  1. Not taking the quotas into account for the distances that will be skated tonight, we have a total of 25 countries already secured of at least one quota:

:ARG :AUT :BEL :BLR :CAN :CHN :CZE :DEN :GBR :GER :ITA :JPN :KAZ :KOR :LAT :NED :NOR :NZL :POL :ROC :ROU :SUI :SWE :TPE :USA

In 2018, 29 different countries competed. Differences so far:

    • No participation in 2018, but quota secured for 2022: :ARG :GBR
    • Participated in 2018, no quota secured for 2022 (yet): :AUS :COL :EST :FIN :FRA :HUN

:ARG will send its first ever skater to the Olympics (women's 500m) and no skater from :GBR had qualified since 1992 and now they qualified both a male and female speed skater. :cheer:

:EST Marten Liiv will almost certainly qualify tonight for both men's 500 and 1.000m, so Estonia will be the 26th country added to the list.

:FRA Loubineaud is now 2nd reserve on the men's 5.000m, 3rd on the men's 10.000m and 4th on the men's mass start. :wall:

No reasonable hope for any of the other countries to qualify. I'm most disappointed by :FIN. They also don't have any talents coming up in the junior circuit.

  2. Final quota men's mass start:

    :AUT x1 :BEL x1 :CAN x2 :DEN x2 :GER x1 :ITA x1 :JPN x1 :KAZ x1 :KOR x2 :NED x2 :NOR x2 :POL x2 :ROC x2 :SUI x1 :USA x2

    Host quota: :CHN x1

Reserves: :BLR :TPE :LAT :CZE :FRA :NZL :COL :FRA

Rule D.2.6 of the qualification document may be applied:

Additional competitors for the Mass Start event, up to a maximum of 30 competitors, may be entered during Games time. Additional starting positions will then be made available to athletes who have been entered and participated in at least one (1) distance/event. The allocation of these additional starting positions will be done according to the Reserve list for the Mass Start event (as per D.2.5), with priority to NOCs without an already entered athlete in the Mass Start event

However, the Belarussian guy has not qualified for any individual distance and :TPE:LAT:CZE:FRA:COL have 0 quota on individual distances. So this rule may only be applied to :NZL Peter Michael who JUST missed out on a qualifying spot on the 5k and might fall out of the qualification spots after the B-group 1.500m later tonight.

  3. Hoolwerf :bounce:

He got a lot of criticism, because he was 24th in the World Cup ranking on the mass start after 2/3 competitions. If he wouldn't be in the top 24 after the final competition today, the Netherlands would lose their maximum number of quota for men of 9. Got the pressure of a whole speed skating loving nation on his back and now he wins the final race!

If Michael sneaks into the 1500m he will also be able to start the mass start, fwiw. He's guaranteed to be a reserve in the mass start, and up to six reserves can enter the mass start if they are already skating another event.

A sad outcome from today: :LAT Haralds Silovs was 0 points away from qualifying for the mass start (lost out on best result to :TPE Tai)

Yeah, it's sad. I like Silovs a lot. However, I wouldn't be surprised if :CHN Ning Zhongyan will kick :TPE Tai back to position 25. Ning decided to skip the 1.500m to focus on the mass start final.

It looks like this is the Olympic debut for :ARG in speed skating.

It also looks like :NZL and :COL will both miss out on these Olympics entirely - :NZL is first reserve in the 10000m and was 3 points away from qualifying in the 5000m :(

Yeah, really happy with :ARG being in. :cheer: I saw it coming for a few years when her times became more and more competitive, but it was always going to be close.

Sad about Peter Michael missing out, he's such a fun skater.

Colombia has some talented juniors, for example the reigning national champion on the women's 500m and 1.000m is a 15-year-old and I wouldn't be surprised if Diego Amaya is going to win a medal during the Junior World Championships this year (if they won't be cancelled). He got a silver medal and two 4th places during the 2020 Youth Olympics. So let's hope for some Colombian skaters in Milan. :)

I know there was a lot of suspense, but I have breaking news: :SWE van der Poel has won the long distance world cup.

