So I just got an email from World Athletics in response to my question if unqualified athletes impact the 56 athlete quota in the men’s 100m and it’s as I suspected, they don’t impact the quota for that event:

Not sure what the case is for the other events.

so there will be 56 qualified via the ranking and the minimums + the tripartites?

Yes according to World Athletics that is the case for the men’s 100m. I do not know if that is the case for any other event.

I would imagine some of those qualified by ranking-only in the men’s 100m will be entered in the preliminary round with the universality qualified athletes before we move to Round 1 proper with 56 athletes.

Well, that's pretty weird. Singling out one event like this.

I guess preliminary stages will then have some World Ranking athletes combined with universality athletes? Talk about no-contest.

Yes that’s how it worked in the previous world championships I believe where B standard athletes were in the prelim round along with the universality athletes.

It would be interesting to know if it is only for the men’s 100m or if it is the case through all events that universality places don’t affect the quota. I am pretty sure it is only the men’s 100m this applies to as even the women’s 100m doesn’t have a prelim round and therefore probably has a fixed number of 56 quotas.

I will email them back after work to see if I can get more clarification :d

But the again, those B standard athletes were always a minority and still some pure universality athletes progressed?

If 56 athletes are to advance to the first round, then universality athletes stand no chance barring any injuries or false starts. This mismatch will look pretty bad on screen.

    • Yea I only used transit besides this Uber / bus to the airport and back. All the venues were at the end of the line, so it allowed you to speak with other fans/volunteers etc. I even met Corrine Stoddard's mom after the first session of short track on the way back, and told her to remember our conversation if she won a medal later in the Olympics. We know how that ended up...
    • I used public transit the entire time I was in Milan.   My first day was a doozy, because I had to two flights to reach Malpensa, and then the train into town was delayed, and then I got confused a station and boarded a tram instead of the metro, proceeded to travel in the wrong direction, got off, walked back to the station, found the metro, got off a station early, walked around a kilometer to my hotel, and checked in.   My colleagues mostly took cabs upon arrival, but I deduced to take the frugal approach. That said, I was a true public transit professional by the time I left Milan.   I actually enjoyed my rides to and from venues, because I'd just chat up fans and volunteers from different countries. It helped me learn more about the city too.
    • It's the olympics, sleep is for the weak!    The first day i got there i was on a 12 hour flight from l.a to rome (flight that left mid day), lay over, another flight to milan, uber to hotel, then right away to speed skating (1500m men), then after uber to hockey venue for women's gold final, then after the celebrations uber to the hotel, i ended up being awake about 36 hours that day, the next morning i thought to go sightseeing in the center of milan, but ended up sleeping until like 2pm..... and had speed skating/short track that night
    • I tried to get onto the metro multiple times and gave up    I had just arrived the day of from Bangkok (12 hr flight) and was just exhausted and wanted to sleep
    • Plus, you missed out on a potential metro ride with me, which is quite priceless in my opinion
    • My hotel was very close to Rho so was easy to get there, but it was so far from the hockey venue that after the women's gold medal match it was so expensive to get back, and also the next day after the usa slovakia semis it took forever, the asshole driver took the city and not the freeway
    • Uber cost me $224 CAD to get back to the hotel from the OC. It basically prevented me from buying tickets to a speed skating session
    • Romania's national team coach, Mircea Lucescu, has died half an hour ago He was in hospital since March 30th, just before the friendly match against Slovakia. Unbelievable how the life can have such turns...in March 26th he was in Istanbul playing the WC qualifying play-off vs Turkiye and now he died.    Thank you very much for every moments you bring us in your huge career (he's on 3rd place in a most trophies won in career, after Ferguson and Guardiola) and may your soul rest in peace, Mr. Lucescu.
