Can an athlete that qualifies or is named to a slalom boat, compete in sprint?

The qualification document specifies "sprint" and "slalom" athletes in their respective documents so I'm leaning no.

Are there athletes which compete in both disciplines (like we see in cycling)? ICF would be more receptive to the idea if athletes exist rather than trying to Trojan horse someone into the other discipline.

Only thing I can think of is the 2010 or was it 2014 (or both) that had sprint and slalom together?

Not.

These are two completely different sports under one federation. But it is not possible to qualify in one and start in the other. I would compare it to Rhythimc and Artisticss gymnastics, it is difficult to imagine an athlete specializing in parallel bars who would be able to compete as well with a ball or ribbon.

even in canoe slalom itself, it is rare to see athletes compete in both men's disciplines. For women, on the other hand, it is still a common thing, to see girls doing both events, but only because the women's C1 category is still just a ridiculous competition, too weak and not develpoed yet. But as it develops, there will be fewer and fewer girls able to keep up in both disciplines.

Yeah the YOG famous Obstacle Canoeing.

It had nothing to do with slalom. it is a specially created and invented sport discipline on flat water with some easy gates, buoys and starting ramp. So it was neither about the speed and explosiveness of the canoe sprinters, nor about the strength, tactical thinking and stamina of the slalom specialists.

Just a very poorly failed attempt to merge two different sports into one to catch the attention of young public, with sprinters having a greater advantage as it took place on flat water. Interestingly, slalom specialists were more successful, due to the fact that sprinters probably do not know how to turn boats and go through upstream gates, even on flat water.

  • 5 weeks later...

ICF updated the quota allocation. Very informative about America and Oceania and surprisingly CHN got a quota from NZL originally.

    • North American rugby quotas ( and qualified automatically)    M: and W: and
    • I remember Caroline Golubitsky. She competed with Vezzali for a while but not for long. Rita Konig, whom Vezzali defeated in the final of the Olympic Games in 2000, was more famous, as well as Sabine Bau and Anja Mueller. From what I remember, the Germans competed fiercely with us at some point, but they almost always lost.
    • Shemyakina won a bronze medal in 2014 Worlds and was one of our leader but leave the squad due to pregnancy (she has 2 daughters if I'm not mistaking, so she chose family instead of sport). And speaking of foil we have back in the day Sergiy Golubitskyi, who was Olympic silver medalist and won some medals in other competitions and coached his wife Caroline Golubitskyi - one of the German foil specialists. Even in women's foil we had medal in Women's foil at the European championship - it was Olha Leleiko, our current national coach. So no, we are pretty good fencing country, and depending on generations of our athletes some events are more "profitable" for us and some don't.
    • Shemyakina that was a very strange story. She unexpectedly won the games but before and after she literally achieved nothing. After that success in 2012 she also completely disappeared. It's only in epee that such strange situations. That's why I've always preferred foil and sabre, because the top was more stable there, although that's changing now. The competition has grown a lot all over the world.
