Both and used alternates in their women's football match today. Shelina Zadorsky replaced Jayde Riviere and Michaela Foster replaced Ali Riley. It appears that Riviere will be subsituted back into the team later in the tournament, but that Riley isn't expected to return. Unlike previous tournaments (before Tokyo), a Football player can be temporarely removed from the active roster and replaced by an alternate for any match, as long as there is a bona fide injury, and then return for a later match. Any player that is on the pitch or on the bench for any of the matches is eligible to receive a medal.

Ya, that's the thing. It's not the ideal depth for a competition pool, but it's absolutely within what is allowed for a competition pool. It's fine, it's not a scandal, there are always some compromises that are made when it comes to Olympic venues.
