Road Cycling at the Summer Olympic Games 2020

And one other thing, while Van Vleuten was chasing solo (50-30 km), the gap to Kiesenhofer was barely narrowing. It narrowed for like 30 seconds during all that time.

Before her fall? There is a video evidence of her asking the cameraman for time gaps.

Maybe I understood wrong during her interview (I was also watching other things), or she meant information about the composition of the group or something :p

It's possible that she assumed the 5 minutes was to Plichta and Shapira and when they were caught, they thought they had everyone.

It's funny, Polish ES crew with 100 km left said the women can't let a breakaway reach 10 mins. :AUT wins gold in Summer Games? That must be a huge upset no matter if Kiesenhofer is a complete nobody.

Polish media quoted Anna vd Breggen who apparently said she doesn't even know who Kiesenhofer is

That's absolutely disaster for organisators. There should be some motocycling showing the right times and groups or at least at the first passing the finish line.

Neah, it's alright. Modern cyclists are so used to radio-controlled races it's always welcome there's one race where you have to do it on your own. Old school rules! It's the same with lack of pacemakers in athletics.

Great start for Plichta and Lach, Niewiadoma even has a problem to get place in Top8.... 2 days and we do not have medal and event one points from being in Top8... My prediction was 5-6 medals, but I expected more good starts from our athletes. I am happy for Austria. Italian and girls from Netherlands save energy, it was wise.

Did you know that we have 4 boats in rowing finals and basically nobody who could have REAL medal chance didnt start yet? Be patient, please.

First austrian gold at summer olympics since 2004 apparently.

First Austrian gold medal in cycling since 1896 as I'm sure Grassmarket will remember vividly. Of course that was a 12 hour race rather than a four hour sprint like today's road race.

Time for the women's time trial. Interestingly, Kiesenhofer had been preparing for a while for this time trial (and not at all the road race), but didn't know Austria had a road race quota....and not a time trial one, so she did the road race :p

Didn't go bad at all.

    • Bulgarian team is out for the upcoming ECH. There are some good news in that after a year of scandals, some of the biggest names are once again included in the National team and will participate. The issues have not been cleared by any means, but both sides said they have made compromises for now, so that the best wrestlers compete.   @MHSN   By the way, wasn't there some UWW rule about the number of foreigners you had to field per style? As far as i see, we are using almost all of our Russians  Guess this rule was set for any new naturalisations and all previous ones are disregarded, which practically makes this change useless for 6-7 years down the road.   Men's Freestyle:   57 kg - Ivailo Tisov 61 kg -  Erdal Galip  65 kg - Shamil Mamedov (  ) 70 kg - Mikyay Naim 74 kg - Mihail Georgiev   79 kg - Aykan Seid 86 kg - Engin Ismail  92 kg - Ahmed Bataev (  ) 97 kg - Akhmed Magamaev (  ) 125 kg - Alen Khubulov (  )   Men's Greco-Roman:   55 kg - Stefan Grigorov 60 kg - Borislav Kirilov 63 kg - Nikolay Vichev 67 kg - Abu-Muslim Amaev (  ) 72 kg - Dimitar Georgiev   77 kg - Stoyan Kubatov 82 kg - Svetoslav Nikolov 87 kg - Semen Novikov (  ) 97 kg - Kiril Milov   Women's Freestyle:   57 kg - Olga Popova 59 kg - Viktoria Boynova 62 kg - Bilyana Dudova 68 kg - Daniela Brasnarova 76 kg - Vanesa Georgieva
    • Unfortunately, our best striker- Mathilde Fantin, was injured today. Without her we don't have much of a chance against Hungary and France Hopefully, it's nothing serious. As for Slovakia it's still a very young team. Years go by, but these girls are still so young I don't know if there's anyone over 30 there? The Slovak goalkeeper also played bad today.
    • It's hard for me to understand Russia's popularity in Bulgaria. I understand that there was propaganda during the Soviet era, but there was also propaganda in Poland, for example, and Russia isn't popular there. And in Bulgaria, immediately after World War II, the communists carried out terrible repression- a more worse than in Poland or Czechoslovakia. Considering the scale of these repressions, only Albania was worse in Europe under Hoxha. For example, Russia's popularity in Italy can be explained by the fact that these countries have never been neighbors and Russia has never done anything bad to Italy - in the sense of repression, murder, ethnic cleansing in history.
    • Yes, PP is the most pro-European party there currently is. Before Radev stepped down as President and joined the running, PP was leading the polls after the big protests last December, as they were seen as the only real alternative to the corrupt status quo.    After Radev joined, PP lost around 10-15% of the votes, as those people were never true PP voters, but more anti GERB / DPS ones, so they gladly jumped ship to Radev.    The thing which led to the downfall of PP was that they thought they could rule with a strong European policy on the budget and wanted to reform many sectors, which people of course were against, because they wouldn't be able to leech off the system anymore. Plus they started ruling in the worst possible time, as it coincided with 2 major crises, the second year of Covid and the start of the Ukraine war.    There are many reasons why PP unfortunately lost support, but it is hard to explain it for non-Bulgarians.
    • The Stoevi sisters are just amazing. It's a shame their accomplishments will always be in the shadows here, just because they are in a sport without much coverage, tradition, interest.    This is their 7th European title (5 ECH + 2 European Games) which is just one shy of Carolina Marin's all time record of 8th titles in a specific event. Plus it was their 6th consecutive final with only one loss in 2024 in this streak.
