Wrestling UWW African & Oceanian Olympic Games Qualifier 2021

Recommended Posts

Hopefully more nations will join in the freestyle weights. Based on recent continental events, :SEN:GBS:GUI:CMR have their chances.

:AUS Australia's only chance is probably some men's freestyle category.

Aquino sisters not having a bad day after all. Youth Olympian Lahnee leading against the Egyptian made me happy for some time.

Maybe her younger sister can learn from her in the semis which would be harder but interestingly it's the weakest Tunisian athlethe in the squad yet it'll be the only opportunity Guam gets this tournament that close.

taking a look at the results:

50: :NGR looks safe, the 2nd quota is between :TUN and :EGY (much more chance for TUN)

53: direct semifinals: :CMR vs :ALG and :TUN vs :GUM . I think Cameroon and Tunisia are safe bets here

57: again direct semifinals: :GUI vs :ALG and :TUN vs :EGY, very good chance for Guinea and Tunisia

62: :TUN is 100% qualified, :CMR and :NGR will wrestle for the 2nd quota

68: :NGR and :TUN are in better position with 1 win. but that's still just one round. remember the 3rd place matters here in this weight because Nigeria most probably will get the World Championship quota.

76: :EGY is 99% safe with a fall win, the match between :TUN and :CIV will determine the 2nd quota.

Tunisia has a chance to qualify a full team.

    • Some notable  retirements:   Elisavet Pesiridou (athletics - 100m hurdles) - She announced her retirement on her 34th birthday. She competed in Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020. She narrowly missed Paris 2024 despite being in good form, the rest of he field seemed to get stronger and her ranking was a bit lower even though she was quite consistent. She struggled with injuries in 2025.   Fani Tzeli (taekwondo) - She was 7th in Tokyo 2020 but didn't qualify for Paris 2024. Still, she is only 24 yo and seemed to be rising up again after winning bronze at the European Championships so it is a bit surprising.   Aikaterini Divari (sailing) - She competed in Tokyo 2020 but didn't qualify for Paris 2024. Only 25 yo.   AJ Ginnis (alpine skiing) - Despite winning a silver at the World Championships he never got to compete at the Winter Olympics as he was always unfortunately injured. A shame as he is by far our best winter athlete ever. Only 31 yo, and I have a feeling he might come back in 2030 based on his last interview...

    • Let's see how hard Brazil will try not to qualify again.
    • Well.  Having gotten it a bit at a distance a few comments about my experiences   Travel: Very happy. Flying to and from was a breeze (the plane home slighty delayed). The same can be said about getting around in Milano. Getting around outside was of course slightly harder, especially with some delays back from Antholx (but i guess that's not a big surprise when a lot of people leave a place in the mountains)   Atmosphere: Very happy around the venues, but it's also very clear that it's smaller than the Summer games. People weren't following the events wherever you went. Alcohol certainly made a difference between Paris and now. Sadly did experience a few who should certainly have stopped a couple of beers earlier.    The logistics at the venues:  Very easy to see that Santagiulia is new and absolutely not a perfect venue. Seems like some kinks were fixed when I got there, but there's still stuff to work out. The food at the Milano venues were meh and there were quite some lines. Tesero was a chaos when it came to getting food, but the quality was slightly better at the skiing venues.
