Men's épée hurts, but we ended up as the 4th best European nation behind the "Big 3" of :ITA  :RUS  :FRA after a really hard qualification process in the team events, so I can't really complain. I think we have a chance to get one more quota in women's épée, we will have to decide who to send. Szász sadly doesn't seem to be back to her old Olympic winning form, so it might be best to send Kun or Muhari.

looking at the qualification table right now, JPN have "only" 1 team qualified for the Home Games, but they also have 1 man/woman already qualified as individual in all the remaining 5 weapons, which means that they could potentially raise their participation to 5 full teams (they have 8 wild cards to manage, if I remember correctly) by adding 2 athletes in 4 different disciplines...

so, I guess that we would eventually have 5 weapons with a 9-team draw at the Olympics (and only 1 with the basic 8-team start list)...

my pick is that Men's Team Sabre will be the only 8-team tournament...

Nations that are fighting at the Zonal qualifiers in men's épée and have at least one fencer in the Top100 on the world ranking:

Europe: :POL  :ISR  :ESP  :FIN  :AUT  :CZE  :DEN  :EST  :GER  :LUX  :ROU  :BEL

Asia: :VIE  :HKG  :KUW  :UZB

America: :CUB  :ARG  :COL  :CHI  :PER  :CAN

Africa: :EGY  :MRI  :SEN

Hi,

stupid question but are only fencers in the Top100 eligible for the Zonal qualifiers?
And will there only be 1 fencer per nation, or are multiple participants from one country allowed?

No, all fencers are eligible whose nation hasn't qualified so far, I just wanted the list those who are more likely to qualify based on their world ranking.

And as far as I know the countries can only send one fencer per event to the Zonal qualifier.

is a team 3 quotas?

Yes. The 4th team member is a substitute, I think we usually don't count them for the athlete quotas.

    • That was known from the start for  and will be planned for.   Sadly just the reality of sports in North America. Canada and the US are both huge, a flight from Vancouver to Halifax or from Seattle to Miami is north of five hours. Every sports league in North America has to deal with this kind of travel logistics on the regular, so none of this will seem particularly unusual to a North American player.
    • That’s not a long distance, it’s barely a 2h flight and there is no difference in timezone. Easily doable for fans as well.
