  1. Good work, but I think many countries will use the mixed to bring extra quotas as like you said, the “you must use individual quotas to count” in the gendered races doesn’t apply (and they can’t bring subs specifically for the mixed) For Ireland I’m counting our women’s as 4 new quotas and mixed as 2 men and 2 women (Adeleke is already qualified). I expect Mawdsley will qualify in the women’s too so it might end up being 2 individuals, 5 women relay runners, 2 men relay runners
  2. That’s just because the those countries are more capable of competing in sevens (due to the nature of the sport). The USA (add Kenya, Canada and more) have zero chance of competing in 15s against New Zealand, France, Ireland etc but they can all beat them in sevens. Of course the Olympics has sharpened those countries too and France and Ireland in particular have taken sevens more seriously as a direct result of the Olympics
  3. Medal chances IMO (from unlikely to locks) Athletics Adeleke Mageean Healy (I think the change of coach will unleash her this year) mixed 4x400m womens 4x400m Swimming Wiffen (x2) Gymnastics Rhys Rugby both teams Golf McIlroy, Lowry, Maguire Cycling Healy Gillespie Equestrian Both teams 2 of the eventing team all the showjumping team Boxing all of them Rowing LW double womens pair womens double mens double mens pair Sailing 49er crew Taekwondo Woolley Some (the male boxers, sailors) need more luck than others but that’s over 25 events where it’s conceivable that Ireland could win a medal. One in each of athletics, swimming and gymnastics would be an absolutely incredible return for us
  4. FWIW if you add Winter Olympics, you’ll see most of those countries shoot way over us in medals… I think we can only compare ourselves to European nations of a similar size. Anyway, we definitely have more medal chances than ever before, and all we can do is hope more of them convert/get lucky/have the performance of their lives this summer.
  5. I like the qualification format. For team sports, there’s always going to be “top” teams that don’t qualify (look at how few European football nations can qualify for example). In rugby, the season long format ensures the best teams go through. Then they have a continental qualifier. And a final world qualifier. 3 chances for a “top” nation is pretty loose and those who don’t qualify can’t blame anyone but themselves
  6. Presumably down to 1/1000ths But I’d imagine it won’t matter either way with improvements to come before the end of June
  7. They do, but they’re behind Trinidad & Tobago on the world athletics list, so they’ll have to go faster
  8. yes. That’s correct. I’ve amended it above
  9. As it stands, these are the top nations by time that haven’t qualified yet Women’s 4x100m Spain - 42.85 China - 43.03 Men’s 4x100m: Brazil - 38.19 Trinidad & Tobago - 38.30 Women’s 4x400m: Cuba - 3:26.08 Nigeria - 3:27.29 Men’s 4x400m: France - 2:58.45 Zambia - 2:59.12 Mixed 4x400m: Czech Republic - 3:11.98 Italy - 3:13.56
  10. Horrific changeover from Germany. Congrats to India
  11. Compare what New Zealand, Netherlands, Belgium or any other comparably sized developed country spend The only sports where we could host a senior European championship, never mind a world championships, are those that compete in open fields. We have the British and American collegiate systems to thank for the vast majority of our talented individuals
  12. Oh it made sense. Just pointing out that to most people watching the world feed, both commentators are foreign
  13. “Foreign lass” “world feed” hmm
  14. Mixed (same as yesterday) Greene > Adeleke > Barr > Mawdsley Womens Healy > Harrison > Cadden > Becker Harrison and Cadden come in. Healy moves from 3 to 1, Becker moves from 1 to 4. They’ve said that only change was permitted for mixed so they decided not to make any
  15. We are underfunded compared to most countries. Ridiculously so. In general our facilities are atrocious. Our biggest stars are being developed outside our systems (bar boxing and rowing where the worldwide pools are shallow enough)
  16. Top times in the period 1 January 2023 to 30 June 2024 They’re listed on the Road to Paris site
  17. “Scraped five medals” is a pretty wild phrase considering our sporting history 😂
  18. Even if they don’t, their time will see them qualify. Still, an interesting sign that the depth that might be needed for a medal in Paris may not be as strong as previously thought
  19. Yeah. The lists were a little off for the mixed. The Netherlands only had 4 listed and neither of the women were Bol or Klavar who both ran
  20. The only countries to win heats in mixed and women’s 4x400 ludicrous for Ireland the only other country to qualify both teams on day one
  21. Her first would have been quicker if she didn’t have to swing out to lane 6 for the handover…
