina would lose either in 1st round or at max in 2nd round.
-
I think top 60 is sure shot qualification. 60-100 probable qualification. Outside 100, no chance. The way Sumit is progressing, I am hopeful he will qualify at least.

Sports minister Sonowal wanted to host a grand event in his home state before state elections. So, he and BAI President Himanta basically forced Badminton players to play in SAG.
-
Any of the nations could host them as these games are very low key. I doubt many good athletes will take part. Regarding security situation, there would be issues with Pakistan hosting but no nation would have a problem in travelling to Sri Lanka. Though I don’t follow the games, its medal table is my favourite of all multi-sports games.

Equestrian Qualification to Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympic Games
Dolby replied to dcro's topic in Equestrian
So, at present, China and Thailand are not eligible for team quota. Also, only 3 riders (2 from China and 1 from Thailand) have met minimum requirements in Group G. Also, not sure why Fouaad Mirza is not trying for CCI4*-L events. He has achieved MER in CCI4*-S event so should be eligible for CCI4*-L but I still see him competing in only smaller courses.