Edit: this is actually incorrect, Bloemen has a minuscule chance of catching up, but it involves Bloemen winning the final race and van der Poel not finishing or being DQed.

Not 100% true, all points are doubled during the World Cup Final, so in theory even #11 in the standings Marwin Talsma could still win if all the entire top 10 ends their seasons after the Olympics. :)

  7. Men's 5.000m provisional quota list before the B-Group has been skated:

    • 100% certain if my calculations are correct: :BEL:CAN:GER:ITAx3 :JPN:NEDx3 :ROCx3 :SWE
    • Qualified on time for now, but can all change once the B-Group has skated:
      • :USA Casey Dawson - 6:10.803

      • :SUI Livio Wenger - 6:12.132

      • :USA Ethan Cepuran 6:12.378

      • :GER Felix Rijhnen 6:15.069

      • :NOR Sverre Lunde Pedersen 6:15.116

      • :NOR Hallgeir Engebråten 6:15.130

Men's 10.000m final quota based on my calculations:

    • Qualified based on ranking: :BEL :CAN :GER :ITA :NED :ROCx2 :SWE
    • Qualified based on time: :CAN :ITA :JPN :NED

Reserves (in order): :NZL :USA :FRA :NOR :JPN :GER :USA :NOR

:CHN Shen Hanyang misses out on a host quota by 0.7 seconds on a 10.000m

Women's 5.000m final quota (of couse my calculations, so there could be errors):

    • Top 8 in combined 3.000m/5.000m World Cup standings (max 2 per country): :CAN :NOR :NED :ITA :CZE :NED :CAN :ROC
    • 4 skaters qualified based on time: :JPN :JPN :BLR :CHN

Reserves (in order): :POL :GER :KAZ :USA :CZE :CHN :ROC :NOR

Final provisional list will be published by the ISU around Christmas.

  9. Women's 3.000m provisional quota before the B-Group has been skated. The B-Group will be skated after midnight, and I won't stay up for that:

    • 100% qualified as they are sure of a top 14 ranking no matter the outcome of the B-Group: :BLR :CANx3 :CZE :ITA :JPNx2 :NEDx3 :NOR :ROC
    • Final quota based on ranking between :CHN and :KAZ (:CHN Han Mei qualifies, unless :KAZ Morozova wins the B-Group)

    • Currently qualified based on time:

    1. :ROC Evgeniia Lalenkova - 3:57:876
    2. :CHN Mei Han - 3:58.759 (only relevant if Morozova wins B-Group, otherwise she will qualify based on ranking)
    3. :KAZ Nadezhda Morozova - 3:59.647 (only relevant if she doesn't win the B-Group)
    4. :NOR Sofie Karoline Haugen - 4:02.662
    5. :USA Mia Kilburg-Manganello - 4:02.914
    6. :POL Natalia Czerwonka - 4:04.222
    7. :BLR Ekaterina Sloeva - 4:04.685
  10. Provisional quota for the men's 500m after 7/8 races (my calculation, might have mistakes):

    :BLR x1

    :CAN x2

    :CHN x2

    :EST x1

    :GBR x1

    :GER x2

    :ITA x2

    :JPN x3

    :KAZ x1

    :KOR x2

    :NED x3

    :NOR x2

    :POL x3

    :ROC x3

    :USA x2

Reserve list in order: :ESP :NOR :CAN :CHN :GER :KAZ :KAZ :BLR

:ESP Nil Llop got disqualified in race 7 unfortunately, but one chance left to qualify.

Nearly all of the top Dutch skaters have gone home to prepare for the OQT around Christmas, so they'll skip Calgary. This is done under the assumption the maximum number of quota are already certain, with the men's mass start (although Jorrit Bergsma went home as well) and the women's 3k as exceptions.

Very risky, I have a feeling we’ll lose some quotas because of this decision.
