3570 new cases today, more than any other day, all time high ! I won't be surprised if that reaches 4000 tomorrow or Saturday. no surprise at all, social distancing is dead and buried . COVID-19 is not on the headlines anymore, nobody cares and it seems almost everybody thinks this is over ! I'm very very disappointed in most of my friends, my relatives, even my own sister, most of them are highly educated but now I found out how irresponsible they are I had been mocked by some of them for being "sissy" (aka responsible) the death rate is still relatively low (what a shame to consider +50 deaths per day as low ) but we will see if that changes in a week or two with this new wave which is probably the second peak.

yes that's correct, that should be "Chin" because we pronounce "Q" like "K", I thought that's French, didn't know it may have another background.

Weightlifting Qualification to Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympic Games
MHSN replied to vlad's topic in Weightlifting
I don't know and it's kind of impossible because you have to consider SO MANY things. some countries are limited to 1 or 2. some injuries, some coach decisions etc. -
Weightlifting Qualification to Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympic Games
MHSN replied to vlad's topic in Weightlifting
This document by IWF explains few other things about this very complicated qualification system https://www.iwf.net/wp-content/uploads/downloads/2020/05/T2020-QS_Application-Process.pdf for example it says in case NOCs qualify more than what they can, it won't be up to them to decide, but IWF will pick the best ranked athletes, for example right now IWF would pick Shi Zhiyong, Li Dayin, Tian Tao and Chen Lijun for China men's team. Li Fabin (61kg) would miss the Games, but somewhere else in that document it says to me it means countries can make changes by reporting their athletes as injured or something for example if China wants to send Li Fabin (instead of let's say Tian Tao) they can simply write to IWF that Tian is injured and should be removed from the list. -
Lahestan to be accurate, actually if someone uses the word Poland/Polska I'm sure 99% will react like what ?, where is that ?! West of Africa ? and yeah, we call some other countries with different names. and I can't see a clear pattern, some of the names we use are French (like Belgium/Belgique, Germany/Allemagne, Switzerland/Suisse) some are Arabic (Egypt/Mesr, Comoros/Qamar, Jordan/Ordon, Greece/Yunan) and some of them are just different even though Poland is probably a unique case, I don't think any other country officially use the name Lachistan/Lahestan ! but I'm sure for example we are not the only one calling Netherlands as simply "Holland" ! we also enjoy to add -estan/-istan at the end of country names Bulgaria/Bolgarestan. Serbia/Serbestan, Armenia/Armanestan and there are lots of examples.
-
let me surprise you that in Persian we also call your country as "Hindustan" (or Hendustan to be accurate) often shortened to "Hind/Hend"

I mean number (and name) of events for example ... never mind @Vojthas already said that beside that if it's too early for that, I would like to know the list of non-Olympic sports, I heard about Baseball/Softball, Chess (and other versions of board games), Cricket, Jujitsu, Kabaddi, Karate, Roller sports (which disciplines ?) Sepaktakraw, Soft tennis (maybe ?), Sport Climbing and Wushu. you confirm that ?
-
@Vic Liu Do we know the name of events (or at least the number of events for each sport) for the 2022 Asian Games in China ? or it's still too early ?
-
only when I'm asked to. I'm not doing that just for the sake of it. actually I did that once for "sports-reference" few years ago but I think they fixed only half of them.

I also see something like million mistakes for Iranian names

Weightlifting Qualification to Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympic Games
MHSN replied to vlad's topic in Weightlifting
Finally IWF published the new qualification system https://www.iwf.net/2020/05/29/ioc-approves-revised-weightlifting-olympic-qualification-system-tokyo-2020/ no revolutionary change, they just added a new period, 3.B ! from October 2020 to April 2021. and all weightlifters (even those who fulfilled 6 required participations) have to participate in at least one event in this new period. -
it's good to be optimistic , we will see if they can do it, I'm not optimistic though . some Asian countries are still struggling with the virus and December in Winter isn't supposed to be better. to my surprise, Iran is registered in 11 sports ! (doesn't mean they will participate in all of them) btw I hate these kind of websites, there is nothing "interesting" in them for me, just some reports and few images. what I want to know is the number of events for each sport and I always have hard time to find it for OCA events. in this official website there is just a link for each sport explaining obvious things. they never bother to publish handbooks for each sport I usually find them usually in Taiwan NOC website. but I found that somewhere else https://unitedworldwrestling.org/sites/default/files/2020-04/infos_entries_sanya2020.pdf

