14.38.34 (3.51.14 at 400m, 7.46.39 at 800m and 11.42.69 at 1200m the main splits)...you can find all the daily recaps of the Italian Nationals in the 2019 general swimming thread (where @intoronto is also posting the results of the Canadian trials)...;)

If anyone wants to follow the Canadian trials, SwimSwam has good live recaps every night.

However this wouldn’t be a good thread for it since, if it’s anything like the last three times, Swimming Canada requires athletes to meet the FINA standard at the Olympic Trials. Prior times only matter if you get added for a relay or you get some sort of exemption (very rare).

Edit: this has apparently changed, though it will be at the discretion of Swimming Canada whether or not to nominate athletes who haven’t achieved the A stamdard during Olympic trials. Not sure how likely they are to so it in practice.

Here is an upload on what I was able to follow in terms of Olympic Qualification. As usual, this is pure theory and just for fun:

- a total of 182 quotas have already been achieved, considering 1 quota per athlete. If we look for multiple quotas, this number reaches 255.

- among the athletes with multiple quotas, Hosszu :HUN has 4, Quadarella, Detti :ITA Flickinger :USA  Sjostrom :SWE 3. Many have 2 (this data include partial data coming from Russian and Australian Championships that are currently in progress)

- in terms of quotas earned per nation, the current podium us :CHN:JPN:ITA with 27, 25 and 23 quotas respectively. However, :AUS and especially :RUS are increasingly sharply with good results in their championships, and :USA will host from today to sunday another meet of TYR series, meaning that new quotas will be likely to be achieved;

- in terms of absolute number of standards reached, that is considering multiple quotas per athlete, the podium standings is exactly the same, with :CHN peaking it with 36 quotas, followed by 34 for :JPN and 31 for :ITA

- a total of 29 nations have already obtained at least 1 quota by achieving 1 minimum A standard. Among them, it is worth underlining the presence of :LIE in women's 1500m and :GUA in women's 100m fly;

- among men's events, breastroke appears as the one in which it is easier to achieve an A standard, with both events counting 16 athletes qualified each;

- Looking at women's events, instead, at the moment the most crowded event appears to be women's 1500m free, with 17 athletes qualified (and, surprisingly, without any :USA swimmer already qualified).

- looking at B standards achieved, a special mention goes to :LUX which reached 2 B standards in 200m free and 200m medley (both in men's events) and :IND (200m fly in men's event);

- as a personal feeling, I think other quotas could have been earned at Kazakistan national championships but I was not able to find any result. I also missed last day in Netanya Cup in Israel (or, better, I really cannot understand their language).

    • Kristian Gkolomeev (swimming)   He specialised in the men's 50 freestyle, was 5th in both Tokyo and Paris, won a world silver in 2019 and many European medals including gold last year.   He went to the Olympics 4 times. He is still only 31 years old but hinted at Paris being the end for him so I guess it should not be surprising, though he is still in his top form and given how close he was to winning an Olympic medal the last two times, I was hoping he would try again in 2028...
    • People are judging her but the truth is she has no points to defend after Wimbledon. She only played the Olympics where she lost in the third round and got injured, then withdrew from the North American swing (including two 1000s) except she tried to play the US Open and retired in her first round match, then missed the rest of the season (another two 1000s plus Guadalajara which was her best tournament regardless of it being the WTA Finals, 1000, or 500 as it is now).   She could've extended her injury break to be exactly 6 months as many players do to get a protected ranking, but she came back and risked missing big tournaments and having to play qualifying possibly. If anything she should be applauded for that.   It looks like she'll have to play qualifying in Rome and possibly Wimbledon for example, which she wouldn't have had to do if she abused the protected ranking system as many others do.   EDIT-Also she was still in the top 10 during both the Olympics and the US Open, so people writing that her ranking was already dropping are incorrect!
    • Again  france they voted this law : if you fart into the bus or train you will pay 50€ , they even created Police detectors of farts
    • Different what the UK got on TNT where Steve Cram (The voice of Athletics on the BBC for the last 25 years) took part in the praising of the Atmosphere (Which sounded ridiculous as it wasn’t very good).   Some of the races were ok but it was so flat. The hurdles are a big flaw because 1 hurdle and 1 flat race is not a mixing of different categories and skills in the way the other events can be. 3000 and 5000m  be too similar   as well I think.    I don’t get why they started in Kingston. Anyone could tell it would struggle for attendance there more than in the USA.    Also I’m surprised Johnson invited Naser with her ban.

    • Ah yeah, Dutch commentator's closing words: "Let's hope the few people who were on the grandstands enjoyed it and will bring some friends tomorrow"
    • Same here, Eurosport/HBO had one of the two usual Dutch athletics commentators (who is also an athlete manager I believe, so someone who knows what he's talking about luckily ).
    • Just finished watching. Let's see if they manage to improve the format for next time, this was arguably the biggest flop I've seen in terms of athletics events....I don't mean the races themselves, the few events that were there were fine, but man this was mostly a waiting game. Glad HBO has it here, so it was easy to skip through the many, many, many minutes of nothing. This was sort of like an undressed Diamond League evening.   If they do this within one hour instead of two and also create a Grand Slam Field, who knows, it may become more interesting.
    • Not so big difference to the Diamond league, except DL has the field events to show during the breaks between races but DL also give the running to much tv time when if they at least have the field events. Maybe DL even more can focus on the field events now that GST has the running. also what is the point of putting together for example 400m and 400 hurdles in the same category🤔
    • I agree, it was a decent event, but nothing more than that.
