  1. Weird, you'd think they would have had at least a semi-final match
  2. Sadly they did. New Zealand has declined the quota. Therefore the Oceania quota goes to Australia's Marina Carrier
  3. The South American RS:X and 470 Championships are this week with Olympic quotas being awarded to the highest ranked eligible boat. Here are the eligible nations (so far registered) Men's RS:X - Women's RS:X - Men's 470 - Women's 470 -
  4. Looks like Brazil will need to defeat Argentina if it wants to defend its Olympic crown.
  5. too with their win over Sweden All that's remaining is the winner of /
  6. The article may not have said it, but considering they aren't listed as a qualified nation, there is most certainly an investigation going on.
  7. After some digging around it looks like there is a protest against the men's 470 boat. Basically they are looking to make sure everything is in order in terms of registration and Olympic eligibility Here's an article about it (it's in German)
  8. With women's football and basketball Canada has now qualified 8 teams to the Olympics. We are one away from tying our record of nine done at the 1976 Olympics when we were hosts. We have four opportunities remaining... Men's Basketball - If we have our best players I would give us a great chance. Still Greece will be hard to defeat. Men's Baseball - Given our performances at the Pan American Games, the lack of the best players may help Canada. Regardless it'll be tough, but at least we still have two chances, though the addition of Chinese Taipei in the second one may not help. Men's Football - It depends on who comes. Our best team could very well qualify, but that's unlikely to occur. In the end we'll likely have to defeat Mexico or the United States (or Costa Rica) if we want to qualify. Men's Water Polo - Our least likely option. Things were already tough before South Africa decided to take its continent quota. We'd have to defeat one of Croatia/Greece/Montenegro to qualify, not to mention other European teams which on paper should be stronger than us.
  9. I guess we'll wait and see if he has what it takes to become the oldest Olympic athlete.
  10. I meant in general. Argentina had 80 more athletes in their Olympic team between 2012 and 2016 (Golf/Rugby Sevens only accounts for a small portion of that difference). 2020 will have more than 2012, but it'll be a drop from 2016 even taking into account women's handball.
  11. Given what happened to Brazil, South Korea had a 2/3 chance to be in a favourable draw. For other sports, it also helps that one of the continent's powerhouse is the host. We saw it in 2016 where it was Argentina in particular (though United States and Canada too) that benefited from the absence of Brazil. In the end it was the relative poor performances of traditional European powerhouses that gave South Korea an opportunity. Even if we went back to the format we had in 2016 we would have seen get the first three spots while fought for the final two spots.
  12. Assuming no surprises, this will be South Korea's first appearance since 2008.
  13. Yeah while it was clear that Costa Rica were going for a penalty kicks, Canada didn't exactly threaten Costa Rica or even play well.
  14. Canada holds on to defeat Belgium. Just need a win against Sweden or Japan to qualify to the Olympics.
  15. Huge win for Puerto Rico, Brazil needs to somehow defeat Australia or France to have a chance at qualifying. Japan defeated Sweden 75-54
  16. That's correct though I don't know why they couldn't host a final tournament to decide the last quota.
  17. Six hours would have been doable. There must be some kind of labor laws against this, though since it's freelance I guess there's not...
  18. Yeah, I imagine they'll make an exception. Just like they did with Oceania athletes after the Oceania Championships were cancelled.
  19. FINA has the Polish Championship to be held in Lodz scheduled for those days.
  20. Looking at the Laser/Laser Radial World Champs, currently are listed in the men's and are listed in the women's. Should that remain unchanged (Cook Islands may compete) then they will automatically qualify to the Olympics, provided that they compete.
  21. Yeah places like Ireland and Singapore had three athletes in 2016. A quick look at the 2016 Olympics, the largest teams not to have trials are the Czech Republic, Finland, Israel and South Korea.
  22. Last month, SwimSwam put together a list of Olympic trials that will be held. Note that this may not be the only way an athlete from those nations can qualify, some selection policies allow for athletes which performed well at certain other meets (like the World Championships) to be selected, but the conclusion of these events should give us most of the swimming team. Here is the calendar of events (yes Netherlands has two events). Ukraine - 10-13 March Italy - 17-21 March Lithuania - 19-21 March Hungary - 24-28 March Denmark - 28 March - 1 April New Zealand - 31 March - 4 April China - 28 March - 5 April Canada - 30 March - 5 April Ireland - 1-5 April Switzerland - 2-5 April Netherlands - 3-5 April Japan - 1-8 April Spain - 4-8 April Russia - 3-9 April South Africa - 4-9 April Netherlands - 9-12 April Hong Kong - 11-12 April France - 14-19 April Great Britain - 14-19 April Brazil - 20-25 April Germany - 30 April - May 3 Belgium - 21-23 May Poland - 20-24 May Belarus - 22-24 May Greece - 28-31 May Australia - 14-19 June Singapore - 24-27 June United States - 21-28 June Sweden - 26-30 June
  23. Not yet, there's a chance that two other Pacific nations (besides Cook Islands) may compete elsewhere to gain world ranking points. Most likely yes, but it won't be confirmed until June.
  24. Gotta expose those loopholes . At least money is no longer a barrier for Pacific nations to compete. Do you know if the three nations per event is fulfilled at the beginning of the event or if it gets recalculated. For example Australia will likely return its K1 1000m quota due to exceeding the maximum athlete quota for men's kayak, that means a Pacific nation gets the K1 1000m quota, but that would mean only two will now be eligible for the K1 200m quota...
