it's finish ?

One more weekend of tournaments for men, two for women.

But this weekend is the men's US Open and next week is the women's US PGA championships.

So lots of ranking points available

Plus, these are the rankings. There will be withdrawals. No way all these golfers take part in Olympics.

I have real problems with the Olympic golf qualification business if a golfer ranked # 286 qualifies ( ie the Chinese guy ranked #60 on the Olympic list )

Now I realise that THEY want a certain number of countries represented but you are getting people who can't get into even a B or C grade tournament .

It might be nice to have say 35 countries represented rather than 21  but this just makes the Olympic tournament even more of a giggle event in the eyes of golf fans

How about this ( good ideas have to start somewhere ) :

the no of countries represented must be at least the greater no of

(1) all the countries which have  a golfer in the top ranked 100

                                     OR

(2) 10% of all Olympic countries ( currently that's 21 countries )

Host country must have at least one competitor

Maximum of 4 per country

This system would allow more than 2 golfers from the serious golf countries  ( apart from the US of course  who will probably always qualify four )

I think of these rather limited golfers who just qualify as being the Summer equivalent of Prince Albert of Monaco whom I remember sitting comfortably in the bobsleigh while his teammates and subjects pushed the darned  thing to get it moving

Can india qualify two golfers in men currently no one in top 60 ???

Lahri 63

Mane 64

If we have the wave of withdrawals that some people in here think (I'm certainly not so sure), they could have a shot.

"the Summer equivalent of Prince Albert of Monaco"? Seriously?

Johannessen may very well be on the way to a European Tour Card, Campos is on the PGA Tour, Yuan (at the moment) on the way to a PGA Tour card, Gavin Green is on the European Tour and Zanotti the same. That's the bottom five at the moment all on (or with chances of reaching) the top 2 tours.

The main issue is that the golf schedule is already packed and the Olympics haven't got the prestige (yet). Plenty of major golfers still feel strongly about participating and some of those who withdrew 5 years ago have made it clear that they regret doing so.

The universality is a major part of the Olympics and one of few things that still show some of the spirit of the first Olympic Games. Making a selection where even decent golfing nations like Denmark and Germany would struggle to qualify (in the men's tournament) would make things so unolympic that even I as a supporter of Olympic golf would say that it should be left out!

No problem with the limits on countries and think the ranking is fine for bringing in other non-traditional countries

Personally, I'd try for 64 person fields with a straight knock out match play tournament (seeded)

    • How wonderful!   I met the national rowing (and beach rowing) coach of EST/LTU/LAT on the way to ice hockey one day, who's Canadian by the way. I also flew home on the same flight as JC Schoonmaker's mom and friends, so we chatted for a bit.
    • Yea I only used transit besides this Uber / bus to the airport and back. All the venues were at the end of the line, so it allowed you to speak with other fans/volunteers etc. I even met Corrine Stoddard's mom after the first session of short track on the way back, and told her to remember our conversation if she won a medal later in the Olympics. We know how that ended up...
    • I used public transit the entire time I was in Milan.   My first day was a doozy, because I had to two flights to reach Malpensa, and then the train into town was delayed, and then I got confused a station and boarded a tram instead of the metro, proceeded to travel in the wrong direction, got off, walked back to the station, found the metro, got off a station early, walked around a kilometer to my hotel, and checked in.   My colleagues mostly took cabs upon arrival, but I deduced to take the frugal approach. That said, I was a true public transit professional by the time I left Milan.   I actually enjoyed my rides to and from venues, because I'd just chat up fans and volunteers from different countries. It helped me learn more about the city too.
    • It's the olympics, sleep is for the weak!    The first day i got there i was on a 12 hour flight from l.a to rome (flight that left mid day), lay over, another flight to milan, uber to hotel, then right away to speed skating (1500m men), then after uber to hockey venue for women's gold final, then after the celebrations uber to the hotel, i ended up being awake about 36 hours that day, the next morning i thought to go sightseeing in the center of milan, but ended up sleeping until like 2pm..... and had speed skating/short track that night
    • I tried to get onto the metro multiple times and gave up    I had just arrived the day of from Bangkok (12 hr flight) and was just exhausted and wanted to sleep
    • Plus, you missed out on a potential metro ride with me, which is quite priceless in my opinion
    • My hotel was very close to Rho so was easy to get there, but it was so far from the hockey venue that after the women's gold medal match it was so expensive to get back, and also the next day after the usa slovakia semis it took forever, the asshole driver took the city and not the freeway
    • Uber cost me $224 CAD to get back to the hotel from the OC. It basically prevented me from buying tickets to a speed skating session
    • Romania's national team coach, Mircea Lucescu, has died half an hour ago He was in hospital since March 30th, just before the friendly match against Slovakia. Unbelievable how the life can have such turns...in March 26th he was in Istanbul playing the WC qualifying play-off vs Turkiye and now he died.    Thank you very much for every moments you bring us in your huge career (he's on 3rd place in a most trophies won in career, after Ferguson and Guardiola) and may your soul rest in peace, Mr. Lucescu.
