This is the best thing imo and maybe I'll watch boxing if they show scores live which I'm sure they will. There is always a chance that even if a boxer dominates first 2 rounds, and establishes 6-7 points lead, the opponent can come back and win in 3rd round. Not sure if literally only blows counting is such a good thing (so someone with 50 relatively light blows would beat someone with 25 really hard blows, even if the latter would be the more dominant one because of his heavy hitting). . Dragon 1,844 Posted October 30, 2019 #63 Share Posted October 30, 2019 The 2016 system was based on 9 decisions, 3 by each judge. If only 2 of those 9 were totally stupid then the result could be affected. With the new system they could be making 60 decisions every round. Far harder to make really bad decisions. I assume the discussions are whether the scores are showed "immediately" as the article indicates or at the end of each round.
Dunadan 1,103 Posted October 30, 2019 #65 Share Posted October 30, 2019 If Ii remember correctly in 2012 they were using this system with scores only shown at the end of each round (unlike 2008 and earlier when live scores were shown) and it wasn't good at all, with a lot of controversies. phelps 7,670 Posted October 30, 2019 #66 Share Posted October 30, 2019 (edited) (until) Seoul 1988: the good old 5 judges, scoring bouts "like the pros"...the worst Olympic Boxing scandal ever... London 2012...the devilish scoring machines...the second worst Olympic Boxing scandal ever... Rio 2016...the latest scoring system (3 judges, scoring the bout on a 10-pt scale, like the pros)...just another oscenity... you can change the scoring system as many times as you want, but this is not the problem of boxing (and especially Olympic Boxing)... the real problem are the men in charge, who are always at least biased, when often not truly corrupted... until there is a single man coming from the old establishment, there's no way we're going to have a clean boxing tournament at the Olympics... nitinsanker 202 Posted October 31, 2019 #67 Share Posted October 31, 2019 IMHO 1) currently the scoring system is the most opaque system where there is absolutely no sense why the bout is given to the BLUE Or RED corner.... . so any change is good 2) The judges have absolute power to score and there is no check pts ...... so showing the scores live with a certain number of referrals would help....... Any corruption would show up easily 3) The problem with the pt based scoring system..... Boxers started adopting a high shell guard and boxers would just crouch and occasionally poke at others......bouts started resembling two turtles ? hitting each other... So +es and -es........ But far more positives than negatives strength does not come from physical capacity but from an indomitable will. - Gandhi
heywoodu 15,135 Posted October 31, 2019 #68 Share Posted October 31, 2019 Oh well, if you don't agree with the score you can always just pay, protest and 'win' anyway .

ATHENS 1896 15 Posted November 13, 2019 #70 Share Posted November 13, 2019 What are the technical and competition rules to be used in the qualification events and in the Olympic Games? In essence, the AIBA competition rules will be respected. Any changes and/or adaptation to these rules will be limited to those without a direct impact on the athletes’ preparation and will be communicated by 14 November 2019. source: https://boxing.athlete365.org/faq/ One more day!
