Adrian Hoesch seems to be a German and was representing Germany - wouldn't be surprised if he was a rich guy buying his way into the Olympics after googling his name.

 

He is in deed a German. Together with Julian Autenrieth he won a Bronze at 2013 youth European Championships in the 470er class. Ironically, the Oceania quota place of ASA would have been reallocated to Germany (16th place at WCh in 2019).

There are but 5 serious Winter Olympic nations outside Europe -USA ,Canada, Japan , China and Sth Korea ( and the last 2 are medal collecting obsessives who pour millions into events which wouldn't exist in their countries but for their Olympic inclusion )

 

That's it 

Sure others compete and may win the very occasional medal - usually in a non classic  winter event which is based on a summer event being held  on snow ( eg snowboarding is derived from skateboarding which is derived from surfing )

Snowboarding is a “classical” winter sport though. It was an Olympic sport years before the other (which are both debuting in Tokyo (so I could argue they owe Snowboarding some thanks)).

Also, there’s nothing wrong with the Winter Olympics. The only reason they’re even held separate from the Summer Olympics is because of climate. Those sports would be in the Olympics either way. It’s not really anyone’s fault that more NOCs don’t win medals. We’ve seen more and more countries competing in the winter sports recently, so clearly there’s a taste for winter sport.

Exotic nations are at issue though. Whole bunch of nations are competing, seemingly, just so the IOC can call it a global event. These nations tend to be represented by athletes who: a) Have very questionable (if any) connection with the nation they represent, b) Usually don't give a damn about developing the sport in their new nation, what results in their nation disappearing as soon as they retire from sport.

To make the Winter Olympics a more global event it'll likely have to become a "Winter & Indoor Olympics."

 

For anything held inside, the weather outside doesn't matter. Handball is a good example, their World Championships are in December/January so it isn't a huge stretch to have the Olympics in February. It'll also help balance the two Olympics.

Put cross country athletics in Winter Olympic and the problem is solved.

I'm actually fine with what the Winter Olympics are. I just don't like its fake globality label. They will never be truly global - IOC should accept it. Hell, with climate change, it's bound to become even more exclusive.

 

And, this whole indoor idea just doesn't work for me. It's not like you need to be out in the Sun for your activity to be called a summer sport. It doesn't really matter when handball gets played, you still need to recreate summer conditions indoors for the competition to be held. For the same reason figure skating is a Winter sport rather than an indoor one.
