The registration deadline for the last chance qualifier was today, so I assume no more names will be added to this list

https://www.sportdata.org/wkf/set-online/veranstaltung_info_main.php?active_menu=calendar&vernr=386&ver_info_action=catnennlist#a_eventheadend

something like 70 athletes for men's kumite events and something like 60 for women's events. both Kata events have less than 50.

this tournament will have a unique format. top 4 will face each other once again in a round robin to determine the 3 qualified athletes. so going to the final doesn't guarantee you an Olympic quota.

Expand

let's see if I got it. There will be brackets? and how will they by seeded? by ranking?

Then the semifinalists will make a round robin?

it will be like any other Karate event, direct elimination with repechage and top 4 in the ranking will be seeded (to not face each other early)

but there will be no final and all 4 medalists (finalists + repechage winners) will compete again in a round robin competition. (and those who faced earlier have to fight again)

Wow Panetsidou must've lost weight to compete in this category! Good for her because it would've been a shame if she didn't get a chance to make it to Tokyo as obviously Chatziliadou would've been preferred over her.

  • 3 weeks later...

I believe WKF will announce the Continental quotas tomorrow but I double checked everything, I think these guys are going to qualify but this is not official until WKF confirms it

Men

Kata: :MAR Adnane El Hakimi

67: :LAT Kalvis Kalnins

75: :AUS Yahiro Tsuneari & :EGY Abdalla Abdelaziz

+75: :USA Brian Irr & :KAZ Daniyar Yuldashev

Women

Kata: :NZL Alexandrea Anacan & :DOM Maria Dimitrova

55: :EGY Radwa Sayed & :AUT Bettina Plank

61: :PER Alexandra Grande & :IRI Rozita Alipour

+61: None

==================

so we have 4 spots available for Tripartite invitation. but athletes have to be inside top 50 in the World Ranking.

Eligible for women's +61kg:  (2 quotas available)

:MNE Marina Rakovic

Eligible for men's kata:

:KUW Sayed Mohammed Al-Mosawi

Eligible for men's 67kg:

:MKD Emil Pavlov

:MNE Nenad Dulovic

:KUW Abdullah Shaaban

:ALB Orges Arifi

==================

per rules if they can't allocate wild cards

  Quote

the quota will be reallocated to the highest ranked athlete in the applicable category from an NOC not already represented as per Olympic Standing of 24 May 2021.

Expand

I assume that means they will award those quotas to NOCs without a single quota in Karate. because it doesn't say "not already represented in that category"

since there are 2 wild cards available in women's +61kg and only one athlete is eligible to take that. I think that means one will be reallocated at least.

the following athletes are best ranked in those categories from NOCs with zero quotas in Karate

Women's +61kg:

:GRE Eleni Chatziliadou

:SVK Miroslava Kopunova

* Chatziliadou should qualify anyway. Kopunova goes only if Montenegro doesn't get that Wild Card.

Men's kata:

:KUW Sayed Mohammed Al-Mosawi

* This Kuwaiti guy is the next best athlete (from an NOCs already represented) and he is also the only athlete here eligible for the Wild Card. I beleive one way or another he will take that spot.

Men's 67kg:

:CHI Camilo Velozo

* highly unlikely because 4 athletes are eligible for the Wild Card

That is good news for our Greek friend @Makedonas. Hopefully WKF will confirm it tomorrow.

Thank you. I'm very glad to hear that! I saw a Greek sports site talking about her possibly getting a wildcard but thought maybe it was an error on their part.

She was so unlucky with injuries during the past two years (she was almost certain to qualify by ranking before getting injured), and her boyfriend is our best boxer who was one win away from qualifying for Tokyo, then covid hit and he had to wait 15 months for the qualifying tournament to resume, and by then he was in hospital getting surgery and had to withdraw. So it would be really nice if one of them can make it!

Looks like she hasn't heard anything from WKF

Expand

no surprise, they have to allocate the Wild Cards first. WKF still didn't even announce the Continental quotas yet, I was expecting that today though.

the deadline is 16 June. so two more days left. but keep in mind reallocated quotas are never a sure thing. I'm not even 100% sure about the Continental quotas I posted earlier. let alone reallocated Tripartite Committee quotas.

but I read the rules so many times and explained everything in details, I still think she will get the quota.

that part was interesting in his instagram, I like to see her reaction when/if she hears the news. after reading that post I really hope she does.

Call me crazy I still believe that God can’t leave it like this after all this I have been through.

    • writing here because it's going to heavily impact on the Olympics, but it's part of a way bigger blow for many sports in Italy    earlier Today, the Italian idiots running the government did change the rules about getting the Italian citizenship because of the heritage (ius sanguinis) now, only foreigners with at least 1 parent or grandfather/grandmother born in Italy will be able to ask for our citizenship now all those people with the Italian heritage coming from men/women further down the family tree won't get it because of that (of course they will still be able to earn it following the remaining pathways, like marriage or living here for at least 5 consecutive years -if coming from EU Nations, 10 if coming from outside EU)   this is basically the end of any chance to have an Italian competitive team in all those team sports where there are not enough athletes practicing within our Country like ice hockey, field hockey, baseball, cricket, lacrosse, flag football and even rugby (just to name the olympic sports), all disciplines where we always relied on major help from foreign born Italians   but this soon will affect also a few individual sports, when the consequences of the pandemic stoppage will come into effect (soon)   for this thread's purpose, it' obvious that now we won't have any chance to have a decent hockey team at the 2026 Home Olympics; we are forced to stay with the current shameful B division bunch of drunk players that can't even skate
    • NOC's qualified for the free dance (and eligible for earn Olympic quotas):    x3  x3  x2  x2  x2  x2   20 teams qualified but only 19 will earn quotas.
    • Maybe now the sport news and people here can do a little less celebration the next time a russian figure skater has their own disaster.Karma is a thing in sports too apparently, just had to get a bite in that a russian representing georgian had a disaster that opened the door for one of our own to the olympics. And now our main pair fall, whoops.
    • it took two Olympics (and 4 years) for UWW to finally realize there is a big big flaw in their current rules (we have this since early 2021)   in Greco-Roman, in high level specially in heavier weights it's just hard to score. in this case sometimes the match ends up 1-1. (1 pt for passivity caution for each) under current rules lots of wrestlers decide to be intentionally passive in first 2 minutes to receive the first caution. this created lots of ugly scenes in Olympics. for example  Yasmani Acosta won an Olympic silver in Paris without doing a thing! he was passive in his 3 pre-final matches and won all of them 1-1    UWW will test a new rule at the European Championship next week, only in case of 1-1 and only in Greco-Roman whoever gets the first point wins. I believe this will become an official rule soon, they should make this change long time ago but yet late is better than never   https://uww.org/article/uww-test-new-greco-rule-2025-european-championships
    • are my favorites for the time being.    could definitely grow on me as well. There's very few songs I'd count out before I get the chance to see them during the live shows.     P.S. "Baller"  would play at a trendy shop in LA, and I would enjoy it
    • Yes, correct. Anyway still not officially confirmed by our NOC though
    • They failed to qualify for the free dance by *0.01* points.
    • Massive upset by :LTU Ambruleviciud/Reed scoring 20 points less than usual after a fall and failing to qualify to Olympics. Massive blow and shock as they were basically almost guaranteed top10
    • 64.83m from 16 YEAR OLD Ziyi Yan  for a new world junior javelin record.....which she already owned.
    • Technically, we have a few more confirmed quotas: Alpine Skiing - 2 Biathlon - 4 Cross-Country Skiing - 3
