How do TT team rankings work?? Does it depend on individual ranking of players?

There are two forms of team rankings - Normal and Olympic system. In both systems, top 3 players' ranks from each NOC are considered and matches between all the NOC are simulated.

Normal rankings are used for World Championships and other team tournaments because the playing system is best of 5 single matches viz : A v X, B v Y, C v Z, A v Y, B v X. Virtual matches are simulated between all NOCs, the NOC which wins a virtual match gets 2 points and the other NOC gets zero.

For example, if top 3 players of NOC1 is 52, 65, 89 and for NOC2 is 43, 78, 81 then by the playing system the results of virtual matches is given below

52 vs 43 NOC2 wins

65 vs 78 NOC1 wins

89 vs 81 NOC2 wins

52 vs 78 NOC1 wins

65 vs 43 NOC2 wins

So NOC2 wins the virtual duel 3-2 and gets 2 points and NOC1 gets 0. Similar simulations occur between all NOCs and they are ranked based on the points garnered

If one notices since China has the best 5 men's singles players, it should win all virtual matches and hence it garnered 296 points as number of NOCs is 149

Olympic rankings are used for Olympic Games only and the playing system is BC vs YZ, A vs X, C vs Z, A vs Y, B vs X ie there are 4 singles matches and one doubles match.

On a sidenote, India's ranking has been consistently been around 11th-13th because its top 2 players, Sathiyan and Achanta have been in the 30-40 rank range but the third ranked player was always above 100. The ranking leaped to 8th now because Harmeet Desai improved his ranking from 104 to 84

How is she third? In the list, she is at no 6. Even if there is one entrant per country, she will be no. 4. She will anyways be going to Tokyo and the best bet for a medal.

From the screen grab she seems 3rd as 201kg is higher than 188kg in terms of higher weight lifted.

It is because the Colombian has participated in one event in period 3. Her score is the total of 4 results. Mirabhai's score is of 3 results.

What is the qualification procedure ?

There are 3 periods of 6 months each.

First period: 1-11-2018 to 30-4-2019

Second period: 1-5-2019 to 31-10-2019

Third period: 1-11-2019 to 30-4-2020

Every lifter trying to qualify must have one result from each period. The best score of each period is combined. They also add another score which is best of the rest in the 18 month period.

The athlete must participate in a minimum of 6 competition in this qualification period. They should have competed in gold level event and another gold or silver level event. ( The events are categorized as Gold, Silver and Bronze).

The athlete must have participated in atleast two events in Olympic categories.

Furthermore, top 8 athletes earn a quota place for every weight category. One country can have only one quota in one weight category. The next 5 quotas go to the lifters from five continents. The last quota is either for host or tripartite invitation.

    • this is not funny at all, pal
    • I think I can live with the draw , not a bad group at all. just a week ago our mafia coach said his dream group is Belgium, Egypt and Haiti, he almost got that !   but it's really hard for me (and so many others) to cheer for this team, A mafia boss coach, disgusting group of players. I never had this feeling about any NT in any sport before but still the national team is the national team. you have to like it  coaches and players come and go, the team is what matters.   if the team makes it to the competition, I'm sure there will be lots of Iranians in the stadium despite the orange's ban, that will never be a problem.
    • Belgium is the luckiest in this story
    • One of the worst possible draw for us. Group really easy but having to face  or  in the Round of 32 is devastating.
    • Always dreamed Gretzky will draw Slovakia was another moment I can already remove from my things to do before die list
    • Finland have been awful in almost all winter sports, well beside ice hockey and cross-country from time to time, for a lot of years. It's very good to see them building people to challenge for wins again. Their new coach has done wonders it seems.
    • 14th June in Philadelphia against Cote d´Ivoire   20th June inToronto against Curacao   and 25th June in Philadeplphia to kick out  home    Not easy, but not the most difficult group. Should be okay. Vamos
