Equestrian Qualification to Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympic Games

Recommended Posts

Well, things are not looking bright for Norwegian dressage.

Antonia Jacobsen & Danny have one MER result from last year, however Danny has since been retired. This leaves them with nothing. Norwegian Horse Festival is scheduled for next week however, so it will be interesting to see if someone can obtain 66% MER.

Something that I forgot to share here... FEI has decided to shorten the Olympic cross-country course to just 8 minutes.

It will not be the shortest Olympic course ever (they already did the same in Hong Kong), but nevertheless it's disappointing... The course will now be easier for sure, but optimum time should be harder to attain, as it was in 2008 when nobody came within 20 seconds of it. It's because when they shorten the course, they mostly remove galloping sections rather than jumps.

This also means we may see some horses that tend to struggle with stamina (Kim Severson's Cooley Cross Border definitely comes to mind...).

Damn, that’s less fun for those of us that will be on course :(

And to follow up on this - things are still not looking good.

Farbrot & Red Rebel have talent, but no piaffe/passage. Others are essentially amateurs anyway. I guess the last Norwegian hope could be Germany-based professional Isabel Freese, but only if free Olympic quota attracts her attention. :mumble:

Meanwhile...

Based on this, we can assume that FEI has informed nations of their individual quota places this week. We shall soon know if there are any reallocations.

*BREAKING NEWS*

:QAT Qatar got disqualified from the Group F qualification event, so :MAR Morocco is now qualified...

:SRI Mathilda Karlsson lost a bunch of points from Villeneuve-Loubet. Her quota now goes to :HKG Hong Kong, while Sri Lanka is only the second reserve...

Following this, we effectivelly lose two participating nations. It's rather unfortunate, even though Morocco having a jumping team is a nice novelty.

FEI confirmed the individual qualifiers here.

Some of these reserve lists make no sense whatsoever though. It's as if they were made using random pick generator or something.

They completely left out :ITA Italy in dressage (?). :MAS Malaysia and :GRE Greece are for some very weird reason listed as 1st and 2nd reserves for the overall Olympic rankings in dressage. :KAZ Kazakhstan and :LTU Lithuania are magic reserves for eventing's Group C (if it stays like that, they will be really hoping for Russian blanket ban :p).

    • I would prefer the 12 teams tournament in both genders, and give the almost 80/90 quotas to a lot of sports. For example, 32 could go to 4 more teams in each gender in basket 3x3. Then, the 12 team qualification i will do it like this:   Host quota gold medal of the previous olympic (-1 reduction to the confederation of the gold medal team) 3 to europe 1 oceania 2 south america 1 north america and caribe 1 africa 1 asia 1 playoff africa-asia 1 playoff of loser of africa-asia, 4th europe, 3th southamerica and 2nd north and caribe   and for the women probably the same changing south and north america quotas

    • 16 women's teams, because 12 is a shitty number for a tournament - both because the forced continental representation will lead to it being a relatively weak tournament and because you can not make a decent tournament with 12 teams, you'll be forced to have the super awful 'best third placed teams' nonsense.   0 men's teams   Instead of a total of 28, we go to a total of 16 teams. We gain 12 x whatever number of players are in a men's team for sports where the Olympics are important, we have a women's tournament with a decent format and we get rid of having junior championships at the Olympics, win-win-win
