  1. Both and used alternates in their women's football match today. Shelina Zadorsky replaced Jayde Riviere and Michaela Foster replaced Ali Riley. It appears that Riviere will be subsituted back into the team later in the tournament, but that Riley isn't expected to return. Unlike previous tournaments (before Tokyo), a Football player can be temporarely removed from the active roster and replaced by an alternate for any match, as long as there is a bona fide injury, and then return for a later match. Any player that is on the pitch or on the bench for any of the matches is eligible to receive a medal.
  2. Ya, that's the thing. It's not the ideal depth for a competition pool, but it's absolutely within what is allowed for a competition pool. It's fine, it's not a scandal, there are always some compromises that are made when it comes to Olympic venues.
  3. Canada will be without head coach Bev Priestman for the duration of the tournament. She has been suspended by Soccer Canada due to the drone spying incident. https://www.cbc.ca/sports/olympics/summer/soccer/canada-soccer-priestman-suspended-1.7275945
  4. What is likely to happen, rightly or wrongly, is that quite a few people are going to get fired.
  5. https://www.tsn.ca/soccer/canada-s-men-s-and-women-s-soccer-teams-have-relied-on-drones-and-spying-for-years-sources-say-1.2153674 It appears that Soccer Canada has been using drones to spy on opponents of both the men’s and women’s national teams systematically dating back several years. Bev Priestman has been sent home for the Olympics by the COC.
  6. You may have read the last rites a little too soon. It's now 3-2 for with half an hour remaining.
  7. With all these upsets, is it a good time to remind us all that won gold in Rugby the last time the Olympics were in Paris?
  8. Taking a (very small) risk to score rather than kicking it into touch is definitively weird when point difference isn't a factor. The French live rent free in my head because they use too many anglicisms, not because of anything sports related
  9. They did, objectively, put on quite a show tonight. That's for sure.
  10. Really more of a showboating try than an insurance try, all they had to do at this point was to kick it out to win. Actually fairly poor sportsmanship to go for a try in this situation IMO
  11. Some showboating by Dupoint at the end, seemed unwise The crowd is unreal!
  12. Having Rugby 7s in Stade de France, with the men's medals awarded on day 1, seems like a pretty inspired decision. The crowd is *rocking*
  13. You do realize that competing agasint an athlete in the Olympics doesn't mean you recognize that their country is a country, right? Lots of countries don't recognize or , and don't recognize each other (and are technically still at war), and compete against each other, and of coutse there are quite a few NOCs that don't represent countries at all! being banned from competing in the Olympics would be an actual statement, but just giving their athletes free wins seem conterproductive. No point in drinking poison and hoping your enemy dies IMO.
  14. I always found giving free wins to be an odd form of protest, but y'all do y'all. Would be objectively funny if it wasn't random, unfortunetly it is.
  15. I'm satisfied with this performance, especially given all the distractions.
  16. Good enough performance for in the end.
  17. I wonder how many of Canada's alternates we will see during this tournament. Zadorsky isn't part of the 18 that is on the roster and should be replaced by Riviere later on.
  18. I'm assuming this is on CBC? The world feed is fairly ballanced. is a decent team, obviously anything other than a win against them would be a bad result, but they aren't a walkover and they can be a fairly strong defensive team.
  19. Did they forget to lift COVID restrictions in Loire? This feels like a Tokyo 2020 match.
  20. It feels so weird to be the vilains in a sport other than hockey or curling xD
  21. The difference is also fairly minor in ultra endurance sports.
