That's what happens when a nation wants to maximize its athlete quotas. Though it may have worked for China (if they finish in the top 6)

China has had a great qualification period. They already have 19/24 individual quotas and unlike the United States who has 21/24 this was all done without the need of the continental qualifier. The down side of course is that they have yet to qualify anyone in men's skeet, but they are in good position in Lahti after day 1 and besides they should qualify at least one athlete at the Asian qualifier.

Good start by France who essentially have a one fence advantage over other nations trying to qualify to the Olympics.

Maybe they were planning to have more than one, but too many nations withdrew? At the very least they get to decide which nation gets lane 4.

I don't see why number of quotas needed would trump ranking.

ICF has been pretty bad at keeping us updated in the past. If they are anything like 2012 or 2016 we probably won't know until just before the Olympics. There are two ways the athlete quotas are reallocated If the same athlete qualifies in both K1 events the athlete quota will be given in the longer distance and the other athlete quota will be given to the next best ranked nation in the 200m If the same athlete qualifies in different boat classes (K1, K2 and K4 or C1 and C2) then the additional athlete quotas will be pooled in four groups (men's kayak, women's kayak, men's canoe, women's canoe) and given to the next highest ranking K4 boat (then K2 then K1 if not enough athlete quotas remain) and C2 boat (then C1 if not enough athlete quotas remain)

No because it's possible nations may have to decline quotas if they qualify too many athlete quotas.

That's why they are trying to have sprint be its own event in 2024 and only have a combined lead/bouldering

Yeah, for canoeing you have boat quotas and athlete quotas. To add more confusion is the six athlete maximum in kayak events so we may have to wait for later until we figure out which events nations will choose to compete in.

I think South Africa only has 2 riders currently, though I imagine a third should be able to reach the minimum based on recent results. Only China and Thailand in eventing don't have a full team with MER right? Edit: And Brazil in eventing too.

Eight quotas were allocated at the world championships thanks to the host quota being reallocated. Regardless Japan has two quotas.

They'll have to change the qualification criteria (which they've done in the past) or at the very least select an event where they know South African athletes will likely be competing.

Group F hasn't announced a competition yet, we may have to watch the composite rankings for reallocation which will likely benefit a European team.

Haha... I was thinking more along the lines of changing the 110m hurdles to 400m hurdles. Maybe also changing the 400m to 800m and 1500m to 5000m to encourage more long distance running.

I think the federation is trying to make the argument that since the FIH stated being in the Top 20 is sufficient enough to compete then South Africa is strong enough to compete without going through the final qualifiers. Whether or not they buy it is a different question.

The men also reach the standard too. To be honest the decathlon needs to be changed so it doesn't favour sprinters so much.

I love that the level of decathlon/heptathlon is so high that athletes are reaching the qualification time/distance for the single event.

The women shouldn't have an issue, but Egypt has a pretty good chance for the upset.

There's also a chance that the tripartite quota won't be allocated (I think Pakistan in the men's was the only eligible nation competing at the World Championships) so that would be another quota reallocated to the world championships.

Since we now know which nations are eligible to receive a tripartite invitations I decide to take a closer look. Currently 18 eligible nations have at least one shooter that has reached the MQS, including Kuwait which has already qualified quotas. Given that there are 24 quotas, it is likely we will seem some of them reallocated, though as Bolivia showed in 2016 nations could be given multiple tripartite quotas. One big difference relative to 2016 is that there is now a fixed quota for each event (2 per event) whereas 2016 the quotas could be spread however they pleased. This has a huge impact on the competition for the quotas. Overall the 10m events have the most competition with women's 10m air rifle having 11 eligible nations, including 3 nations (Andorra, Bhutan and Nepal) having their only MQS mark in this event meaning we can't even have all 18 nations entered. On the flip side both the men's 25m rapid fire pistol and men's skeet have two eligible nations (OMA/PAK and MLT/PAK respectively). Oman has the most options with eligible athletes in all events except the men's skeet. They also have an athletes with a MQS that's in the top two in five events, one more than Malta, Pakistan and Kuwait (ignoring events they have already qualified in). Of course, the quota doesn't necessarily go to the best tripartite nation as they take into account universality and how quotas in other sports are given out. This is why Bhutan is likely to be given the shooting quota despite being the second weakest nation in the women's 10m air rifle.