actually Iran had more than 3000 something like 2 months ago. (with fewer tests) it went to less than 1000 for few days but almost a month after "re-opening" we see another rise in the numbers and I'm afraid it will go higher. higher than previous peak (even though still hard to compare because the number of tests are different) if you walk in the streets, some people act like the virus is gone and everything is over. what Iran did was different than any other country so maybe that makes sense to be a unique case . right now there is almost no restriction, only gatherings are still banned (sport, funeral, even religious gatherings which is huge for this regime) , schools are optional and people have to wear mask in public transport (that's only for Tehran and they are not really forcing it) nothing else. almost everybody is back to work and I have to say most of these new cases are from one province in South, which had only few cases 3 months ago. that province is now back to the complete lockdown. that's the hottest place in Iran, specially in summer the heat there is almost intolerable for non-local people. it seems the myth of heat kills the virus made people there to think they are safe and they didn't take all these advises seriously.
-
Today was the first day of schools after the re-opening here, but since it was optional only 15% of the kids nationwide showed up ! I assume the number is close to zero in big cities.

Yes, so far no "big deal" , but I have to say that scared the shit out of people mostly because of those previous experiences. we had 2 deaths and 23 injured but none of them because of the earthquake directly ! but we know people hurt themselves when they are scared after something like 4 months at least for a day corona is not in top of the headlines ! kind of interesting information since this is a sport forum, that 1990 earthquake was the worst in the modern history of Iran and killed +37000 but still it could be much much worse if it wasn't for a football match that kept so many people awake after the midnight and they could survive. 1990 World Cup match between Brazil and Costa Rica.
-
we definitely don't laugh at earthquakes. small or big. because we still remember two deadly recent earthquakes, Bam (2003) and Manjil/Roudbar (1990) . each of them killed around 30000 people. we always consider anything related to earthquakes very serious. and yes the standard isn't that great, everybody knows that everybody is afraid of a possible earthquake in Tehran, and we know it will be a huge disaster, very populated with big buildings, and this one was serious and woke up so many people . we are told to be careful for next few hours (and if possible not sleep) because they don't know if that was the main one or the worse is yet to come. from what I see so many people are spending the night on the streets. even in my neighborhood half people are sleeping the night in their cars. interestingly I didn't feel anything ! even though I live in west of Tehran, the source was in east. and for a reason, earthquakes here always happen in middle of the night,
-
A 5.1 richter earthquake just hit near Tehran ! the last thing we need right now

the end for Ilya Ilyin, even though as mentioned in the article he almost had no chance to qualify. https://www.insidethegames.biz/articles/1093895/ilya-ilyin-announces-retirement he lost both of his Olympic titles, but he is still a 4 time World Champion and 2 time Asian Games gold medalist. there is no re-testing for those events ! interestingly he is still considered as a hero in Kazakhstan, they (I mean people, not officials) either have no problem with doping or probably they think he was innocent ! despite being one of the biggest cheaters in history of this sport, I still liked his personality.

Tokyo 2020 Day after Day as it could have happened
MHSN replied to rafalgorka's topic in Summer Olympic Games Tokyo 2020
@Gianlu33 it will be the biggest surprise in the history of Olympic wrestling if Snyder and Sharifov win medals in Greco-Roman I know it's impossible to have knowledge about all sports but taking a look at @rafalgorka predictions, at least in wrestling it's almost copy/paste of 2019 results. we had some surprise winners (specially bronze medalists) mostly because the draw was rigged (yes it was) to help Kazakhstani wrestlers, therefore some lucky wrestlers won some medals they couldn't even dream about. likes of Nurov, Deng and that Swiss guy only can win medal with a super easy draw like that. this is my prediction for freestyle . but remember this is for August 2020, (if they wouldn't postpone the Games) , my prediction for 2021 is different. some youngsters will catch up with big names soon. and I also didn't consider ranking and seedings, because for example Uguev and Ravi are currently 1st and 4th in WR, with no more ranking event left (the last one being cancelled), they were supposed to meet before the final. 57kg: 1) Uguev 2) Ravi 3) Atli and Higuchi 65kg: 1) Rashidov 2) Otoguro 3) Aliyev and Bajrang 74kg: 1) Burroughs 2) Sidakov 3) Chamizo and Kentchadze 86kg: 1) Yazdani 2) Taylor 3) Naifonov and Shabanov 97kg: 1) Sadulaev 2) Mohammadian 3) Snyder and Sharifov 125kg: 1) Petriashvili 2) Akgul 3) Zare and Khotsianivskyi * I really had a hard time to pick a 4th guy for 86kg. I think there are something like 10 wrestlers more or less in the same level. -
and Ara Abrahamian leaving his bronze medal on the mat there are lots of accidents like this, minor and major, I would write more but for some of them I can't find the video. but I have one for today This is 1996 Olympic final between Abbas Jadidi and Kurt Angle. in Iran this is still considered as the "biggest robbery in sport" even though I don't agree with it. the final score was 1-1, at the time the tiebreaker was the number of passivity warnings which was also tied 2-2. so it was up to the refs to decide which one was more "active" ! apparently there were "unwritten rules" at the time that in cases like this whoever scored first or whoever forced his opponent for the last passivity warning (Jadidi in both cases) has the upper hand. but that was something "unwritten" not the rules, from what I saw the match was pretty even, Angle was more active during the regular time, Jadidi attacked more in extra time. the call could go either way. and the host nation usually gets those kind of calls. even though I believe Jadidi scored a takedown out of the mat in extra time. he could win it 2-1. but what was funny was Jadidi's reaction, when refs were talking to decide the winner, he went there and was present in their short meeting and he claims he heard 2 refs called him the winner but the center ref (from Mongolia) was disagreed. he thought he won the match 2-1 (2 refs against one) but then the center ref raised Angle's hand ! even after 20 years Jadidi still can't speak English in a medium level, so I highly doubt he could understand the conversation this is also very famous in USA wrestling community, they are still making fun of Jadidi's reaction. to have a better idea why this match was super important, it could be Iran's first ever Olympic gold medal after the "Islamic Revolution" and it was in USA and against an American wrestler, (we are talking about 24 years ago when everything was Anti-American, before Khatami presidency era) Iran won that first gold medal the next day by another wrestler, Jadidi's biggest enemy PS: Jadidi used to be very popular at the time, not now, he got into politics and did lots of stupid things after that. I can say he is somehow hated mostly these days.

I had a post about Buvaisar Saitiev and how great he was, he was usually a very calm and polite person but there was one accident in his career. in Athens 2004 Olympics, he beat his old rival Murad Gaidarov in quarterfinal 3-2 in extra time. this is the video of what happened after the match. while wrestling for Belarus Gaidarov is actually from Dagestan (same as Saitiev) and apparently they were old rivals back in their own town, Gaidarov had to wrestle for somewhere else, he caused problems for Saitiev multiple times even though he never beat the "genius" , their 2003 WCh final ended only 2-2 for Saitiev. because of bad luck World finalists had to face each other in the QF (no repechage at the time) unfortunately I couldn't find the match on youtube but I remember Saitiev scored twice on chest-to-chest. while they needed 10 guys to stop Gaidarov, but it was Saitiev who threw the first punch, but amazingly they only disqualified Gaidarov. in a normal world they had to disqualify Saitiev too but he was a BIG name and also he was from Russia. they let him continue and the rest of the competition was too easy for him. Brzozowski and Laliyev was no match.

Tokyo 2020 Day after Day as it could have happened
MHSN replied to rafalgorka's topic in Summer Olympic Games Tokyo 2020
I remember you prepared a table based on percentage for Rio 2016. unfortunately I can't remember the details, but I think my/our predictions about wrestling (specially freestyle) was not far from what actually happened. did you ever compared it to the final medal table ?! -
off course, no doubt about that, but I think nowadays we don't need a Poirot to solve most of the cases. I 100% support death penalty for rapists and for those who kill people in cold blood. of course doing something stupid in the heat of the moment is another story. the biggest issue with the judiciary system here is they leave it to the victim's family !!! which usually put them in uncomfortable situation to make that big decision. we had a famous case couple years ago, two guys stole a car with a 8 months baby in it, they found the car unworthy and left it somewhere remote without calling anybody to come collect the baby. that poor baby's body was found 5 days later. that was a big question at the time if it was a first degree murder and should be punished by death penalty or not. that was VERY cruel but then it wasn't 100% intentional to kill the baby. they just didn't care. even though per rules here putting someone in need (like a baby) in situation like that is equal to killing, after all the one of the guys received death penalty.
-
If I'm not wrong here they already released more than half of prisoners, probably something like 60/70% , even though that was 2-3 months ago, now they are calling them back. no more holidays for at least some of them. we had two cases of "prison break", one of them was kind of funny, apparently someone left some doors open and they just ran ! we had videos of prisoners running into the streets with underwear or things like that very unlikely here, because there is death penalty for those crimes. this is probably not a popular opinion here in this forum but that's one of the few rules here that I completely support. human right is for humans, not for those kind of criminals.
